Review: Psalm Hymns: Books 1,2,3

August 31, 2017 By Annette1 4 Comments

Do you love to sing scripture?  Singing back to God the words he gave to his people?

L.L. Larkin has come up with a book to do just that and I really really like it.  It is called :  Psalm Hymns, Books 1, 2, & 3: Dramatic, Contemplative, Singable, Recitable Psalms!

No boring unsingable tunes.  But simple easily recognized tunes with the words of the Psalms.

Let me tell you more.

I actually received two versions of this book, which appear to be identical within.  The only different being the cover.   You’ll see the one cover here, and the other cover pictured below.

This book is FILLED with scripture written to the tune of familiar songs and hymns.

Singing scripture to music is one of the best ways to learn scripture.  I remember when I was in bible college needing to memorize a great deal of scripture, I’d say them in my head until I got a tune going. That’s the premise behind this book.  Put scripture to music, particularly familiar music and watch people learn the word of God.

Easy enough eh?

This first book goes up to Psalm 89 and has us singing the Psalms to the tunes of Rock of Ages, Jesus Loves Me. Jesus keep me near the cross and At Calvary.

Various notes are found after some of the psalms.  Some speak to how other musicians used the psalm in music, others to the message found in the passage.

I have to admit, I had some mixed thoughts about these notes.  I loved knowing how other artists used that particular psalm, but wasn’t sure if it was really a part of a music book to also act a bit as a commentary.   Pros and cons right?  I liked what he had to say, but wondered if the book could be a bit shorter with less commentary.

I found the words to the psalms followed the meaning of the Psalms quite nicely.  This book will be going into our “keep it” pile for use later on learning some Psalms.

IF you are music director in a church, or a sunday school leader or choir director you may find this book a boon to you as you strive to teach new music to your people.  Homeschool families with an emphasis on memorizing scripture may also find this book an aid in helping your students appreciate the beauty and teaching found within the Psalms.  Help them write God’s word upon their hearts!

Hymn Study: Come Thou Font, Come Thou My King

August 21, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

We sang this song in church yesterday, and I thought it was an interesting way to modernize an older hymn of worship.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  πŸ™‚  I was captured by the words in verse two about how I was lost in utter darkness and then, oh then Jesus came and rescued me… Aren’t those great words to remember?

“Come Thou Fount, Come Thou King – Gateway Worship” Lyrics

VERSE 1

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount, I’m fixed up- on it
Mount of Thy re- deeming love

VERSE 2

I was lost in utter darkness ’til You came and rescued me
I was bound by all my sin when Your love came and set me free
Now my soul can sing a new song, now my heart has found a home
Now Your grace is always with me
And I’ll never be a- lone

CHORUS

Come, Thou Fount, come, Thou King; Come, Thou precious Prince of Peace
Hear Your bride, to You we sing, come, Thou Fount of our bless- ing
Come, Thou Fount, come, Thou King; Come, Thou precious Prince of Peace
Hear Your bride, to You we sing, come, Thou Fount of our bless- ing

VERSE 3

O, to grace, how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart, Lord, take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts a- bove

CHORUS

School? No School? Our week…

August 12, 2017 By Annette1 4 Comments

Ah.. it’s an hectic week this week.  πŸ™‚  Too much busyness going on.. I need a quieter week eh!  πŸ™‚   I really do.

As I said, it’s been a busy week, let me walk you through it eh? πŸ™‚

Sunday:
The lad and I go to church cause dad found sleeping an optional choice until about three hours before church began.   He was miserable the rest of the day and didn’t eat until almost 9 p.m.   So instead of going to the Pinery we took care of dad.  The lad, much to his delight, on his walk out of the house found a queen ant!

Monday:
Normally our day to go to London BUT Tuesday is my birthday and wanted my sweetheart to take me out for lunch so we’re going to London on Tuesday instead.  We took a wee bit of time to work on our lapbook of inventors from Journey though Learning.  We studied up on Benjamin Franklin.

Afterwards the lad took himself out for a walk again (and found another ant), and then busied himself for the remainder of the day looking for items he needed to build an ant home (to the extent of biking all the way across town to go shopping at Rowe’s).   While he worked away, I secluded myself in the basement clearing out a corner that had become VERY messy and was drying me crazy.  πŸ™‚   While I was cleaning I also did the laundry and ran the dishwasher at night.

Hubby tried to get himself going again today but moving around ended him with a massive headache, so he still fighting off something.

See Look!   I have potatoes!   I never plant seed potatoes.  I just plant leftovers that are getting soft and growing from store potatoes.  This year the lad planted them in the garden and had WAY too much fun doing so…We got at least five times what we planted and it’ll do us well and we even shared with others. πŸ™‚

Tuesday:
It’s a birthday day!!   Mine!   Can you believe that I am 52 already!!!   With a 12 year old boy!!!!   I know.. time flies by so quickly it blows my mind sometimes.  Today.. lunch out!  Woot woot!!!

Wednesday:
Foodbank in the morning.  We had a lot of people on today so I sent the lad home early so he could sort out the taters for a lady needing some.

Afternoon: working on inventors, doing some baking from Everyday Cooking.

Thursday:
Birthday lunch out with my mom!  πŸ™‚  Had a good time with a visit afterwards.  We had chinese buffet.   It was a lovely time together.  πŸ™‚

Friday:
Point Pelee to visit some friends.  Oh my oh my we had a great time!  πŸ™‚   We really did.  We laughed, we biked, we talked, we ate.  Just fun!

