Who wrote is a bit of a mystery, there is no definitive answer. It is known to be an traditional American folk though.

Ah, to remember what Christ did for us eh? It’s definitely a reason to sing. I was mentioning on a fellow FMF writers blog today that I find it easier to sing a pray than to say a prayer. This song just reminds me of that truism.
