Miss Kate has offered us up a new word prompt this week. The word is cancel. I thought my weekly poem was going to go in a different direction, one that spoke to the need to understand the truth of God’s word. This one turned on its head though, and that’s okay eh? 🙂 Sometimes you need to follow where the words lead you. Freedoms are cancelled is the end result.

Freedoms are Cancelled
Hold the presses!
Stop the run!
New news!!!
Cancel it now!
And so the presses stop,
the printing stops.
A new article written,
Is it accurate?
Covid hits!
Cancel it all!
No meetings, no friends.
No gathering in groups.
Then pressures ease.
Restrictions lift.
Cautiously, slowly,
Life resumes.
But really,
below the surface,
Tensions seethe
Emotions roil.
People hate it,
the restrictions.
They only see
Infringement of rights.
Arguing with others,
Finding ways to pick fights.
Forgetting others,
in the quest for self.
I understand it,
The view of both sides.
Wanting to be free of masks and rules
yet… the need to protect fills my bones.
I wonder what will happen
When restrictions eased
Get cancelled.
Will fear rule?
Will there be a
boiling over of
resentment?
Or will grace prevail?
Relying on grace
is what sees me through.
Able to snooze
Persistent arguers.
But I fear
what will happen
When again
Freedoms are cancelled.

Did you know that Five minute Friday has been going on for a rather long time? A weekly gathering of writers who take the time to encourage each other along the way. Why don’t you join us? Be encouraged!

The word led you beautifully, elegantly and spot on once more. Loretta your end neighbour #4
Flipping auto correct! Fmf and not end
I know… sometimes autocorrect tries too hard and fails miserably. 🙂
Thank you Loretta. 🙂
Yep, relying on grace is what sees us through! xx
so true eh?
Sometimes we have troubles remembering that one man’s liberty stops where another man’s liberty begins. Or, in today’s terms, my right to stay healthy ends when someone else exercises their liberty to go maskless. We need to think beyond ourselves and our rights if we want to get along in harmony!
definitely. A good way to look at it.
You eloquently speak to our souls in this reality, and the photo is perfect! Thank you for naming our struggles. “May grace prevail!” (Karen, FMF #10)
I really hope it will… but watching what is going on…. I really wonder.
Annette, this is spot on! I think you have shared the feelings being felt by so many. We all need to be relying on grace right now to see us through. (visiting from FMF #13)
Oh thank you Yvonne. 🙂 grace needs to be seen and exercised.
Amen Anette, So wonderfully spoken. Thank you so much for sharing. Visit From FMF#8
thank you Paula.
Methinks there’s danger in grace, because accepting the revocation of freedom for a good caue makes it easier for those in power to impose more restrictions for lesser reasons.
They’ll glaly take our freedoms
if we give them up,
and in this our life becomes
a sip of hemlock cup,
for those who are in power
have not your best in mind;
their honeyed words turn sour,
and will leave you deaf and blind
to the control they truly crave,
that you hew to each decision
that in high-flown words they gave,
and accept this as your prison,
a land with safety’s primacy,
beholden to their dynasty.
there’s pros and cons right? grace doesn’t mean giving way, it’s means looking beyond to the person and heart of that person, beyond the action.
You captured the frustration and upset of all the cancellations very well. So sad that control and fear have only added to the challenges and are dividing so many people. Relying on grace and learning to practice it!
Divisions just seem so pronounced right now. I’m tired of the “this side that side debates”.
Beautiful, thought-provoking reflections!
thank you. 🙂
Love your reflections – and so good to see different views on here, all discussed with grace. We have just come out of a second lockdown in Wales which wasn’t so well received as the first! Many people now want an end to restrictions on meeting/numbers, and let people make their own decisions – but with masks on!
oh, people are getting fed up aren’t they? Change is so hard to handle.
Love this, and I thought I had already left you a comment, but it looks like it didn’t post.
(Visiting from #36)
sometimes tech is glitchy isn’t it?
Once again, spot on. Thank you.
you are most welcome. 🙂
