Do not mock my people

December 14, 2016 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

 Do you ever find it interesting how the Lord can be full of wrath for how Israel is acting and yet doesn’t allow others to poke fun at his chosen people?

Today the Lord is angry with Ammon because they rejoiced over the Lord’s punishment of her.

He’s very clear isn’t he?

“Thus says the Lord GOD, Because you
said, ‘Aha!’ over my sanctuary when it was profaned, and over the land
of Israel when it was made desolate, and over the house of Judah when
they went into exile…..Because you have clapped your hands
and stamped your feet and rejoiced with all the malice within your soul
against the land of Israel.”   BECAUSE you laughed at my people…..you shall be punished.

God is not only a jealous God in how he is worshipped (he’s the only one who should be worshipped).  He’s also jealous for his people.

He is indeed so angry with the Ammonites that he will cut you off from the peoples and will make you perish out of the countries; I will destroy you.   And why will he do this?

For the exact same reason he disciplines The house of Israel.

So they will know that HE IS LORD GOD.

That’s what God wants the peoples of the earth to know.  Whether they are his chosen own or just generic folks… he wants them to know that he is the LORD GOD.   Even here in Ezekiel you find God’s global concern for the world.   He wants everyone to know him as Lord God.

I don’t know about you but I find this all very comforting.
It’s like God is being a big ole mamma hen here.  Minding his children well but  not allowing others to turn upon them.

Still showing that love and concern for others (wanting them all to know just who he is, and if people understand who God is they will trust him with their very life.  But at the same time letting them know that only HE is allowed to discipline his people, and only the instruments he deems to use.  And NO-ONE is allowed to laugh at his people in distress.

Just comforting.  🙂

    [25:1] The word of the LORD came to me: [2] “Son of man, set your face toward the Ammonites and prophesy against them. [3] Say to the Ammonites, Hear the word of the Lord GOD: Thus says the Lord GOD, Because you said, ‘Aha!’ over my sanctuary when it was profaned, and over the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and over the house of Judah when they went into exile, [4] therefore behold, I am handing you over to the people of the East for a possession, and they shall set their encampments among you and make their dwellings in your midst. They shall eat your fruit, and they shall drink your milk. [5] I will make Rabbah a pasture for camels and Ammon a fold for flocks. Then you will know that I am the LORD. [6] For thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet and rejoiced with all the malice within your soul against the land of Israel, [7] therefore, behold, I have stretched out my hand against you, and will hand you over as plunder to the nations. And I will cut you off from the peoples and will make you perish out of the countries; I will destroy you. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

Do not Forget the Lord God

December 5, 2016 By Annette1 2 Comments

Picking up my studies in Ezekiel here.    You can find the rest of my study HERE.

Today Ezekiel 23

First the written word of God, then I will give my thoughts as I do my devotions.   Perhaps you might like to join me in this study?

