So this past week we went away, camping for a week. I had a couple of sitters. One for morning and evening chores and one for kitten and baby bunny duty. I was a bit worried about leaving since our little Miss Ivy is scared of strangers. I knew that of all our cats she would be the one to say “an absence was noted”. Stranger danger is a real thing for her, and she’s still young and lacking in mass so I wanted her minded well while we were gone.
It’s was so funny to watch (or rather hear) through our kitten-sitter the progress that Miss Ivy made. And as I sit here watching a movie, I though of how my boy matures when he’s away from his folks. When others depend on him, or when he has to depend upon himself, he matures in ways, sometimes unexpected.
An Absence Was Noted
Last week an absence
was noted.
A shy kitten running
on high alert.
Stranger danger!!!!!!
Must hide!!!
A kitten sitter called
“I can’t feed your kitten
She’s nowhere to be found!”
Problem-solving commenced.
Place some kibble under
beds and the sofa.
She’s the only one who
fits under such things.
Careful placement of some
kibble, and a kitten was
fed. Happiness!
A phone call made
“You’ll never guess!
Ivy let me see her!!
She let me pet her!!!”
My absence, while still noted
seemed to bother the
youngest member of our
household less.
To my shock
she even allowed
ear rubs, and did
head thumps!
Could this be our
little Ivy???
Could she really be
that brave?
It’s good to be shocked
and to realize that
braveness can happen
when those you know are away.

I’m so glad you had the opportunity to slip away with your family, Annette. Sometimes we need a break from all our chores and responsibilities. And I’m so glad you found people to take care of your animals. And it sounds like your little kitty grew up a little while you were gone.
It was so good to get away. And Miss Ivy… she lets me pet her now too! 🙂 Not just my hubby’s cat anymore!!!
Yesterday my dear wife’s cat
noted that she was not home,
and therefore decided that
among the dogs she’d duly roam,
and she began by frightening
the Ridgebacks into awed submission
as from her eyes flashed lightning,
and then she turned her regal vision
unto a large black Labrador,
backing him up to a wall
where he cowered on the floor
(thus pride goeth ‘fore the fall),
but then our Goldie fled the field
for the Chihuahuas would not yield.
I can totally get those chihuahuas not backing down… they are a force to be reckoned with aren’t they?
What a lovely lesson inspired by a sweet kitten! Reminds me a little of my Merida who has always been cautious of strangers and upset by any changes to her routine. Yet she’s so sweet and gentle and affectionate to her people and when she’s in the mood. Visiting from FMF#19

Love the story of Ivy the kitten. My cat was always brave with new folks as long as they were sitting down. Once she got to know them for a few, she was okay with them all the time.
