The Flip Side of Giving

When I took a moment today to consider the word give, all I could think about was if you give something, you deny something else.  There’s always a flip side to giving.  Made me wonder, is it the flip side that stops people from giving freely?

The Flip Side of Giving

 Charity, Charity
Give to my charity!
Comes the call again & again.
Sometimes I shudder thinking:
If I give twenty to you.
Then I need to give twenty to the next guy.
And then where is my bread for the week?
Charity, Charity
Give to my charity!
Comes the call once again.
Sometimes I hesitate thinking:
But if I give it to you
Then what happens if I need it?
Then it’s gone!
Charity, Charity
Give to my charity!
Comes the call at my door
Sometimes I don’t to answer thinking: 
Again?  You come again?
Don’t you know I’m having supper with the family? 
Should I encourage these interruptions? 

Charity, Charity
Give to my charity!
Comes the call on the line

Sometimes I temporize in my thinking: 

I don’t know you,
How did you get this number?
Can I trust them?
Charity, Charity
Give to my charity!
Comes the call
In all the hesitation, 
this refrains beats in my soul:
Be generous in in your giving.
Don’t be stingy.
Those who trust God want for nothing.
Give from a willing heart.
Trust God, he’ll meet your needs.
And I am chastened.

Today I was Brave

Guess what… today I was brave.
And the whole time…

I was quaking in my shoes!


I shared a poem of mine with a lady at the foodbank.
See, we’d just been talking about the writers’ conference that I had been too, and she wanted to know why I’d been and if I was writing a book.  

I said “I write poetry”.  
The answer was OH?
Tell me something you wrote
Won’t you my dear?
I pulled out a quick one
My phone so handy you know?
Opened up the browser and picked
One called Grow.
She said “Oh, I like this, 
Can I see another?
So I bravely, yet quaking within
Pulled out Listen, Listen my Child
She fell in love, reading it again
Saying, send this to me
Here’s the email, I want to show this to others.
Share will you please?
My heart about bursting
I did as she asked.
I mentioned I hoped to publish someday
A book with poems and pictures to colour.
I think that’s a great idea
Words spoken to my heart.
So perhaps one day
More brave I will be.

Share, it’s a thing to learn

What does it mean to share?  

It’s odd how some things stick with you for years.  I remember when my lad was a wee youngster and we were trying to be part of a play group and they had this rule that if a child was playing with something, and another child wanted it we needed to teach them to share, so child one would have to give up the toy so that other child could have it.  This rule was enforced and it bothered me mightily at the time, and I guess it still does.  All those toys my lad was forced to give up…for another child’s selfishness…I WANT DAT!  and so my lad would kindly give it up…  seemed so dreadfully unfair.

I suppose it’s a hard balance … to teach sharing without encouraging selfishness. We didn’t last in that play group as the balance just wasn’t there.


Share
It’s a hard thing to balance
to share and not demand.
To teach our children 
the give and take
that so many need to learn.
To take
 demands that we also give.
Our time,
Our attention,
From whom we would take.
 Just as to give
demands that we also give
Our time
Our attention
to whom we would impart.
To see the need.
to know the demand
to make the judgement call
on whose need is greater.
That of the askee
or that of the giver.

Whose need do we see 
as more worthy?
It’s a hard one to teach.
It’s a hard one to learn.
But that’s what it means
to 
SHARE.
Those who are kind benefit themselves

This Garden Grows

but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ 
 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching
and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
 we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ

This Garden Grows
Little by Little
this garden grows.
The plants they come up
row by row.
Sunlight and Dirt
Nutrients and Water
and just a wee bit of chatter
All that they need for growth to occur.
Little by Little
this garden grows.
The lad is maturing 
before my eyes.
 Grace and Wisdom
Food and Drink
and just a wee bit of chatter
All that he needs for growth to occur.
It’s happening
Right before my eyes.
It’s amazing to watch
him grow.

