A nice read of a little girl watching a tadpole grow up.

Dory Story by Jerry Pallota

This book has a surprise ending that made us both laugh! Good story as well of the web of life.

Swim the silver sea, joshie Otter by Nancy White Carlstrom

“why’s he called Joshie Mommy?”
“Why didn’t his mommy want to play?”
“why didn’t he listen to his mommy?”
These were questions I was asked while reading this book. It was a great cause of wonderment.

The Blizzard by Betty Ren Wright

a good story of a boy with a birthday in the winter and his disappointment at his cousins not being able to help celebrate…because of “The Blizzard”. My lad asked tons of questions, and was happy for the boy at the end of the story.

Rabbit by Alison Catley

the value of this book to me was in helping my son understand that more than one person can have a stuffy named Rabbit…and they don’t all have to look the same. He was quite amazed by this fact. 🙂

Rabbit’s Good News by Ruth Lercher Bornstein

We’ve had this book about before. it’s just a delightful spring time book. 🙂

Bicycle Race by Donald Crews

DID NOT like this book. It earned a very hearty frown from a five year old lad.

Five Little Monkeys go Shoppings by Eileen Christelow

What a fun read and a smile inducer. “mommy, those monkeys don’t listen!”

Waters by Edith Newlin Chase

This book inspires me to want to do a unit study on it, and perhaps I might. Filled with Canadiana trivia/artwork.

How Groundhog’s Garden Grew by Lynne Cherry

This book was okay, not great, but a decent read. Groundhog learned to not only grow a garden, but how to share. Always a good thing that. NOT an oft requested book.

Lucy Comes to Stay by Rosemary Wells

Wells has again written a book to be enjoyed and read well. Reads well outloud, causes questions to be asked. A good book.

Bob the builder, snowed under. by somebody I’m sure..

It’s a typical bob the builder book. Something to be built, something to be learned. The lad was very ho-hum with this book.

WAIT!! I want to tell you a story by Tom Williams.

He liked it but… the ending was somewhat less than what the boy wanted it to be. You’ll have to read why a cat-loving boy wouldn’t appreciate the ending. It even made my hubby chuckle. 🙂

The Three Swinging Pigs by Vicky Rubin.

If you KNOW the story of the three little pigs you might appreciate this book. We’ve read a couple books that twist the tale a bit, or at least tell it from a different perspective. This one was an OFT repeated tale.

Shaun the Sheep – Shaun the Farmer and Can’t stand the heat.

It’s the shaun the sheep videos in book form. Still enjoyed immensely by one five year old boy. He asked lots of questions which he didn’t ask in the videos.

Click, clack, moo…and more. by Doreen Cronin et al

Oh..you have to just go get the book and read it. Laugh about what happens. See the farmer’s frustration and just enjoy a children’s book. really…go get it and just have fun with it. 🙂

Jack the bear by Christina Leist.

i have to admit, when I first read this book I thought ‘eh.. don’t need to read this again’. BUT… it grew on me. The lad liked it as well. Probably because the fox was so perplexed by Jack the Bear.

The Great Pig Escape and The Great Pig Search both books by Eileen Christelow.

Boy oh boy were these books read over and over and over again. Those silly pigs. Both were fun reads, both made a boy ask questions, both had decent illustrations, and were just fun to read. They could be made educational should one so desire…but sometimes fun books just need to be read. 🙂

Farm fresh cats – scott santoro

The lad just LOVES this book, and I have to admit, it’s a good read for me too. If you have a child who likes cats..get this book out. If you have a child who likes the unexpected…get this book out. It is a fun read. We get this book out over and over and over again, and everytime we read it he’s right there looking at the pages and listening actively.

Meow – Judy Reinen

Justin says “I love the cats in it”.
And this book is full of cats, some in funny places. Makes a lad smile. 🙂

have you seen birds – by joanne oppenheim

I got this book out because the illustrations were done by barbara reid, and she lives up to her standard. BUT it ended up being a good book. Inspired the boy child to act out the different birds using his stuffed animals.

Justin says “there are too many birds. That it starts with a cat!”

I am Canada – heather patterson

Not a bad book at all. Introduces children doing different things in this beloved country of ours. As Justin says about this book “I AM CANADA”. 🙂

Room for Rabbit – Roni Schotter

This book was oft requested. It’s about a child dealing with the after-affects of divorce. Wasn’t sure about introducing that topic to Justin but overall he was more curious about what rabbit had to say to his little girl.

Wish Come True Cat – Ragnhild Scamell

Sometimes wishes come true in ways we don’t expect.
Justin says “that a cat goes thump on a window” 🙂

The other goose – judith kerr

This book is a fun read about a lonely goose. It performs a good deed and gets an interesting reward because of an observant little girl.
Justin says “that the goose things there’s a goose in the car!”