 [23:1] The word of the LORD came to me: [2] “Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother. [3] They played the whore in Egypt; they played the whore in their youth; there their breasts were pressed and their virgin bosoms handled. [4] Oholah was the name of the elder and Oholibah the name of her sister. They became mine, and they bore sons and daughters. As for their names, Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.
    [5] “Oholah played the whore while she was mine, and she lusted after her lovers the Assyrians, warriors [6] clothed in purple, governors and commanders, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding on horses. [7] She bestowed her whoring upon them, the choicest men of Assyria all of them, and she defiled herself with all the idols of everyone after whom she lusted. [8] She did not give up her whoring that she had begun in Egypt; for in her youth men had lain with her and handled her virgin bosom and poured out their whoring lust upon her. [9] Therefore I delivered her into the hands of her lovers, into the hands of the Assyrians, after whom she lusted. [10] These uncovered her nakedness; they seized her sons and her daughters; and as for her, they killed her with the sword; and she became a byword among women, when judgment had been executed on her.
    [11] “Her sister Oholibah saw this, and she became more corrupt than her sister in her lust and in her whoring, which was worse than that of her sister. [12] She lusted after the Assyrians, governors and commanders, warriors clothed in full armor, horsemen riding on horses, all of them desirable young men. [13] And I saw that she was defiled; they both took the same way. [14] But she carried her whoring further. She saw men portrayed on the wall, the images of the Chaldeans portrayed in vermilion, [15] wearing belts on their waists, with flowing turbans on their heads, all of them having the appearance of officers, a likeness of Babylonians whose native land was Chaldea. [16] When she saw them, she lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea. [17] And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their whoring lust. And after she was defiled by them, she turned from them in disgust. [18] When she carried on her whoring so openly and flaunted her nakedness, I turned in disgust from her, as I had turned in disgust from her sister. [19] Yet she increased her whoring, remembering the days of her youth, when she played the whore in the land of Egypt [20] and lusted after her lovers there, whose members were like those of donkeys, and whose issue was like that of horses. [21] Thus you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when the Egyptians handled your bosom and pressed your young breasts.”
    [22] Therefore, O Oholibah, thus says the Lord GOD: “Behold, I will stir up against you your lovers from whom you turned in disgust, and I will bring them against you from every side: [23] the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, Pekod and Shoa and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them, desirable young men, governors and commanders all of them, officers and men of renown, all of them riding on horses. [24] And they shall come against you from the north with chariots and wagons and a host of peoples. They shall set themselves against you on every side with buckler, shield, and helmet; and I will commit the judgment to them, and they shall judge you according to their judgments. [25] And I will direct my jealousy against you, that they may deal with you in fury. They shall cut off your nose and your ears, and your survivors shall fall by the sword. They shall seize your sons and your daughters, and your survivors shall be devoured by fire. [26] They shall also strip you of your clothes and take away your beautiful jewels. [27] Thus I will put an end to your lewdness and your whoring begun in the land of Egypt, so that you shall not lift up your eyes to them or remember Egypt anymore.
    [28] “For thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will deliver you into the hands of those whom you hate, into the hands of those from whom you turned in disgust, [29] and they shall deal with you in hatred and take away all the fruit of your labor and leave you naked and bare, and the nakedness of your whoring shall be uncovered. Your lewdness and your whoring [30] have brought this upon you, because you played the whore with the nations and defiled yourself with their idols. [31] You have gone the way of your sister; therefore I will give her cup into your hand. [32] Thus says the Lord GOD:
    “You shall drink your sister’s cup
        that is deep and large;
    you shall be laughed at and held in derision,
        for it contains much;
    [33] you will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow.
    A cup of horror and desolation,
        the cup of your sister Samaria;
    [34] you shall drink it and drain it out,
        and gnaw its shards,
        and tear your breasts;
    for I have spoken, declares the Lord GOD. [35] Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, you yourself must bear the consequences of your lewdness and whoring.”
    [36] The LORD said to me: “Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Declare to them their abominations. [37] For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. With their idols they have committed adultery, and they have even offered up to them for food the children whom they had borne to me. [38] Moreover, this they have done to me: they have defiled my sanctuary on the same day and profaned my Sabbaths. [39] For when they had slaughtered their children in sacrifice to their idols, on the same day they came into my sanctuary to profane it. And behold, this is what they did in my house. [40] They even sent for men to come from afar, to whom a messenger was sent; and behold, they came. For them you bathed yourself, painted your eyes, and adorned yourself with ornaments. [41] You sat on a stately couch, with a table spread before it on which you had placed my incense and my oil. [42] The sound of a carefree multitude was with her; and with men of the common sort, drunkards were brought from the wilderness; and they put bracelets on the hands of the women, and beautiful crowns on their heads.
    [43] “Then I said of her who was worn out by adultery, ‘Now they will continue to use her for a whore, even her!’ [44] For they have gone in to her, as men go in to a prostitute. Thus they went in to Oholah and to Oholibah, lewd women! [45] But righteous men shall pass judgment on them with the sentence of adulteresses, and with the sentence of women who shed blood, because they are adulteresses, and blood is on their hands.”
    [46] For thus says the Lord GOD: “Bring up a vast host against them, and make them an object of terror and a plunder. [47] And the host shall stone them and cut them down with their swords. They shall kill their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses. [48] Thus will I put an end to lewdness in the land, that all women may take warning and not commit lewdness as you have done. [49] And they shall return your lewdness upon you, and you shall bear the penalty for your sinful idolatry, and you shall know that I am the Lord GOD.”
(Ezekiel 23 ESV)

Devotions

 Today the Lord tells Ezekiel of two sisters, Oholah was the name of the elder and Oholibah the name of her sister. These sisters were promiscuous in their youth.   Now these two girls became God’s own.   God made it clear to Ezekiel who these sisters where, Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.