Discovered the free hub on my bike was fritzed so hubby is going to work at fixing it sometime but it’s all good.

Saturday:
A day of tiredness.  It was a LONG day on Friday driving for two hours there and then back again (through a lovely wild thunderstorm that was at times alarming).  Found out after the fact there was a tornado close by.   BUT God kept us safe.   Tired boy, tired mom, wide awake dad.  πŸ™‚   I had a headache most of the day with little energy.

Place: some to hold dear.  This was a poem based on our fun camping at Grundy Lake. Word Prompt post for five minute Friday.
Parenting Series: Rest.   Depend on God more, Find more Joy.
Art Book: First Book of Canadian Art.   History of Art in Canada
The Delight vs The Captivity. Devotional on Rom 7:8-25

Hymn: Shout to the Lord

August 7, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

“Shout the Lord” is a praise song we sang in church this morning.   It was kinda fun to sing though I missed the trellos that used to accompany it in the church I learned it in.  πŸ™‚  Written by Chris Tomlin, I like much of the music he has put together.

Chris Tomlin is an American contemporary christian music author. who has put together more than 14 albums of music set to Praise the Lord God. He learned guitar from his dad, and wrote his first song at age 14.

Lyrics

[Chorus]
Shout to the lord, all the earth
Let us sing
Power and majesty, praise to the king;
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of your name
I sing for joy at the work of your hands
Forever i’ll love you, forever i’ll stand
Nothing compares to the promise i have in you

[Verse]
My jesus, my savior
Lord, there is none like you;
All of my days
I want to praise
The wonders of your mighty love
My comfort, my shelter
Tower of refuge and strength;
Let every breath, all that i am
Never cease to worship you

[Chorus]
Shout to the lord, all the earth
Let us sing
Power and majesty, praise to the king;
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of your name
I sing for joy at the work of your hands
Forever I’ll love you, forever I’ll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have in you

Hymn Study: How Deep the Father’s Love for Us

August 2, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

We sang this song a week or so before vacation.
As always my heart was broken and then raised again.
God’s love for us… sometimes I find it so unfathomable.

Lyrics:

How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure,
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss –
The Father turns His face away,
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory.
Behold the man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders;
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life –
I know that it is finished.
I will not boast in anything,
No gifts, no power, no wisdom;
But I will boast in Jesus Christ,
His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer;
But this I know with all my heart –
His wounds have paid my ransom.

Hymn Study: Take my Life and Let it Be

July 17, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

We sang  this lovely song in the church where hubby was preaching this morning.  It was so nice to sing it with an almost full congregation.  Makes the singing so much easier you know?  πŸ™‚

The tune sung below is the one I am most comfortable with.

Lyrics
“Take My Life and Let it Be”
Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise.
Let them flow in endless praise.
Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee.
Swift and beautiful for Thee.
Take my voice and let me sing,
Always, only for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee.
Filled with messages from Thee.
Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose.
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose.
Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne.
It shall be Thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.
Ever, only, all for Thee.

This hymn was written by Frances Havergal. She was the daughter of a minister and was a devoted christian lady all her life.   Her desire was for people to know the Lord, and loved using her ability to write to create literature and poetry to encourage people’s hearts toward the Lord. She struggled with poor health all her life, but that didn’t stop her from living an active life.  She started writing poetry at age 7, and spent time memorizing scripture – the psalms, most of the New Testament and more. She knew many different languages and was in demand as a soloist and pianist.    Her poetry was infused with prayer.   She died age 42.

This version was quite different but I thought you might enjoy it as I did. πŸ™‚

The immediate story of this particular hymn.

I went for a little visit of five days (to Areley House). There were
ten persons in the house, some unconverted and long prayed for, some
converted, but not rejoicing Christians. He gave me the prayer, Lord, give me all in this house! And He just did.
Before I left the house every one had got a blessing. The last night of
my visit after I had retired, the governess asked me to go to the two
daughters. They were crying, &c.; then and there both of them
trusted and rejoiced; it was nearly midnight. I was too happy to sleep,
and passed most of the night in praise and renewal of my own
consecration; and these little couplets formed themselves, and chimed in
my heart one after another till they finished with Ever, Only, ALL for Thee!

Hymn Study: By Faith

July 10, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

We sang this song in church the other day, and it brought back good strong memories for me of a women’s conference I went to where the Getty’s were the musical directors.  I was introduced to this song and just loved it.   Sung by a full congregation it sounds great as praise directed to the living Lord God eh?

Thought I’d share it with you.

This song speaks to of my favourite verse: 1 Peter 2:9-10
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people
for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him
who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

How God calls us his own.

Then we need to walk in that calling don’t we?   Today.. be encouraged to do so.  πŸ™‚

Lyrics
By faith, we see the hand of God
In the light of creation’s grand design;
In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness,
Who walk by faith and not by sight.
By faith, our fathers roamed the earth
With the power of His promise in their hearts
Of a holy city built by God’s own hand –
A place where peace and justice reign.
We will stand as children of the promise,
We will fix our eyes on Him, our soul’s reward.
Till the race is finished and the work is done,
We’ll walk by faith and not by sight.
By faith, the prophets saw a day
When the longed-for Messiah would appear
With the power to break the chains of sin and death,
And rise triumphant from the grave.
By faith, the church was called to go
In the power of the Spirit to the lost
To deliver captives and to preach good news,
In every corner of the earth.
By faith, this mountain shall be moved
And the power of the gospel shall prevail,
For we know in Christ all things are possible
For all who call upon His name.
