Canada Book: In the Red Canoe

October 10, 2017 By Annette1 4 Comments

I like to go in the red canoe
I sit low in the bow
I can paddle by myself
My Grampa taught me how.

The lyrical start to this lovely picture book, led the way along a quite nature journey between grandparent and child.
This book is an ideal start to a look into the Canadian wilderness for young elementary students. Learning about frogs, stars, the river and so much more.

Can’t you just see the connection between grandparent and child?  The joy of experiencing bird flight through the eyes of a child, of wandering down a river together?
The full colour illustrations bring the gentle poem to life, helping us see through the yes of the youngster, sitting back on grandpas, knee, rowing down the river, chasing frogs and so forth.  Don’t you just love the colours?

I just love the joy on the face of this youngster.  All the fun she is having with her grandpa.

This would be a great book to read with grandparent and child. Or for a parent to share with a child missing her or his grandpa. It’s a great preliminary book for a Canadian (or if you will ANYWHERE) nature study.   It’s just a lovely, easy read, that will delight your heart and give you oodles to talk about with your students (with the well drawn illustrations).

Canada Book: Canada Counts

October 3, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

Ready to learn some facts about Canada?   Have a child learning their numbers?   How about combining two lessons in one?

Canada Counts…learn to count from 1-20 as well as 37, 1867, and more.  Counting is so much more than the first few numbers, it’s learning and seeing how they all fit together.

About:
Now children can
learn their numbers with Canada Counts. On these pages, new
artwork illustrates numbers from 1 to 20, as well as other important
Canadian numbers such as 1867 and 1982. There may be 1 walking boy, but
there are 3 territories, 4 seasons, and 9 Supreme Court justices.   With Canada Counts, Charles Pachter has written another love letter to our country.

What you get:
Good artwork with facts to go along.  Would have known we had a beaver and otter airplane?   I knew about the beaver, but the otter had escaped my notice.

Interesting Facts.  It was an good connection for me learning more about the Famous Five, as I had just learned about the famous five at the WW1 and Canada exhibit we were just at.  Connections built eh?

Counting!  And not just the basics of 1-20, but all kinds of numbers that are important to us as Canadians.  We learn history within our counting!  🙂

Provincial information, even as we count.   Good to learn these important facts. And to see our flags alongside.

Canada Book: Canada Year By Year

September 26, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

This book has a wee bit of everything to celebrate all that’s good in Canada through her 150 years of being.  I liked it!   A well written book that touches on all aspects of Canadian life.

About the book:  A year-by-year tour of Canada’s fascinating history highlights a single
milestone for every year from the country’s founding in 1867 up to its
150th anniversary in 2017. Divided into ten distinct eras, coverage
ranges from politics, sports, business and arts and culture, and
includes significant events both at home and in world affairs
.

So what did I think you ask?   I thought this was a rather neat book, seeing the highlights, at least in the eyes of the author, over the past 150 years was very interesting.  🙂

What drew my attention?
The years are divided into 10 year sections.  Making it easy to target the era most interested in.

The coverage isn’t focused on just one area of Canadian life.

Shows Canada at home and in the the world.   A great timeline of Canadian life, the easy and the not so easy included.

Profiles of Canadians, from various walks of life. Prime Ministers, athletes, women in action, and more.

Good division of white space, text and images.  Book designed to appeal to all ages, at a level easily read by most children.

What can I say, this is an good book that reveals a lot about Canada, many facts that I previously wasn’t aware of. If you are learning about Canada, check out this book, you’ll be amazed at the accomplishments of my wonderful land.

Canada Book: Crazy About Canada

September 13, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

Crazy about Canada is a neat book all about Canada.

This book takes the questions Canadian children have about Canada and answers them. Pretty neat eh?

“Vivien Bowers (as a character in her own book) and her 12-year-old,
Internet-savvy sidekick, Morton, take on each question with
determination, candid curiosity, and a great sense of humor. The answers
to kids’ burning (and sometimes freezing) questions about this
country’s wildlife, geography, and cultures are presented here in an
energetic, refreshing format.”

The types of questions children ask about Canada:

Don’t you just love the clarity of the images, and the reader friendly text?

I just love when a book for children and youth teaches me something too.  Did you know this fact about fire?   It surprised the lad and I.

Who would have thought you could have a fire underground!!!
I thought it was great how there was liberal use of not only photos, but also graphics. The mix of white space with text and illustrations was well balanced.  The text was informative without being over whelming, giving just enough information to answer the question without going off into rabbit trails.

Canada Book: Jasper Explores the Pacific Coast.

September 5, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

If you are ever studying Canada you need to pick up the Jasper books, seriously.   They give a good look at Canada while following the tale of a cute stuffy and his friends.

Jasper is a polar bear stuffy who likes to explore the land that he lives in.  The book we are looking at today is called Jasper Explores the Pacific Coast.

You get easy to read text, with plenty of pictures.

He covers all the big things of the area that he is going through.   The mountains, the rivers and lakes, the tourist places like Buchart Gardens.

He even gives a map of where he is!

I love the paw prints that lead from page to page, the fun story that will appeal to younger readers and the clear sharp images.   There are many full page images, and finding Jasper and the things that caught his attention delighted my lad when he was younger.

So if you are studying Canada.. pick up the Jasper books, they’ll add a great overview and are a fun read as well.  🙂

Canada Book: Canadian Province Notebook

June 26, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

This is a different Canada book than I normally would post. This is a notebooking workbook that I have used off and one with my lad throughout our homeschooling journey. I haven’t USED the book persay, but I’ve used the ideas found within it’s pages.

Let me tell you about “Canadian Province Notebook”.

Filled with notebooking and workbook pages that will help you work through the Canadian Provinces.

The book starts off with teaching students how to find and request letters of information from provinces.   Granted with the ease now of going to provincial website and simply connecting with their tourism department, having to write off for letters is a bit not as necessary I think.  Though the practice of learning how to write letters requesting help is a good one to learn.

It also walks the student through how to use a bibliography and how to write cards with all the information on them from the books they use for a report.   It even provides a checklist for the student to use when writing their reports in the notebooking pages to make sure they’ve included all the information they need to and are on topic.

One of the features I like is that the inside front and back covers have the provincial symbols (except for the crests and flags) of each of the provinces and territories.  It is a touch outdated as it doesn’t have Nunavut in it.