Two nations, both God’s own.

Samaria, played the prostitute, wanting to be with Assyria… loving their warriors.  Oh, how she wanted them.  She took up their idols and went after them with gusto.   So God said …  Here you go, be with them.  The Assyrians did not treat her nicely… showing her nakedness, taking her children, and then killing her.. letting her become a byword.

I had to look up what it means to become a byword and learned that it mean that “a person or thing cited as a notorious and outstanding example or embodiment of something.”   So Samaria became a byword for prostitution (I would think since that’s what God is calling her out for).

Has me thinking, what type of byword would I be wanted to be known for?

Oholibah (Jerusalem) saw what happened with Samaria… and became even worse!!!   She went the same way as Samaria but carried her actions further.   Not only lusting after Assyrians warriors, but also going after the Babylonians.   She displayed her lust openly, even after she turned from the Babylonians in disgust.   And so the Lord God turned away from her in disgust (v18).   This turning away of the Lord did not stop Jerusalem’s behaviour though…in fact it got worse!

That bothers me you know… that it got worse.  I suppose in some ways it makes sense,  if someone turns away from you for something you are doing, that in defiance and hurt you would do it all the more, but I don’t get the sense here.   Here it just seems like “ah, freedom, no obligation, let’s really really just do what we want.”   It just makes me feel so sad.

The Lord God’s response was this “he would stir up all those nations she wanted, those she lusted after the Babylonians, the Chaldeans, Pekod, Shoa, Koa, Assyrians and all the rest.  They shall come upon her with all their warriors and execute judgement upon her.   God’s jealousy and fury will be spent upon her.   God’s aim: to put an end to her lewdness and prostitution.

He will do this because of how she had behaved.

  Thus says the Lord GOD:
    “You shall drink your sister’s cup
        that is deep and large;
    you shall be laughed at and held in derision,
        for it contains much;
    you will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow.
    A cup of horror and desolation,
        the cup of your sister Samaria;
    you shall drink it and drain it out,
        and gnaw its shards,
        and tear your breasts;

Jerusalem, in it’s wanting of other lands and nations has forgotten who the Lord God is, and has to bear the consequences of her actions.

Having spoken all this, God lays a charge on Ezekiel.   “Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Declare to them their abominations.”

They have

  • committed adultery
  • killed their children on behalf of their idols
  • defiled his sanctuary
  • profaned the Sabbath

This verse: ” But righteous men shall pass judgment on them with the sentence of
adulteresses, and with the sentence of women who shed blood, because
they are adulteresses, and blood is on their hands.”  Speaks the truth eh?   The righteous see what happens, and the consequences fall where they must don’t they?

And so God will bring it all to an end.  Letting them bear the penalty for their actions.

I read these words and realize how deadly serious God is.
He is not to be mocked or profaned.
He waits for his people to remember him, but when they go too far, he acts.
The righteous judge the wrongdoers.

It makes me so aware of my own weakness, my own failures, my lusts of the spirit and flesh.  It minds me to be more mindful of my thoughts and desires.

I would not want to bear the consequences I’ve realized.   Can you imagine the very thing you are longing for being turned against you?   That’s what happened with Jerusalem and Samaria.   They forgot the Lord as they chased after their desires.

Let me NOT forget the Lord.
That is my prayer today… that I not forget him in my pursuit of anything here.   He is more important.  ALWAYS.

Today’s Homeschooling

February 21, 2012 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

 The lad and I have been working through various safety issues.

