The Callers

Oh my, but I did enjoy The Callers by Kiah Thomas.  A look into an odd magical system, sharing, mystery, and heroes!  If you have a love of fantasy, this delightfully crafted book introduces us to the worlds of Elipsom and Evantra.  

What am I reviewing?

Kiah Thomas has put together a 228 page hardcover book called The Callers.  A fantastic read with believable characters and twenty-two chapters.   You’ll find intrigue, theft, environmentalism, family helpfulness, and friendship.  Corporate greed vs the little guy.  How will it all work out? 

Looking Deeper

This sweet story carries a bit of a bite.   Quin, the youngest member, of a strong calling family.  He’s up to claim his birthright…but things aren’t working right.  Why?  That’s the starting question in The Callers. 

Through excellent character development and gradual world building we learn why Quin is struggling.  Not only that, we learn of a well-kept secret and danger looming for two societies. 

Youth 10 and up will be delighted with this adventure story.  You’ll find the characters experiencing a whole range of emotions from sadness to wonder.   You’ll find determination and capitulation. People choose different paths for a variety of reasons.  Would be a good discussion point hmm?   I see much potential in this read for helping children with critical thinking skills.  🙂 

You’ll find little in the way of ornamentation.   The only differences in the text above are occasional heavier, darker font when Quin is working on his homework, and the dark, starlit illustrations around each chapter heading. 

Should The Callers be in your shelf?

If you have a love of fantasy, The Callers by Kiah Thomas is a wonderful read.  There is mystery, an interesting type of magic, conflict, and adventure.  A well-written story with excellent timing and characters which are quite believable.  There were a couple of tense moments but nothing alarming at all (at least to this adult reader).  🙂  Surprises happen too so be prepared!

I love how to author incorporated the question of “can something come from nothing?”  It would seem like an obvious answer, but is it? The governing system of Elipsom however, shows the answer is perhaps not as easy as you think.
