Imagine this… a five-minute Friday word that I SO do not connect with! Coffee, not for me please! So let’s see if we can actually have fun with this post.
It is funny (sad) how often I attend an event, a social after church, a rabbit show, or literally whatever, and all they have on tap is coffee. If you are lucky bottled water, or maybe a tang juice is offered, but mostly, just coffee. What are the options for those who don’t like coffee? Perhaps this poem might provide some insight into the options to offer.

Coffee, not for me
Every where I turn
Coffee seems to be.
Every social screams
won’t you drink me please?
Sometimes there’s no option
Only coffee to be served.
Bring your own the option assumed.
Won’t you like some tea?
A hot chocolate perhaps?
What about a brew?
A wine glass or two?
Water is a the
Elixer of life
(or so I’ve heard it said)
Add some flavouring?
Maybe some bubbles?
Spruce it up a bit you see?
I’d like a glass of milk
Strawberry is preferred,
though chocolate or Caramel
Thrills me just as much.
Tomato juice, carrot juice
even watermelon wine
Orange or apple or
even a glass of lemonade!!
Coke, Pepsi
Sprite’s the thing,
various sodas coloured well,
Rootbeer is my lad’s thing.
Consider well
my coffee snobs,
So many options to
add to your shelves!

Taking it deeper
So, what is YOUR drink of choice? Iced tea is the best thing ever, particularly a fruit flavoured one. 🙂
Now, take a moment here. Think about what coffee is for people.
For my hubby, a coffee in the morning is his wake-up call. A way for him to gather his brain cells together at the start of a day. For my mom, coffee is just part of her social sphere, something to gather over as you exchange all the latest news. My lad learned to drink coffee (ice latte’s mostly) one summer when at army camp. “It’s a good way to wake up mom!”
Regardless of your beverage choice, in time, you’ll get thirsty again. It’s just a fact of life.
In the bible, Jesus talked with a lady about water, living water where she’d never thirst. Near the end of his conversation with her in John 4, he said “13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Wouldn’t that be nice to have? A cool, ever-lasting drink of water. Think of how a good drink of whatever refreshment you have makes you feel like. How satisfying that morning coffee is, or how lovely that steaming hot chocolate is. Now have the feeling forever. Like the lady Jesus was talking to, turn to the Messiah. Be refreshed FOREVER. Trust me, well worth it!

That’s beautiful Annette (not written my FMF post yet)
I hope you got your post done!
I have friends who resonate with you and they always look for an alternative beverage.I guess my thoughts turn to your final sentence about how Jesus refreshes, water is life-giving and coffee is dehydrating!
i did not know that… coffee dehydrates? I wonder why that is….
You are so right – there are many drinks in life but only One can truly satisfy. So grateful to have both Jesus and coffee every morning 🙂
glad you like your coffee! Better even that you have the Lord.
Coffee used to be a part
of my begin-the-day repast,
but I’ve since found a better start,
and now it’s beer for breakfast.
I pop an ale when I awake;
immediately, I’m smitten
to in smiling joy partake
and that’s how poems get written.
The alcohol infuses brain
in the nick of time,
and there will be thus no strain
in the elusive rhyme…
perhaps, did Shakespeare write his plays
in an alcoholic haze?
well. that’s an interesting thought….
I love the way you handled this one. I am working on drinking more water each day but I don’t ever drink coffee.
Your title reminded me of a little round I used to teach my students to sing.
C-o-f-f-e-e, coffee is not for me,
It’s a drink some people wake up with,
That it makes them nervous is no myth,
Slaves to a coffee cup, they can’t give coffee up.
It was such a fun round to sing.
I’ve never heard that round at all. I wonder if it kept some children away from coffee.
That’s so good Annette. I love how you connect it to the story of the woman at the well finally being satisfied. I can’t drink coffee either, so I get it. I love a cold tea too. Thanks for sharing. Your FMF neighbour, at #3 this week. Kath
oh good! It just seems to fit you know?
I enjoy both coffee and tea,
well done! 🙂
I do drink 2 cups of coffee a day and the rest of the time I drink water. I have never liked sweet tea but do occasionally drink hot tea.
so you’re saying there’s hope for you yet? 🙂 so glad someone enjoys coffee
At any church function/fellowship I attend – there is coffee (yes!), usually a few sodas (which I don’t drink) and then copious amounts of sweet tea. As in, sugar water flavored with tea. Ugh. The beverage is not my favorite either!
Oh, your fellowship has a much broader selection available, how kind of them!
This is fantastic Annette, My favs definitely are coffee and ice tea. This is such a delightful poem. Blessings.
FMF #10
thank you Paula! 🙂 yay for iced tea!!!!!
I’m a dedicated coffee drinker (as you probably know!), but I always try to offer a range of alternatives when I’m hosting anything. Especially water – there’s nothing like fresh cold water! Soda is the beverage that I do not drink at all any more.
I love how you tied it all in with the living water. Well said!
