Sometimes, just sometimes, you need to read a book twice to make sure you understand where it is going.  When I read the description of Autumn Peltier, Water Warrior I thought it would be about a woman from history.  Instead, it’s about a girl of today and how history has influenced her.   I urge you to learn the history, and see the present fight for the Anishinaabe and others.

About the Author and the book

Autumn Peltier’s story is told in short form by Carole Lindstorm.  Carole Lindstorm is Anishinaabe/Metis and an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe.  Her goal is to write about her people and their strength and resilience.   Always and avid reader, she discovered her love of writing children’s literature when her son was a young child.  She has written three books.

About the book:

Ms. Peltier’s story is told in the book Autumn Peltier, Water Warrior.  It tells the story of how Indigenous women have long cared for the land and water, which in turn sustains all life on Earth – honoring their ancestors and providing for generations to come. Yet there was a time when their voices and teachings were nearly drowned out, leaving entire communities and environments in danger and without clean water.

But then came Grandma Josephine and her great-niece, Autumn Peltier.

Digging Deeper

You’ll find clear, big, and easy to read text telling this story of inspiration.   I always love a book where I can choose to read it with a good of children, or with a single child gathered next to me.   In this particular story, the water tells the story.

Water tells it’s story from the beginning to the present.  How at first everyone helped water creating ways to it to be safe for seven generations into the future.  Then other voices began to speak who didn’t listen to or care for water.  People needed to learn about the importance of water again.   People need to speak out for what is right.  Clean water for all!

Throughout you will see images of water, with blues flowing throughout leading from one page to the other.   The closing notes will teach you about Grandma Josephine and the Water Walk.  35 days of walking around Lake Superior where the water was not always blue and clean.   The encouragement is strong throughout…. fight well for life-giving water!

My Thoughts

You can see the heart that Carole Lindstrom has for encouraging people to fight for what is right.   In Autumn Peltier Water Warrior we see a young lady learning to care for water.  Of seeing the examples of her ancestors to encourage her along the way.  Indigenous activism, to help make communities and the world a better place to live.   This is a good thing yes?

Two New Years

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to grow up in a household with two distinctly different cultures?   How would parents decide to raise their children?   Would one culture be emphasized over another or would they share equally?   In Two New Years we get the privilege of seeing how one family lives out their decisions.

Basic Details for Two New Years

Title: Two New Years
Author: Richard Ho
Illustrator: Lynn Scurfield
Publisher: Chronicle Books
Pages: 44
Intended Audience: 3-5 years
Genre: Picture Book, Jewish Fiction, Asian, Asian-American, Children’s Holidays, New Years
Available formats: Hardcover, Kindle

Author and Book Synopsis

Richard Ho is a member of the Jedi Order and I think he lives in New York.  He, like many other children, had several aspirations when he grew up. Eventually though, he became a scriptwriter and editor for an educational website.  Later on he became a children’s book writer.

Two New Years brings us into the world of a multi-cultural family.  Chinese and Jewish roots, two cultures that have their own distinctive holidays and ways of celebrating them.  Can they find common threads that weave them together?   As the multicultural family welcomes in each new year, they savor the shared values and familiar themes that bridge two calendars and two cultures.

Looking More Closely

You will love the vibrant colours throughout, bringing to life, the illustrations of Lynn Scurfield. Bright happy faces.  The striking colours draw us into the excitement of the New Years holiday. It is so interesting to see how different cultures celebrate the same holiday.

The font is easy to read, this would be easy to read with a group of children gathered round, or with a single child sitting in close.  Read the words, hear the tale, one family, taking the time to teach and experience two ways to enjoy the same holiday.

The fun is in the colours and imagined smells.  It would be so easy to create art and craft add-ons to help children solidify what they are learning.  Can you see yourself making some Jewish dishes, or standing by a river releasing the years mistakes to the currents?

My Thoughts

Such a neat way of showing deliberateness in sharing your cultural norms.  Of parents not fighting over how to celebrate the holidays, but instead finding ways to share the best of both.

Two New Years with it’s bright colours, ease of reading, and delightful way of sharing the fun and excitement of the New Year.   Celebrate the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah in the fall, and then in the spring celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year.  One holiday, two celebrations, two cultures delighted in.  Check it out, you’ll learn a thing or two and smile about it in the process.  🙂

Have you ever gotten a book with an idea in mind what it would be like, and then when you get it you go oh, I was wrong!  But in the end, you go, well, this book is exactly what it says it is, even if it wasn’t what you expected.  ABC’s of the World’s Religions is a book that I unexpectedly expected.  🙂  Teaching children about world religions while walking through the alphabet.  Compare, see similarities, note the differences, and deepen your understanding.

About the Author and Book

Rev. Vicki Michela Garlock, Ph.D likes to travel and has been all over the world with her family.  With education featuring a huge part in her working and learning life she taught as a professor of psychology.  She was also an Education director for Jubilee community working within a faith setting.  Her most recent studies have been to learn about different world religions and how they are taught to children.

