This poem is in response to a five minute post from Miss Kate, the word today is peace. My words aren’t one of hope tonight, but filled with the questions of one boy living in Canada, a country of peace.

A Country of Peace
Tonight the lad
quietly came
did you hear the news
of Russia and the Ukraine?
When countries start
fighting
don’t more join in?
What of China
doing flyovers
over their
neighbour Taiwen?
All these places
Mom, nuclear missiles
they have.
What if a mistake happens?
And then suddenly
the world
will have problems
forever.
The fallout
it will travel
everywhere.
It’s not a good
time for me
to be just shy
of 18 (in a couple of years).
I told him,
Yes, it’s a worry
We’ve seen it before
(done a study of WW1 & 2)
But Canada
won’t go to war
As least historically
we won’t unless
Britain does.
But our current PM
is a bit of a nut
so it’s hard to know
what to expect.
I don’t know
if I helped
but the crease of concern
faded a bit.
How does this fit
with the word of Peace?
Honestly, I don’t
really know.
Canada is historically
a country of peace
We are known well
for peacekeeping abilities.
And yet, protests,
and unthinking, perhaps
uncaring PM tends to
flame opinions.
And so I wonder
if, push came to shove,
what this PM
might incite others to do.
Caring not, as he does,
for the people
who work and breathe
and support this land.
A PM who,
wouldn’t care,
about the concerns
of an almost
17 year old boy.

What I do know
What I do know is that the God I serve is the God of peace. He brings peace into lives in ways that totally stun me. He’s the God who wins battles for his people. God uses battle to chasten his people, this fact is rife throughout the Old Testament.
I also know that God holds the future. Not only of my country of Peace but also of countries more contentious than my own. Nothing will happen tomorrow that will surprise him.
Recently I’ve witnessed this God of mine providing a miracle in sparing the life of the husband of a dear friend recently passed. All signs pointed to him not surviving, and here he is, eating a favourite dish already. It’s a most unexpected blessing.
This is the God that I will lean on. He is my hope, my peace, my very breath, and that is my prayer for you. That YOU will know this God of peace, the holder of all our futures.

Really interesting to hear a Canadian specific view, Annette. I learned things about Canada I didn’t know.
Let’s hope and pray, as mothers of sons, that God’s mercy and justice come to eastern Europe soon.
I’ve not written my post yet but you’ve given me lots to think about.
yes, yes indeed.
Thank you for this honest share.

you are most welcome
Annette, I can only imagine the concern of young boys at this time. My son is grown now, but I remember well worrying. I pray the Lord brings your son peace of mind, an assurance of His Presence during these changing and chaotic days. May we be praying for our leaders as they need much wisdom and discernment in making decisions which will impact so many.
yes, we do need to pray for our leaders… it’s hard you know?
The finger on the trigger,
iron sights on someone’s head
for idea that seems bigger,
five pound pull and target’s dead,
and somewhere in the darkness
you won’t hear the parents weep
for their boy dead in harness,
for who listens to what sheep
mourn for when we fancy lamb
(which is good with mint, they say),
and do you think the Great I Am
will flutter in to save the day?
It’s hard to hear past all the drumming,
but know this: He’s real, He’s coming.
he is! There is always hope!
A heartfelt words yearning for peace, beautifully written.
thank you
I’m glad Canada is a country of peace, Anit. Our neighbor moved to Canada last winter to be near his daughter. And leaders make such a difference in how things are handled in our countries. May God help us elect righteous leaders! I agree with your prayer, “That YOU will know this God of peace, the holder of all our futures.”
yes, more prayer indeed eh? thank you.
A country of Peace – I love that!

oh good! 🙂
So well said. We don’t know how anything will turn out, but God does, and that is where our peace is found. I read an article earlier today that shared a little reminder to not lie awake worrying: Go to sleep. God is awake and he loves you very much.
I think that sums it up. Shalom.
it does. Thank you for sharing that with me.
You echoed what many of us are feeling.
maybe eh?
“He is my hope, my peace, my very breath, and that is my prayer for you. That YOU will know this God of peace, the holder of all our futures. ” Beautiful post. I love your poetry. I write poetry too. Thanks for the reminder and the prayer that He is above it all.
oh thank you. I’m glad you know this holder of our future
Annette, thank you for this wonderful message.

You are most welcome Paula. 🙂
I love that Canada is historically a place of peace. We need more countries to follow suit! Thanks for sharing.
yes we do
Passing along hugs to the lad and to you. May the Peace of God envelope you all as we all watch and wait to see how each of the leaders will act and react.
oh, thank you my friend.