We’ve done fire safety, chemical safety, kitchen safety, and something else.  Today we’re doing animal safety.  We talked about safety around dogs, cats, wild animals.   The lad asked about “poisonous spiders and Poisonous snakes”.   So we talked about the rattlesnake which is the only poisonous snake in Ontario and how to be safe around them.  We did a variety of puzzles, learned the words yes/no, and counted.

I’m also starting to go through our bible materials box and today we have “the golden rule”.
I printed out this copywork sheet.    And went through a variety of pictures and we talked about what you should do in a given situation.  Sharing, caring, helping, and such like.   We’ll pick a package at least once a week and work on it.  🙂

We did a language lesson from First language lessons.   We learned about fables, and took the opportunity to do some art at the same time. 🙂   Drawing pictures of lions and mice and answering questions about how the story went.   It was interesting how this story tied in with learning about the golden rule.

we took the time to look up in 123 Draw how to draw a lion.  It was decided that mommy would learn to draw a lion and the lad would draw out the story (see above) complete with a few embellishments. 🙂  The hunters of course had to figure out HOW to net the lion and it was fairly complicated but they managed it.

Time for fun with smarties. 🙂  these are a favourite chocolate confection.

This was followed by playing chess with smarties.

We did a number of things with smarties first though.  We learned about consumer packaging.  How they can’t put less in the box than they say.. we learned that our smartie box calls for 50 g but we had 55 g.  So we practiced doing less than and greater than signs, we counted out how many of each colour there was and did less than/greater than signs.  Then played checkers.  it was a good thing that we have enough of two colours to play it well.  The lad beat me.

count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. that was the theme of the day in our numbers and counting book.

I did something different for our animal of the day.  I pulled out my temperate zone books and gave the lad a choice.  He chose deserts.  And of the animal pages in the book he was intrigued by the fringe-toed sand lizard.  We looked it up and found them to be quite an interesting little animal.  They can swim in sand like a fish does in water!  Complete with nostrils that seal and jaws that can clamp shut to keep the sand out.   Quite fascinating the creatures that God creates.

Well.. I was going to show you a foot, but apparently it’s a copyright violation to show it to you.  So I’d suggest you go check out this site and check it out for yourself.  🙂  They have these are special scales that help the lizard move in the sand.

We had a hoot playing checkers using goldfish crackers.
We play modified checkers in that we have no forced jump and we only jump once, even if we can jump two or three times.  This makes it easier for the lad to grasp for some reason.  Over time we’ll start playing by the rules, but for now this is easier, and yet harder.  🙂  I was the smiling goldfish, he was the no smile ones.

When we finished with our bookwork the lad asked if I could hook him up with some thinking computer games, and I said most certainly. Not sure yet where I’ll put him but I’ll find something for him to play online. Cheers! 🙂

We had fun getting trounced at Playing History.   We played  a battle in England between the Vikings and the English and well.. as is true to life, we got trounced. 🙂   and then he did some logic games over at CoolMath4Kids.

Bible study, stay at home study and play dates

October 20, 2011 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

This morning I had bible study at the local Christian Reformed Church. We are going to study Colossians using the Infuse bible study. it’s available from Faith Alive resources.

Before I left I set the lad up with his bookwork with his dad.

he did Four pages in each of these books.
My heavenly Helper

The Complete book of Numbers and Counting

Complete Canadian Curriculum 1

and two pages in My Book of Numbers 1-120. It was supposed to be four pages but dad says “this book is highly repetitive and boring”. 🙂

they also went through the alphabet and did some word and number matching with some flashcards.

When I came home the lad was quite happily playing with Reflex Math. Hubby said the highest he got was 8,000 feet in the game that he particularly enjoys doing which is a good achievement for a lad just gaining confidence with his addition and subtraction abilities. Thus far I am impressed with this on-line game. Time will tell if I choose to purchase it. Checking out the pricing, for me it would be $35/year. Affordable I think. But I have one more week to play with it yet. 🙂

So we had a quick lunch and then scampered off to London for a playdate with his friend Adella from HOPE. We went to Adventures in Wonderland. They had a hoot. I got discounted tickets through WagJag.
