Speak, a poem

August 18, 2017 By Annette1 12 Comments

Speak?

Sunday it hit,

The pain in my head.
Making me wish
Temporarily I could be dead.
Migraines aren’t fun
The sunlight it hurts
Please tell me hun
You won’t force me to church?

Pain sits and sits
Never seems to abate
But this week I have work
It mustn’t be late!

Eagerly waiting
For the pain to leave
Each day I work
Sunglasses relieve

Anguish each day
When I awake
WHY TELL ME WHY
Won’t this pain hit the lake?

Knowing that God
Holds me close to his heart
I know I can work
I can do my part
Slowly I find,
My voice as I type
So glad I can make
This room almost dark

ACK!!!  I have no more letters to work with, and I’m getting tired.   Just have to say I am so glad that God gave me the ability to slowly.. oh.. so slowly.. to find the words I needed to make the five day blog hop work out as well as it did!   Sunglasses and darkness..it took four days for that migraine to leave!!!  AH.. don’t want to live with that again for another year!  But to bed I must go, I don’t want that massive headache to come back again!

Place: Some to hold dear

August 11, 2017 By Annette1 10 Comments

Walking through life
one comes across many a place.

Places to fear
Places to hold dear.

One such place we recently called home for one week.

A place to camp called Grundy Lake.
Filled with many smaller places.

Like a pond filled with
Black Crappie
Smiling Snapping turtles
Dragonflies
Pike
Frogs

A swamp biome
Home to
Sundew
Bladderworts
Pitcher Plants
Blandings Turtles
Biting flies
and swooping birds.

Canadian Shield home to
Jack Pine
Blue Birds
Red Squirrels
White Throated Sparrows
Massassauga Rattlers

A place to
Relax
Create
Kayak
Fish
Swim
Hike
Read books in the sun
Swat Skeeters
Watch falcons soar
Meet strangers and chat
Enjoy God’s creation

This is a place we enjoy full well.

Wouldn’t you like to go to such a place?

Life Pleasures 1: Hike

July 18, 2017 By Annette1 4 Comments

One of my pleasures in life is to go hiking with my family.   The older the lad gets the more he doesn’t stay with me and the more he hikes off out front with his dad.  They frequently check back with me to make sure I’m not lost or stuck as I’m not as nimble as I used to be… but it’s fun to get out and explore.

I thought you might like to see some of the walks/hikes we’ve done and some of the treasures I’ve found along the way.  ๐Ÿ™‚

I admittedly have a thing for mushrooms.  Whenever I go on a hike or walk I’m bound to find some sort of fungi to take a picture of.  One year I went for a walk and I found red and orange fungi, I was so stoked as that was a first time event.  Unfortunately…those pictures have been lost and I was so sad to discover that. But look!  I still have pictures from 2016!  ๐Ÿ™‚

I managed to get a clear, up close and personal shot of this fungi.  Are they so interesting looking?

Anyways…you might not be as keen on fungi as I am so moving on….

Who doesn’t love a leaf strewn path with trees all around, making you feel like you are alone in the world… just you and nature.  The sound of birds singing, the patter of small critters scurrying away, and if you are quiet enough and early enough in the morning…the odd deer moving silently through the trees.  It is SO cool!

You know, I like geese and ducks and what not.  Waterfowl are pretty cool.  But in town when you walk around and they are begging for treats it’s like.. ICK.. go away stupid birds.  But when you see those same birds in a natural setting it’s like .. wow.

I’ve been trying to find some of the neat rock ones and stuff we’ve seen but I think they have alas… gone the way of most of my cool fungi pictures….  ๐Ÿ™   From the trails up north and stuff but I….. ah well.. you get the picture right?   Long walks/hikes in the middle of nowhere is a lovely lovely thing to do.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Recipe: Beef Stew with Bread

July 11, 2017 By Annette1 4 Comments

Yesterday I decided to try out a bread in a box recipe and needed something to go with it.  I thought stew would be good thing to go with it and was right.

The fellows helped me put it together since I’d just gotten home from a walk and my feet were sore so I didn’t want to stand too long.  Wasn’t that lovely of them?

How to toss it together.

First off .. make the bread.  I used a box from Sunset Gourmet called “Cheesy Garlic Beer Bread Mix”.  I made it using a strong ale that hubby said was getting a touch old.   This bread needs to sit for half hour before using.  It’s great for dips, soups and stews.

In the store, show the lad how to price out the cheaper cuts of beef since we’ll be making stew we don’t need fancy meat.   Let him pick out the right package and tell him GOOD JOB.

At home, ask hubby to cut up the beef into small pieces as you dice up 1 1/2 onions and three stalks of celery.  Dump it all in the stew pot.

Liberally add some salt and pepper.  Brown in a little touch of oil.

Get the lad to wash up some potatoes for dad to dice (I think he did three large), and then set him to shelling the garden fresh peas.

Meanwhile dig out the carrots from the fridge and dice them up.. ended up with about four large carrots.

When Dad is done with the taters watch in amazement as he tosses in tons of different seasonings and then bumble around saying.. don’t we have a thickener of some sort I can throw in here?

Suggest three bay leaves to add to the pot as you dig through your stash of seasoning packages and find some dry chicken gravy mix to toss in.  Explaining to the lad that adding gravy will make it a stew instead of soup as stews are thick with less liquid.

