When Peace Like a River… I’ve sung this song for a very long time it seems. I sung it in a choir so I know the parts well. 🙂 I learned the story behind this hymn a while ago but haven’t shared it here.
The author, Horatio G. Spafford, was a successful young lawyer and a devout Christian. He owned several properties and served in his church. The Great Chicago Fire wiped out his financial resources. Overnight he lost all his fortune, and then shortly thereafter his son died. He planned a vacation for his wife and four daughters, and planned a trip to Europe. They planned to go on the S.S. Ville du Havre but he was unable to travel with his family. They left, he stayed behing, the boat sunk. Only his wife was saved. Can you imagine the devastation? Travelling to join his wife, he penned this song. Visit here for more details.

When I was looking for videos to share with you I found this one which has a couple of different verses, but I love the SOUND of this group. Don’t they praise the Lord nicely with their voices?
Lyrics
It Is Well with My Soul
When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul
Chorus: It is well (it is well)
With my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul
And Lord haste the day, when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.
I also found this one by Joni Eareckson Tada, it’s like it jumped out at me. Bringing back memories for me of yesterday year… reading her books, listening to her speak etc. Long time ago that was. 🙂