In ABCs of the World’s Religions, kids travel around the world and across the centuries exploring the beauty of the world’s major faith traditions.  Learn along with kids as you explore sacred spaces, holydays, and rituals in several different religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

ABC's of the World's Religions

Digging Deeper into the ABC’s of the World’s Religions

Author Garlock does not always take the time to define terms that she uses.  If I were reading this page to a child, I would first look up what Muslimah means (It means Muslim woman).  I did not immediately make that connection particularly since the illustrations show men and women with head coverings.

Each two-page spread features

  • rhyming couplets on the left side
  • further explanation on the right side, often comparing religions to each other
  • Appropriate for any home, faith-based or not
  • Non-devotional in nature, making them suitable for the classroom

Within the pages you will find beautiful artwork which serve to highlight the topic of each letter.  You’ll find the artwork vibrant and provides lots of talking points with children.   I love how the artist includes the letter into the illustrations.

My Thoughts

I have to admit that I kinda struggle with the ABC’s of the World’s Religions.  I like that children are taught about the various world’s religions because it’s good to know what others think.  It’s good to draw people together instead of separating them, finding commonality in belief builds bridges.

Initially I was not happy with this tome because it wasn’t what I expected. I expected a book that would say A is for Animism B is buddhist etc and Just basically give a summary of different religions of the world.  Whereas what I received was a book that seems to compare religions, and this is what I think makes me uncomfortable with it as a children’s book.

I think I am concerned about the confusion comparing religions can  introduce to children.   Using this book as a primer to help 14 year olds think about their faith, or in a Christian setting helping them see the superiority of the Christian faith.  I just hesitate to yes, this is a book to read with the under 12 year old crowd.  It may be an abundance of caution on my part, but confusing little ones… shouldn’t we have an abundance of caution about doing?

So it’s indeed a mixed reaction.   The building of bridges, the helping teens to discuss world religions and hopefully define their faith better against the potential to confuse young minds.  It’s a tough call.

Oh, what a fun way to take a tour of Canada, just in time for Hallowe’en!   Travel far and wide, have some spooky (because well.. ghosts!) but not scary fun with little Ghost in A Haunted Ghost Tour in Canada.  Can you guess where a Little Ghost might pop up next?  Floating up over a boat, sliding between seats in a bus, or popping up at a concert?  Will he be in Winnipeg, Vancouver or St. John’s?

Author and Book Details

Living in England, Louise Martin has written and edited a wide range of books and magazines for children. She is joined in England by her food-motivated whippet and her family.

About the book

Experience a fa-BOO-lous Halloween with Little Ghost on a tour of all the landmarks you know and love in Canada!     Little Ghost is going on a spooky Halloween tour around Canada, and you’re invited to ride along! Take a trip with the Ghost family as they travel from Ottawa to Vancouver and visit favorite landmarks such as CN Tower and Sambro Island Lighthouse. Along the way, Little Ghost loves tricking everyone . . . until Little Ghost hears the biggest BOO ever! Make this Halloween season spook-tacular with this cute, not-so-scary rhyming picture book that takes you on an adventure through your home.

Looking more closely

Rhyming lyrics lead us on a busy tour all throughout Canada.  This book is fun to read quietly OR aloud.  I find the font a bit small to read with a group of children gathered round.

But the fun of the lyrics makes it great as you hunt down local landmarks.  The specifically created for Canada illustrations highlight such things as the parliament buildings, totems, and lighthouses.

Can you find Little Ghost as he tries to scare everyone wherever their journeys take them?  Could he pop out of a bus?  Or perhaps slide around the local lighthouse?   Young readers will have fun find Little Ghost as he careens around Canada helping everyone had a fa-boo-lous Hallowe’en.

The illustrations by Gabriele Tafuni just add more fun to the pot.  Colours that are bright and inviting, pages filled with lots of talking points for Hallowe’en activities.  You’ll see all sorts of activities that make the holiday season fun, and lots of fun with pumpkins!

My Thoughts

I’m not a big one for celebrating Hallowe’en.   We have candy here if kids come about the house, but it’s not like we decorate or anything.  And I didn’t read Hallowe’en books with the lad when he was young, but I kinda like this one.  It’s fun looking for Little Ghost, and it’s not spooky scary.  And it takes children around the best country in the world!  🙂    If you aren’t adverse to Hallowe’en completely and want a fun way to look around Canada… pick up A Haunted Ghost Tour in Canada.  You and your children should have fun with the lyrics, have lots of talking points in the pictures, and maybe even learn a thing or two.

