Hymn Study: Come Thou Almighty King

I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters, and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: Hallelujah! For our Lord God almighty reigns. Revelation 19:6

Come Thou Almighty King is a hymn I am very familiar with, spelling out for us who God is.  

Originally sung to the tune “God save the King” the national anthem for Britain.   Now obviously that wasn’t going to work in Britain, so a new tune was developed to go along with these words. 

This song has been around since about 1755, with different authors being ascribed to it but none proven.   Currently no one has a real certainty about who the author is.  For more on this, I suggest you visit here. 

Hymnologist Albert Bailey characterizes the hymn in this manner: “The
hymn is a prayer for the presence of Christ to inspire a congregation in
the hour of worship. God is addressed under three forms: as Father, the
timeless “Ancient of Days” whose function is to rule (stanza 1); as
Incarnate Word, the spirit of holiness whose function is to bless and
conquer (stanza 2); as Comforter, the indwelling source of joy and power
(stanza 3); and finally as the mystic combination, the Holy Trinity, in
whose presence we shall spend an eternity of love and adoration (stanza

Hymn Study: Whiter than Snow

I have to admit that I not had a chance to sing this hymn very often. I know the chorus fairly well, but I need to follow the hymnbook for the verses. Needless to say though, it’s a rather nice hymn that reminds us of how we look to the Lord when we are his own.

Whiter than Snow was written by James Nicholson who lived c. 1828-1876.  He was born in Ireland and came over when he was around 25 years old.

 James Nicholson spent much of life as a clerk
in the post office in Philadelphia. He was always active in the work
of the Wharton Street Methodist Episcopal Church. The hymn was first
published in a pamphlet titled “Joyful Songs” in 1872. The hymn’s
popularity greatly increased with its inclusion in the well-known Gospel
Hymns series published by Sankey and Bliss. (source)    

He spent about 20 years in Philadelphia, eventually moving in c.1871 to work in the post office in Washington, DC.

This hymn is based on Ps51:7 – “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”

    Break down every idol, cast out every foe—

A Pictorial Visit June 17-23

Our week in pictures.   We had a busy week, I thought I’d share it a bit with you.  🙂

Saturday, A Yard Sale.  I had a whole lot more pictures, but I deleted them from my phone after the sale because well.. 90% of the stuff was either sold or donated.   It was a tough day with people being extremely frugal this year… made me feel very annoyed.  Bargain, but don’t be rude.  Had some highlights in the joy of a fellow discovering our very old cooler and tent.. just when he needed one.  🙂  The grin of delight in a lad discovering a dinosaur toy.  The pleasure in a fellow finding a whack of beat up candles perfect for his needs.

The horses.   I’ve been watching the foals a lot this week.  I’ve nicknamed them Braveheart and Momma’s boy.   This here is Momma’s boy.  Never find him far from momma, while Braveheart explores everywhere he can and boy…can he run already.

Reviews:  I’ve written a lot of reviews this week.  Trying to push through books I need to get done as I’m going a book sale this week and I want to see if I can move some of them into new homes.   The most needful review was UnLock Math as it had a deadline.  🙂  Good program by the way, go read my review if you’re looking for a math program from grades seven and up.

Laundry!  Despite a lot of rain this week I managed to get some laundry done.  Hung much of it outside despite my lad complaining it makes the towels all scratchy. 🙂

 Gardening!  We’ve been busy working on the front garden (I call it the kidney garden cause of the shape I made it in).  I do it up every other year really well, digging out the weeds, moving plants and what not.   Since we’re moving this year I really pushed myself to get it done.  Did it over two days though rather than trying to get it all done in one day.  My feet HATE me when I push too hard.   See the difference?   This was day one.

While I was working on the day one of the garden my industrious lad was given the task of rebuilding our outdoor fire pit.   I just said…make it bigger and better, the design is up to you.

That took up our Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thursday was our anniversary which took up out to London where I sold these two younglings to a pet store who were delighted to have them.

 Hubby and I went out to lunch to celebrate our anniversary.  We planned to do some shopping but my body decided it would rather NOT do that.   So we headed home after picking the lad up from gramma’s house. Dinner out was very nice.  15 years it’s been for us.  They’ve been great years for the most part and I have a keeper in a hubby that’s for sure. 🙂   So happy with him.

Friday…oh what are my plans…I’m getting ready for a book sale (on Saturday) so have been emptying my shelves rather drastically.   My criteria is pretty simple.  Do I want to move this book?   If not…out it goes.  I’ve discovered books I didn’t even know I had!   Most of what I don’t sell will be going to a thrift shop (there’s a bible for missions store that I am sure will be happy to get them).  If not there are several in the area I can choose from.  I’ll be giving some away as well as I just want them GONE.

Well I think that’s it… I’ll try to update you again next week too…but we’ll see how the week goes eh?