I Read

Today’s word prompt is read, bringing to mind one of my favourite activities of the day.  Reading with my lad.  Our current read is called “out of time”, a marvellous fiction book that has my lad daily clamouring “read more, read more”.

I read to my lad
everyday
As we eat our breakfast
and plan our day.
Tales of history
of days gone by
Knights, and maidens
Treasures that lie.
Tales of geography
What places we’d go
Switzerland, Scotland
Australia down low.
Tales of science
the animals we’ve seen
Genetics, Robotics, 
That frog is not green!
Tales that are made up
our imaginations soar
Our breakfast is simple, 
those tales, do not bore.

A Pondering on the Word Remain

I do a hymn study on Sundays, I have to admit, the word remain is proving to be elusive   You don’t find many, if any, hymns with the word remain in them.   I did find a scripture song that had the word remains in it, but it’s so new the copying the lyrics here could be problematic.  So nix that idea eh?


I got to thinking, why do I post about hymns?  It’s like, what’s the point?  There are times I wonder about not posting them, but then I think about the stories of faith that I would miss, the stories of people who have gone on before, jotting down their thoughts about the Lord, and how we can praise, honour, and adore him.  How we learn more about God in the words that we sing.

I want the history to remain with us.  To not be forgotten.  
It’s important to learn from those who have gone on before, you know?

Doing a hymn study, is the keeping on on the faith.
It’s a way to persevere our history.
A way to build lasting bridges.
Some hymns have endured the test of time.
Other hymns being not, not abiding.

Admittedly, there is a side benefit to me doing a hymn study weekly,
It’s gives me a song of praise that runs through my head most of the week.
Calling me back to God when I feel pushed about my life.
It’s a way God gives me to survive the hustle of life.

So what do you say?
Shall I persist with the sharing of the hymns of faith?
To continue my delving into history?
The musical history of the church?

I think I shall.  
It’s a joy bringer to my soul.
And that’s worth something don’t you think?

Try it, Just try it

You know one of the things I really love?   When my lad grabs hold of an idea, even a half formed idea, and simply runs with it.   It’s just fascinating to sit back and watch him.  His willingness to try new ideas has just exploded over the past year and I so often sit back amazed at where it’s taking him.

Some ideas he’s been running with lately.

Robotics.  He’s taking a class on robotics through the co-op and the marker robot he wasn’t real keen on and didn’t work the way he wanted, so he thought he’d rework it.

He also managed to move some of his ants into a formicarium that he built. He’s ever so pleased that they seem to be moving in well.  They still visit the testtube, but .. they are starting to make a home in the ant home.. eating honey and everything!

And did you know this?
He’s making pets of bugs!   He’s got this stink bug and a leaf footed bug that he’s caring for.  The Stink bug eats tomatoes out of his hand, the other hasn’t quite developed that trust factor yet.   Pictured below is The stink bug’s accommodations.

For his atoms study, he did a thing with an egg and toothpaste and vinegar.  He was widely impressed with the results and played around with the rubbery result.  I have to admit, it did feel rather neat!  Half hard, half rubbery.  He checked it daily until one day it split as he picked it up! 

“MOM!  It took off the marker!  Why would it take off my happy and sad faces?  Do you think the vinegar did that or the toothpaste?”  (bet you have an idea where that line of questions went eh?)    🙂

The sheer amount of videos this lad watches, and then shares all this learning with us. It is amazing!  He knows so much!   We were talking about that a bit this morning, and he talked about how one video can lead to another, which leads to subscriptions to new channels, and lately he’s been fascinated by genetic engineering…and BOY oh BOY the chatter and learning…. He actually did that for his innovators study today…researching genetic engineers. 

Built a tower of books too!   This was the second build and didn’t get as high as his first, the challenge was this: build a tower using 24 inches of masking tape and one sheet of paper.  I was surprised at how many books he was able to stack!  Rather neat if I must say so myself.

Anyways, you’ll be amazed at what happens if you only try eh?