Meesha Makes Friends

Making friends can be really hard.  I remember my son asking me once “how do you make friends?  I don’t know how to do it!”    I gave him a good answer at the time, and kept him in my prayers, and now at 18 he has a nice core of friends who really care that he exists.  🙂   If he had been younger, Meesha Makes Friends is a book I would have shared with him as it points to truth.  Do stuff that you enjoy, and people that enjoy the same stuff will show up.  Be willing to talk with them, and before you know it, friendship happens. I can’t wait to tell you more.  🙂

Pages: 32
Intended Audience: 4-8 years old
Genre: Friendship, Emotions, Big feelings, children’s book, Picture Book

About the Author and book

The Author

Tom Percival is both the author and illustrator of Meesha Makes Friends. I found this website for him which lists some of the books he’s been part of.   He has written a number of children’s books and lives in Stroud, with his family, which is in the United Kingdom.

The Book

Meesha is a young girl who has a hard time making friends.  She finds them too noisy and chaotic and likes to spend time with her creations.  They aren’t noisy or chaotic or in any way confusing.   But she still wants to have friends.   In this story we see her taking a risk and making some friends.

Digging Deeper

We learn who Meesha is, a quiet, creative girl.   She likes making things and people, well, people can be a bit hard.  And making friends… how does one DO that!?!?!?

The pages show her mood most clearly.  When Meesha is frightened or unsure the colours are darker with less brilliant colours. Whereas when she’s happy the whole page is lighter with lots of colour.   You’ll find the font is very easy to read.

Children with a variety of skin tones are featured throughout.

Making friends means taking risks…. is Meesha up for that?   Of course she is!   Teaching, seeing, working together, before you know it, a friendship can be built!

My Recommendation

I hope you have seen enough of Meesha Makes Friends to peek your interest.   I think Tom Percival did a great job of showing two of the ways the people can make friends.  He does so in a way that is simple and easy and makes for a good story to read.

A good book for children is one that parents/teachers/caregivers enjoy reading as well, and this one was well done. For parents how may be homeschooling children that are unsure about how to make friends, help your children see how it can be done. I find in my homeschooling journey that parents raising singleton children struggled with this the most, so help your children! Enjoy a good read while you do so.

About the Author and Book

The Author

Dr. Rekha S. Rajan is a STEAM educator, musician, author and early childhood educator working out of Chicago.  She resides with her husband, children, and various critters.    Watching the native wildlife in her yard is one of the things she most enjoys doing.   Did you know she is also a classically trained opera singer and plays the mridangam (a drum from South India), the piano, banjo, ukulele, djembe, bongos, recorder, and a lot of other instruments.

The Book

Animals, birds and insects move and dance naturally to communicate with one another. Some for food, some to mate, some to exercise. In this interactive book, children will learn about the animals around them and be invited to get up and dance like the animals!

Digging Deeper

LOVE!   Just love the illustrations provided by Hannah Abbo.   The bright colours, and the accurate depictions of the different animals is just wonderful.   Can’t you just picture the beauty of a peacock as it struts across the forest floor?

The font is easy to read with good variation in size.  Each of the 7 animals gets about four pages.  Two for description and two for the dance.

At the close of this read you’ll find author notes telling more about the different animals, and giving suggestions on use in a classroom.

My Recommendation

Dance, Dance, Dance!   Animals move in so many different ways, and we can choose to see it all as a dance.  Be inspired to dance like the animals around us.   How much fun would it be to have a group of  kindergarten to grade three dancing around in your backyard or on a gym floor?

This would be an excellent book to add to an animal study in a homeschool co-op or in an elementary class room.  An excellent way to get children up and moving as they think about the animals they just learned about.   I even learned a new word!  I thought antelope “pronk” when they jump.  Another word for the same action is “Stot!”.   Learning new words… EXCELLENT!  🙂

How to catch a daddysaurus

About the Author and Book

The Author

Alice Walstead has a goal of helping children smile when they read books. She writes children’s books.

AND…. she has succeeded with her second How to Catch book.

The Book

The How to Catch Kids are at it again! This time, they’re out to trap the Daddysaurus – a mystical creature capable of such amazing acts of kindness, bravery, brilliance and humor.  However will they catch him?   Perhaps they can use his favorite activities?   This dinosaur picture book is filled with silly rhymes and illustrations sure to delight young readers and educators alike with STEAM concepts and classic hilarity and chaos.

Digging Deeper

Rhyming verse helps us dance from page to page following children seeking to catch their local daddysaurus.  Will they be successful?

Follow their progress as we observe the wonderful things that a daddysaurus does.  Watch the delight of the children as they problem-solve ways to meet their objective.  The only question is what trap is the best one to use on a DADDYSAURUS?????

Bright, clear images help tell the story.

Bright and clear illustrations help to tell the story, clearly delineating the many attributes of a good Daddysaurus.  Should they use all the tricks they know?   Perhaps they might need help!

My Thoughts

This was actually a hard review to write!   How does one tell you about a book that made me smile without telling the whole story?

You will find How to Catch a Daddysaurus to be a fun read with children loving up on their dad calling him a daddysaurus and extolling his virtues.

Your dinosaur loving child will delight in reading this story with their own Daddysaurus.  Can you imagine the chuckles and laughter as they work together with the children in the story to make the capture.
