The Plan: Kill Jesus

August 21, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

I’m feeling off-set that I haven’t spent time with the Book of John lately, so on this dreadly rainy day when I should be planning out my world war study with the lad, I find myself instead drawn to spending time in John.  Last time we met Lazarus was raised from the dead.  In John 11:45-57 we see a plot to kill Jesus.

45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.

54 Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.

55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.56 They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

John 11:45-57

Do you recall the people that had followed Mary out when she went to see Jesus?  All those Jews who had come to comfort her and Martha in their time of loss.

Well, you know they saw what Jesus did eh?   They saw Lazarus called forth out of the tomb, they saw him weep, they saw him pray (not in the order mind you).   But they saw ALL that Jesus had done.   Some of those people, seeing this, believed in Jesus.  Isn’t that awesome?

But some of them didn’t.  Instead they went running to the Pharisees and “told them what Jesus had done.”  Therefore the chief priests and Pharisees called a council and asked this: “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” Do you see their fear?  The leadership walked a fine line eh?  Knowing the Romans left them free to practice their religion yet not being masters of the land they lived on.  How do they maintain their peace and status?   How do they prevent Jesus from running amuck, running against what they believed, raising folk from the dead and basically causing a stir?   They were so uncertain until…..

Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.”   Verse 51 puts a different spin on it, without it you’d think he was just a nasty man.  BUT it was a prophesy that spoke saying the Jesus would die for the nation, but not just the nation but all of God’s children around the world.  Reading that it was a prophesy, I wonder what Caiaphas thought after he said those words.  Did they ring true for him, or was he horrified at what he just said?   I know we aren’t told, but we don’t see him saying no no, that’s not what I meant instead we see the following…

The Jewish leadership was no longer uncertain about what to do.  Their plans were simple, centered around this solution: how do we put Jesus to death?

The end result is that Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, instead went to Ephraim where he stayed with the disciples.

Passover was coming, Jewish folks came from all over to Jerusalem to prepare themselves, as they did so, they looked around for Jesus.  Word would have spread about him, and the curiousity of people would bring out the wondering.  “Where is Jesus, will he show up, what do you suppose he’ll do, will he do Passover at all you suppose?”   Those questions would have been stirred up by the news the Pharisees and chief priests wanted him arrested.   All the more reason for people to be curious.

What’s my take home?

God’s word is met in ways unexpected.  Like Caiaphas’ prophesy of Jesus’ death.  The fears of the Jewish leadership that made taking Caiaphas’ prophecy and turning into something they could use for their own benefit (and supposedly for the benefit of Israel).

AND YET, people believed in Jesus.  Despite the turmoil and upset, people believed in Jesus.   And that is so very very awesome, isn’t it?

O, How I love Jesus

August 19, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Leafing through the Hymnal from a church hubby preaches at frequently and I ran across this song I used to sing ALOT at a Baptist church I attended for a while.  It was a huge church and I still remember all those voices belting out the words to this song in happy melody.

The words to this hymn were written by Frederick Whitfield. This Englishman wrote about 30 hymns throughout his life.  He was the vicar at a variety of churches throughout England.

Lyrics

There is a name I love to hear,
I love to speak its worth;
It sounds like music in mine ear,
The sweetest name on earth.

Refrain
O how I love Jesus,
O how I love Jesus,
O how I love Jesus,
Because He first loved me!

It tells me of a Savior’s love,
Who died to set me free;
It tells me of His precious blood,
The sinner’s perfect plea.
Refrain

It tells me of a Father’s smile
Beaming upon His child;
It cheers me through this little while,
Through desert, waste, and wild.
Refrain

It tells me what my Father hath
In store for every day,
And though I tread a darksome path,
Yields sunshine all the way.
Refrain

It tells of One whose loving heart
Can feel my deepest woe;
Who in my sorrow bears a part,
That none can bear below.
Refrain

It bids my trembling heart rejoice;
It dries each rising tear;
It tells me, in a still small voice,
To trust and never fear.
Refrain

Jesus, the name I love so well,
The name I love to hear!
No saint on earth its worth can tell,
No heart conceive how dear.
Refrain

This name shall shed its fragrance still
Along this thorny road,
Shall sweetly smooth the rugged hill
That leads me up to God.
Refrain

And there, with all the blood-bought throng,
From sin and sorrow free,
I’ll sing the new eternal song
Of Jesus’ love to me.
Refrain

Loved

August 16, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

HEY!  It’s Friday again and that makes it Five Minute Friday time again!  WOOT WOOT!   Today’s topic is LOVED.

path through mountains, text Loved

Loved

Love love love love
Love love love love
Flowers, music, dancing
romance

Sore shoulders, tired back
Making a living,
Supporting a family

Let me help.
Here’s where it is.
I found it!
Mom called today, I said Hi for you.
Apologies, thankfulness,
Finishing sentences

STOP, hold on…the word today is not love…it’s LOVED.  And loved is different than love.

John 3:16 states this:  For in this way God loved the world, so that he gave his one and only Son, in order that everyone who believes in him will not perish, but will have eternal life.

In this way
An act was planned
Sorrow and
Forgiveness

Weight
Battered
Beaten
Carrying
Hardship Managed

Horror
Shame
Anger
Hatred
Bearing it

Waiting
Talking
Bringing News
Death
Released

Scattered clothing
Not there
Fear abides
Women hide
Conversation

See, it’s written
Words from past
Clarity for today
Walking, Talking
Loved

For in this way God loved the world, so that he gave his one and only Son, in order that everyone who believes in him will not perish, but will have eternal life. Share on X

My Thoughts

Along the way she gives practical advice for talking with your children about loss, how to show them God even in the midst of grief.  There is so much I treasure in this book.   Written in a personal manner you can feel Adriel Booker’s love for women and her strong desire to help them see God even in the midst of a personal calamity.   The occasional journal prompts that appeared were well-timed and appropriate, their goal?  Help you talk to God about your pain, fears and questions.   It’s a good thing to do that.. even in journal form.

