The Pattern of Insanity

January 13, 2024 By Annette1 11 Comments

It took a bit of thinking while I was at work today to come up with a title for this five minute Friday word prompt.   The Pattern of Insanity, with pattern being the word prompt.   I suppose most of this poem will be in response to what feels to me the insanity of this current time we live in.  I’m feeling a bit tired of the over sensitivities of people and how often they just want things stopped as opposed to working harder to solve the issue.

the pattern of insanity

The Pattern of Insanity

Sometimes talking to people
is a bit of a challenge
the over-sensitivity means
that everyone gets so offended
over the smallest of things
and so sometimes it seems that
the world is going just a touch bit insane.

How can it be that
just because you can’t do something
that it means you need to be
disappointed that you can’t
participate in a voluntary challenge?
And you are so unhappy about
your perceived lack of inclusivity that
you call for it to be not allowed.

This without doing the work to
see if there is a way that you could
make the challenge work for you!
So in essence, giving up before giving yourself
a chance.
And then of course, there are those
that will defend their actions,
likening it to active discrimination
against another body of people.

And so I wonder,
where does the insanity end?

The pattern of insanity is seen

Yet, I have to admit,
as I gave this word Pattern
another thought, particularly since
I combined it with the word insanity.

It’s a bit of a pattern of insanity
I sometimes see in myself.
Sometimes I shoot myself in the foot
before I give myself a chance to
take a step forward.
I find someway to discourage
myself from even trying.

So I guess the insanity I see in
others, I can see in myself too.
The solution is recognizing it right?
And sometimes I can do that for
myself and other times it
takes a loved one, or occasionally
a disgruntled stranger to offer a
boot in the pants to get me out of my rut.

So how do we help this insanity stop
in the lives of the “but you can’t do this
because I can’t take part!” people?
The people who are just making it hard
for others to want to do anything that
would be a fun challenge
for a whole host of other people.

How do we support that challenge givers,
and challenge the “whiners/nay-sayers”
to work harder to find a good solution?
Or perhaps to ask better questions, such as,
how can I be supported in this challenge?
Can anyone help me problem solve instead of the
cry to shut it all down?
How we help people recognize that they
are shutting themselves down
before they even try?

I don’t really know,
but somehow we need to
keep trying yes?

God Speaks

Matthew 7:1-5

“Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

Luke 6:36-37

37 “Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

Ephesians 4:11-16

11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Stored Up Treasure

December 18, 2023 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

So I’m sitting here very early on a Monday morning pondering the word store.  It’s our Five minute Friday word of the week and I’ve been too tired to consider it all weekend.   I missed it last week and may at some point right a post for the word turn.  But today, today let’s ponder the word Store.   I got to thinking about a sermon yesterday and how within the pages of the bible there is stored up treasure.  Sometimes we need help to find that treasure you know?

Why am I up so early?  I have work today and a lad who stayed up most of the night.  Studying, preparing, doing the whole school thing, and realizing too late that his mom is a light sleeper. The bag under my eyes have grown rather large.  I asked him this morning to do some problem solving into how he can stay up if he needs to, and yet allow me to get the rest I need because this situation isn’t tenable.

Stored Up Treasure

Stored up treasure

Yesterday’s sermon in church was on
2 Corinthians 4:1-6. Pastor spoke on how
God is the light and the
‘god of this age’ is a master manipulator
and closes off the eyes of the mind.

When he does so, people can’t see truth,
they can’t see the glory of God that
is in everything surrounding them, hence
they truly live in darkness.
a darkness built on deception.

And yet God
God is the light
the very glory we see about us
in the smallest of things, and
in the biggest of things.

So Paul when he preached to the people
wasn’t worried about if his message
would reach people.
He knew that God could reach into
the darkest of souls (after all,
God completely changed Paul’s life)
so he did what he was supposed to do.
He preached Christ and him crucified.
He preached God and his gloriousness.

A heart comforted

And so I sat there in silence
munching on my mix I bring to help me
keep focused.
and my mother’s heart was comforted.
I so want my boy to see the truth of
who God is. To worry constantly for his
eternal future no longer.
But God took Paul.
And man who sincerely thought he was right
a brilliant man (by my reckoning at least)
and completely turned him around.