Spring Thaw – steven schnur

this book makes me think I could make a unit study or lap book out of it. A decent book with different observations about a spring thaw.
Justin says “there’s a horse in it”.

Fox walked alone

what an excellent book. The lad enjoyed this one so much he almost has it completely memorized. it’s a noah’s ark story.

Scaredy Squirrel

This book was just a fun read about a very silly squirrel. Generated questions of “why does he wash his hands?” “why is he scared so that?”

There’s a cow under my bed!

Another silly book that had the boy looking serious and sucking his thumb. Not a lot of comments made, but lots of intense listening.

A Pioneer Thanksgiving.

I got this book out for the craft and game ideas, never did get around to it as it’s been a busy three weeks, complete with a cold. Some good stuff in it though, also read one story to the lad which kept him curious and interested.

Wake Up Henry Rooster!

Another just fun read. An easy to read story about a fun loving rooster, inspired lots of crowing by the lad at night when we read it.

Miko, It was me, Mom!

a good read, entertaining. Inspired questions. Talked about burglars, and why some things are bad and other things are right.

Nobody’s Nosier than a cat

We have had this book out so many times. A favourite of my cat-loving lad. it’s a fun read, you get to watch a cat chase a mouse throughout the book. The lad has it 90% memorized and KNOWS when I miss a page.

A dog for a friend

Requested twice to read by the lad, this book is a quieter book with a surprise in it. Caused a “huh?” from the lad. It’s a longer read so not one I chose as a bed time story, more of a day time story book which is when I chose to read it.

Clara and the bossy

The lad surprised me with this one, he chose it several times to read as a night time story. it’s a good read about friendships and being yourself.

Camels Always Do.

This is a true stories about camels in Canada. I found it quite interesting, the lad less so. “I don’t like camels Mommy” he told me with all seriousness.

Spark the firefighter

Would YOU think of a dragon being a firefighter? I wouldn’t. Read the book to find out why. 🙂

Two Dogs Swimming

This is a make me smile book. Caused the lad to pose questions as well. It’s a decent read about two best friend dogs with one small problem.

It’s Moving day by Pamela Hickman

The lad likes this book. He asks questions. He learns some facts, though not all are accurate. It starts as it finishes and he really thinks that is interesting.

It is a blue Spruce award book.

Benjamin’s Balloon by Alan Baker

A favourite of the lad. He likes the borrow the phrase “not bad for a beginner”. Just catches his fancy.

Tiger Can’t Sleep by S.J. Fore

This is a fun book. It has a tiger in it, so life is good. As Justin says “he’s a silly cat!” The closing always brings a smile.

When Stella was very, very small by Marie-Louise Gay

Another Blue Spruce award book, the lad found this book intriguing the first couple of times we read it, but he hasn’t requested, picked it out, or wanted me to pick it out since then. I thought it a decent read for the under 8 crowd.

You can’t rush a cat by Karleen Bradford

The boy loves this book, and it’s one that an adult could enjoy reading to their child as well. Fairly deserving of being a blue spruce award book. That little cat is just TOO intriguing.

Little Lions by Jim Arnosky

This book is a huge favourite. We’ve had this book out for ages and ages. Just loved this book. It’s a simple read, good contrasts, and caused questions to be asked. Good book.

Tiger by Nick Butterworth

Yes, we got tiger out again. A favourite of our boy. A young tabby cat who wants to act like a tiger. Good book. Just loves this book and has it well memorized.

Hardworking Puppies by Lynn Reiser

A battle I think will ensue between a boy and his father. We plan to get a dog in the spring…the boy wants a beagle. HE LOVES the beagle, he’s met three and this book has a beagle in it and therefore is a oft requested read. The boy’s father says NO BEAGLES! 🙂 It shall be interesting to see how this one turns out. 🙂

The Subway Mouse by Barbara Reid

What an enjoyable book to read. It’s another blue spruce award book. The lad enjoys this book. I read it and wonder hmmm… could I turn this into a lapbook or unit study??? 🙂

An enjoyable read, it’s another blue spruce award book. An oft requested read by the lad.

Like the other Stanley book, this one has been well enjoyed by a boy child. Caused questions to be asked which I always like. 🙂

Fly Guy books by tedd arnold

if you haven’t met the fly guy books yet… go get ’em. They are fun read and the young crowd thoroughly enjoys them. The librarians at the London library recommended them to us. 🙂

The F Team by Anne Laurel Carter

The lad was unimpressed by this book. He just didn’t like it…couldn’t even finish reading the book. Also a blue spruce award book, but this one was a no go.

The Farm Team by Linda Bailey

Read this book twice with the lad, but the lad didn’t really like it. The big bear…the boy didn’t like him. “he’s bad mommy”.

Little Bunny’s Pacifer Plan by Boelts

The lad likes this book. I’m hoping to use it as an encouragement to give up the thumb sucking. 🙂 We’ll probably get it out again since the lad likes it so much.