Throw in a box of chicken bouillon/stock (the liquid stuff Campbells makes).. though if my rabbit stock had been thawed out I would have used that instead.  ๐Ÿ™‚

When it’s all in the pot look and say “oh, need a bit more celery” so do up two more stalks.

Discover a couple of tomatoes going soft so turn them into mush before adding to pot (saucing them before adding to the pot means a boy child not turned off by cooked tomato).   Dice up one orange bell pepper as well.

Let stew for two hours.

In end come up with a stuff slightly on the spicy side (oops.. forgot the sundried tomato mix has some chilis in it hun).   But realize the bread counteracts the spicyness quite nicely…so doing what I intended was an excellent choice with this stew.   The lad exclaims “Mom!   We need to make this again, it was good!!!”

One of the things I love about stew is it comes out differently every single time, and when hubby and son help, makes it even better.  ๐Ÿ™‚

All told we put in
1 package of stir fry beef strips
four large carrots
1.5 onions
3 bay leaves
5 stalks celery
About a cup of green peas
3 large potatoes
a variety of seasonings : salt, pepper, sundried tomato, basil, oregano, garlic and more.
one box liquid bouillon/chicken stock
package of dry chicken gravy
about a tablespoon of corn starch
two tomatoes
touch of oil for browning

If you make it, tell me what seasonings you would use.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Blessings in Abundance

June 30, 2017 By Annette1 10 Comments

When I saw the word blessings this morning you know what I immediately thought of?

My day yesterday.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Seriously.

It was a rainy/cloudy type morning so we kinda honestly vegged.  My lad wanted to watch Harry Potter movies and since he was motivated and finished his summer schedule early we did!

This was so  nice, spending time with family AND I was able to finally start the book of Romans.

Later we headed out of the house because he had a birthday party to go to.   He chatted the WHOLE way there rather than being stuck into his tablet games.

I dropped him off.
Then headed out to visit with my mom.

We had such a delightful visit.  Seriously.
We chatted about this and that.  Serious moments, light hearted moments, just good time to visit. She took me out and got me a purse, wallet AND supper.  ๐Ÿ™‚

She even let me borrow her camera so I could take pictures of a small children’s book for a review (it’s coming), looked through it and gave me her comments.  Then she kept it as a gift for a wee niece of mine. (daughter of a niece).

Picking up my lad again I had a chance to chat with the birthday boy’s mom.  So nice to get caught up again.  I was reminded about how I need to take more time to visit with friends.

Then on the way home my lad chatted all the way home again.  It was so nice to talk with him, hearing about the things he’s learning about, finding out about the party he was at and all the good things that happened there.  Just delightful.  We don’t talk enough sometimes I think. It’s so easy in the car to plug in a story to listen to, that we forget to just chat sometimes.

When I got home and after I got him settled, I was so wired from the day that going to bed seemed hard and then a friend contacted me (two actually).  One with a request that I was able to fill… which made her happy (which made me happy), and the second was a conversation with another friend (who is close to my heart).  ๐Ÿ™‚

My heart was so full of the blessings of God.

In the comments… let me know what blessings you’ve received lately so I can celebrate with you eh?  ๐Ÿ™‚

Summer Schedule in our House

June 30, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

So at the beginning of June I was starting to feel a tad frazzled.. okay.. honestly.. I was feeling frazzled at the beginning of May but felt like I needed to push through as this was a tough year for us and I felt like I NEEDED to get the lad through a few things…

Went on vacation (it was fun and a good break but VERY tiring).

Got back and just COULD NOT get back into the routine of doing school so I told the lad.. You are officially on Summer Schedule.

“What’s that mean Mom”? he asked curiously.

It means that when life is going normally you will do the following

1. Math.. choose one of three math programs, mix it up if you want or just do one. Matters not.  Just math, three days a week.  Choice of UnLock, Smartick or Kumon.

2. Veritas Press.  Finish up whatever course you are working on.  When it’s done.. it’s done for the rest of summer.  USE IT UP!  Three days a week.

3. Language arts of some sort.   Right now that’s Pirates.  He also has a book he’s writing, editing, spell checking etc.  Again three days a week.

4. Foodbank day.  Just be helpful.  Nothing more, nothing less.  Be helpful.  To that end he is packing and unpacking cars, stocking shelves, helping with dating goods, working hard on delivery days bringing things in and putting them away.

5. Fridays.. art and STEM and reviews.

That caveat is there that if we have a big review to do that he’ll help me out and we’ll work on things together.

The understanding is there that if we have other plans .. it’s summer.. and school can and WILL fly out the window.  ๐Ÿ™‚  Vacation will happen, trips to the beach will happen, international students will happen, digging up the gardens will happen, yard sales and book sales and birthday parties, and visits with family and day trips out of town and so much more awaits us in Ontario.

WHY don’t I give him the entire summer off?
He’s an only child, doing school for an hour, three days a week won’t hurt him, and to have fun building stuff together on Fridays doesn’t feel like school eh?   It’s good to keep learning eh?  Gives yah something to do, means you don’t forget things, and it’s an aid to your mental capacities.

The crew is doing a round up post… go follow along eh?
