Last week I took some time to talk about thebest books for Middle School that I checked out over the past year. This week I thought it would be fun to look at my top 10 picture books of 2021. There are so many good picture books it’s hard to actually choose the ones I thought were the best. If you’ve been following the blog, we’ll have to see if you agree with my choices. 🙂

what can you do with a rock? I really liked this book. Partly because it brings back good memories of skipping rocks with my lad, and the copious rock collections we had. And partly because of how it connected the learning the story of a rock with hearing the stories of people.
The Song for Everyone. This book still makes me smile thinking about the joy I had reading and reviewing it. Such a sweet book about community connection.
The RunAway Shirt. This book is SO MUCH FUN. The fun of a mom and her boy doing a household chore together. I love the togetherness.
Inside Cat. I love the cleverness of this book. How the cat moves around the house seeing so much, doing so much, always being a cat. And in being that cat, teaching so many concepts to youngsters. Well done.
Shy Willow had to step so far out of her comfort zone to help someone else. A sweet book to read with good talking points for children.
The Next Five
It is admittedly much harder picking these five.
Little Fox and the wild imagination. Dad and boy, having some much fun working with their wild imaginations. Where will it end up taking them? 🙂
Marie’s Ocean. I love wordy picture books that teach you something. This story was the wordiest I received this year and I thought it was well done. So good to learn much and still have good pictures to go with it. 🙂
Snow Friends. A boy and his dog, a winter day, and meeting new friends. Just a solidly good story.
Beaver and Otter Get along…sort of. Learning about relationships with neighbours, and eco systems. A well written picture book for younsters. Great colours throughout.
Bear Island … this was a hard choice over my runner ups. It’s hard picking a book that focusing on dealing with loss. It’s not an easy subject, yet I think the author did a good job.
Honourable Mention
The Wanderer. I love wordless books because you can do so much with them. You can tell your own story, use a page as a jumping point for just talking with children, or have children tell their own stories. They are fun.
We want a dog. A great picture book for helping kids and their families think through what they want in a dog.
The secret life of viruses. With the impact of COVID I thought this was timely and decently written.