Quotes that grabbed at my heart

“Do you think God can still be good, even if we don’t know?   Do you think we can still trust him?”  (her son’s response as yes)

“He is not offended by our lack of certainty over the Big Questions; he’ll never equate our doubts or confusion with a lack of faith if, while questioning, we stay committed to relationship with him.  This is why covenant matters.  Your belonging to him, and his belonging to you…. it matters.”

“God will not shy away from your messy faith or your messy theology or your messy life.”

“The language we use for death fails us; these babies aren’t dead, they aren’t lost.  They are alive and found in him for eternity.  We grieve their loss to us here and now, but we grieve with hope because we know there is more to the story.”

grace like scarlett

Poignant words fill the pages of this book, I can’t possibly list all the words that made me stop and think and consider God just a bit more.

Miscarriage is HARD…those hopes and dreams crushed you know?  But God, God is there through every single bit of it.  He is.  He works it out, he helps us grow our faith, he answers our questions, and he accepts us where we are in our moments in time. Mrs. Booker does an excellent job of walking us through not only her own pain, but also in using our pain to help others.  Our very vulnerability is part of the healing process not only for ourselves but also for those we bump into on our journeys.  Use it.

But seriously… please… Go get this book, read it, share it, seek out God all the more and move forward.  DO IT.

The Sorrow of Faith

August 16, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

hands raised, text the sorrow of faithDo you understand God’s sorrow at our sin?

That’s the question Mr. Hamilton asks in today’s chapter.   Do we know the truth of this statement: The ultimate tragedy of sin is not that it spoils my life, disrupts my relationships, scars my world, but that it dishonours, defies, and disgraces my God.    Do we understand David, when confessing his sin to God says, “Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.”

Too often we are only taught about what sin does in relation to us.  How it hurts us, hurts our relationship with God, and so forth.  Centering it all around ourselves.

quote by ian hamilton

But that’s not the sorrow of faith is it?

The sorrow of faith is what sin does to God.  How it grieves his heart, makes him angry, and causes him to turn his face away from us.   God HATES sin.  HE does.  Do we truly understand this?  Do w

An old term in talking about sin is Deicidium… which means God Murder.   Do we see sin as being that kind of horror against our living God?    Do we truly see God?

The ultimate tragedy of sin is not that it spoils my life, disrupts my relationships, scars my world, but that it dishonours, defies, and disgraces my God. Ian Hamilton Share on X

That’s what it comes down to you know?   The more we see and know God the more we see and understand just what sin is in relation to him.  It’s a horror, a darkness trying to cover up the light, a disruptor of all that is right, true, honourable and good.   It’s an abomination against God.   See that.

Understand God all the more so you can see that. As we do that, we are better enabled to understand the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, and the magnitude of the love and grace he bestows up on us.

Understand God more, see him more clearly and you will understand Jesus’ sacrifice more dearly.

Want to follow along?  I’m currently on chapter 16 and working through one chapter a week.

Jesus, thou Joy of Loving hearts

August 12, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Wow!   I thought I’d do a familiar song today and discovered a raft of different tunes for this song.  So I’ll be sharing three different versions below, I wasn’t going to share all I found.  🙂

Anyways, this song was written by Bernard of Clairvaux, 12th Century.  He was a French Abbot who founded a monastery called Claire Vallée which over time morphed into Clairvaux.  He was very instrumental in the Catholic church, helping to heal schisms and watch for heresy.  He was blamed for the failure of the Second Crusade (something which saddened him greatly).  One of his disciples became Pope Eugene III.  This song originally appeared in Latin and as translated by Ray Palmer.

jesus thou joy of loving hearts

I really liked this accapella version that I found though the tune was completely different.  What do you think?

This is the tune I grew up with:

The Lyrics:

Jesus, Thou Joy of loving hearts,
Thou Fount of life, Thou Light of men,
From the best bliss that earth imparts,
We turn unfilled to Thee again.

Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood;
Thou savest those that on Thee call;
To them that seek Thee Thou art good,
To them that find Thee all in all.

We taste Thee, O Thou living Bread,
And long to feast upon Thee still;
We drink of Thee, the Fountainhead,
And thirst our souls from Thee to fill.

Our restless spirits yearn for Thee,
Wherever our changeful lot is cast;
Glad when Thy gracious smile we see,
Blessed when our faith can hold Thee fast.

O Jesus, ever with us stay,
Make all our moments calm and bright;
Chase the dark night of sin away,
Shed over the world Thy holy light.

This seems like a nice quiet version eh? It’s also a new one to me.

Which version are you familiar with? Perhaps even one I didn’t share! 🙂

Is the Joke Done?

August 10, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Laughter rings
Throughout the house
As Sit-com man
Feels like a louse

Time and time and time again
It’s always made
the fault
The Man

Sometimes I sit and ponder hard
What makes it funny?
Are men truly marred?

Why does the world
Show it so
Woman Right
Woman Smart.

Expense of men
Young or old it seems to be
Making fun of him
Not we.

But how we laugh
The Joke is fun
Sometimes I wonder
Is the joke really done?

is the joke done text with woman in background
