I was first introduced to “Give me Jesus” by Fernando Ortego. He remains one of my favourite Christian singers. His way of singing brings me back to God and his music makes me think. It’s a good combination. 🙂 Anyways, I was reminded of this song as I browsed through Spotify. This was the first song they pulled up for me.

The History
Give me Jesus was written by Jeremy Camp. Born in 1978 this American musician hails from Indiana. Jeremy grew up with a pastor for a father, and in turn became a minister himself. He has won numerous Christian music awards. His first wife died of cancer, he has since remarried to Adrienne. They currently live in Nashville with their children.
Lyrics to Give Me Jesus
In the morning, when I rise
In the morning, when I rise
Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world,
Just give me Jesus.
When I am alone,
When I am alone,
When I am alone,
Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world,
Just give me Jesus.
When I come to die,
When I come to die,
When I come to die,
Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world,
Just give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world,
You can have all this world,
You can have all this world,
Just give me Jesus.

Interesting – I don’t think I have heard this one. I’ll have to ask the girls if they know it, as they have listened to more of his music than I have.
Did the girls know it?
Just FYI, I read an article stating that this song was a slave hymn first published/printed in the 1860’s, however the actual hymn is much older than that.
varied history to hymns isn’t there?