Oh for schooling the lad is officially on summer schedule.
That means.
Three days math (all summer). He has a choice between Kumon, Smartick and UnLock.
Three days History (until program is done). 
Language arts (two days a week).
Friday (make a kit, do a STEM project, art etc)
Reviews only as necessary.  (usually fitting these into one or two days a week).

 Run with Me.  Autobiography of Shana Richards-Ross.
 Art book: Dangles.  Gemstones as the basis of flair in drawing.
 The Dolphins of Shark Bay.  Really really liked this book.
 UnLock Math.  Great math program, grades 7 and up.
 Kids NIV Study Bible.   This was well done.
 Grand Canyon.  Learn about the Grand Canyon.

Everything Else
 Parenting Series: Lost.   The next in the series. 
 Recipe: Beef Stroganoff.  I liked this dish. 
 W is for Winnie the Pooh.  Alphabet blogging in Canada post.
 Hymn Study: Jesus I Come.  A great old hymn.
 Garden, what about the bushy one?   A poem that I had fun writing. 🙂

Hymn Study: Jesus, I Come

 This past Sunday we sang this hymn and I wanted to share it with you.

Jesus I come was written by William
T. Sleeper in 1887. Mr. Sleeper was a home missionary serving with the Congregational Church in Massachusetts for over 30 years.   The tune I am familiar with was written by George Stebbins.  Mr. Sleeper also wrote the hymn Ye Must be Born Again.   Beyond that, little is known about this evangelist and part-time hymn writer.

Lyrics:
1. Out of my bondage, sorrow and night,

Jesus, I come; Jesus I come.

Into Thy freedom, gladness and light,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of my sickness into Thy health,

Out of my wanting and into Thy wealth,

Out of my sin and into Thyself,

I’ll leave you with a tune by Thompson.  It’s a rather different tune to me, but it might be one you are more familiar with.

Hymn Study: Oh the Deep Deep Love of Jesus

Have you ever sat back and listened to a bunch of men around you sing a hymn together?  Just listened to those deep voices of men praising God together?

I had the privilege on Thursday of doing just that.

I joined hubby for the closing session of Banner of Truth conference this year, along with my 11 year old son.    The men sang “Oh the Deep Deep Love of Jesus”.

It was just LOVELY, seriously LOVELY to sit back and listen.

I found it very difficult to find a video of men singing this lovely old hymn.  Wasn’t crazy about it but it’s not a horrid rendition, just seemed very fast.  🙂

Anyways, this hymn was written by: S.Trevor Francis.  A man who loved open air preaching and writing hymns.  He was a young man going through..what some might call a time of troubles.. troubling enough that he was tempted to end it all.  But then asked himself… do you love Jesus.   His answer?  “I do believe with my whole heart.”  His faith reaffirmed, he continued working his way onward.

This hymn speaks to his love for the Lord God.  Pretty cool eh?

Hymn Study: Seed to Sow

Looking up that Michael W. Smith song the other day reminded me of this song that I thoroughly enjoy listening to. I used to beat out the song when swimming. Hot summer days with music dancing in my head and playing out in the water. Ah.. it was fun and good! But seriously if you think about the words of the song, you will see the church in action. How everyone is different in the church, with different skill sets that make the church what it is. Helping the church to grow, and God’s truth to be seen. So many different people to reach with the gospel, and so many different people God can use to help them see the way.

Highlights of the Week May 14-20

 In no particular order, some of the highlights of the week

Hubby preached a sermon in this church again.

New roof put up on one of the rabbitry buildings.   I had gone into the rabbitry on Wednesday or Thursday this week to do something and spotted one of my girls panting, so promptly removed the winter covering tarp.  This necessitated a building of a wooden roof.   We’ve done tarps one them for the past few years, and found last year the tarps were ripping.  This one was the worst so we did it first, I hope to do the other in two weeks.   I put the lattice sides on it last year and it greatly improved airflow which was a good thing.    Good to have the rabbits cooler again. We worked as a family to put it all together… cutting, drilling, moving etc.  busy hard work.  Hubby put up a “thing” to help with taking the bed off the truck as well…that was hard work man…digging post holes…he has way too many blisters.

My buttercups are blooming!!!!

We’ve been working our way through the human body and we often add videos.  Currently we are on the teeth.  So we watched what the lad said “this was a good video mom, I learned a lot and do a bunch of things wrong”.  We totally ignored all the product placement stuff.

Working on our Physics STEM kit.  We learned about plumb lines and the center of gravity.   It was rather neat to teach about how a person’s center of gravity changes how they move and how that affects doing things like Karate, adding stability and such like.   Seeing the practical use of science in everyday life was a “wow” moment for the lad and provoked great discussion.

Working our way through the Hawaiian Frog from ArtAchieve.  Next week we are going to add colour to him.  Hopefully he’ll turn out well, I’m a bit concerned that I made him too small.  The lad wasn’t ready for me to take a picture of his rendition.