So like Paul, I need to worry less.
Fussing will get me no where but resentful
of God for not hurrying things along.
I just need to do my part.
Read books to help him think.
Postulate questions that even if he shuts
me down might sit in his brain a bit.
and pray, to pray fervently, through scripture,
through the prayers of the faithful, and through
a mom’s observations into the life of her young man.

And perhaps, just perhaps if I do that.
My internal fretting will ease, and
perhaps my son might have that light of God start
to seep back into his life, just a bit more.

So when they talk about the
stored up treasure in the bible,
sometimes you just need a person of God
to remind you of the light that God is.
and that light, always, always dispels darkness
and deception can’t hide forever.
Deception doesn’t win.

And God would speak

2 Corinthians 4:1-6

Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. 2 But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Many Definitions of Left

December 2, 2023 By Annette1 10 Comments

Oh, what can I do with the word left?   So many options of which way this simple four letter word can go.   As I’ve stopped to ponder the many definitions of left my heart sees hope, and possibility, while at the same time seeing loss.   It’s hard sometimes to see the hope we have as believers and yet grieve the loss of what that hope means.  Such a convoluted life sometimes…..

The many definitions of left

Many definitions of Left

One left today, one of a group
of three available. He left to join
a young couple in their home in the big city.
I mentioned to my hubby how I find it
interesting that when Asian who truly speak
their home tongue, when pick up one of my
bunnies, they intensely examine the face of
the bunny. Whereas folks of other cultures
or backgrounds tend to look at colour, or type.

My dad was left-handed
and told me stories of how
that was treated when he was a child
and it bothered me greatly.
Why punish a boy for having a different
hand dominant from yours?
My hubby is left-handed as well which
creates little differences in being other
than seating issues at functions.
For a while I thought my boy might be left-handed
from how he handled himself as a child, but
he is not, yet he’s a thinker like his dad.
I know that I play chess better if I play
left-handed, though indeed I am a righty?
So what does that say?

Are you from the far left?
This question was raised by a person giving
a run down on why they won’t hire someone who
puts their pronouns on their resume. Her assumptions
are they they are from the far left, and
as such they will be problem makers and
cause too much strife within the workplace,
due to a poor work ethic and making everything
about them, ergo they are unhireable.

Any other definitions?

“Let’s go left today”, I said,
as hubby and I were returning home
from a service he preached at.
“Let’s see where this road takes us.
You think we’ll still get home okay?”
Hubby turned left and said “not like
we’re in any hurry are we? We can do
the scenic route.”
Sometimes it’s nice to randomly
take a left or a right and just spend
confined time with each other.

I was reminded the other day listening
to a sermon that we have a hope for the future,
that those who believe in God are part of
his glorious inheritance. We won’t be
left behind when the heaven and the earth
are made new again.
But then my heart grieves for those who have
been fooled by the wiles of the devil.
Those who think “I can call myself Christian,
while not fully believing in God”. Or those who
have bought the devil’s lies of evolution, bad things
happening to good people, and that the bible
itself isn’t honest.
They will be left behind, and my heart weeps
for their loss.

God speaks

Isaiah 66:22-23

“For as the new heavens and the new earth
    that I make
shall remain before me, says the Lord,
so shall your offspring and your name remain.
23 From new moon to new moon,
    and from Sabbath to Sabbath,
all flesh shall come to worship before me,
declares the Lord.

2 Peter 3:8-10

8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

Acts 2:42-47

November 30, 2023 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Acts 2:42-47 is my next section in Acts to ponder over.   If you are interested in the rest of the series you will find them here eh?

  • Acts 1:1-5
  • Acts 1:6-11
  • Acts 1:12-26
  • Acts 2:1-13
  • Acts 2:14-41

In the previous passage in Acts 2 we know that 3000 people turned their hearts to God as a result of Peter’s words.   What happened next is what we’ll discover today.

Acts 2:42-47 reads as follows

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Acts 2:42-47

Looking into Acts 2:42-47

Verse 42

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Those 3000 new believers, they didn’t sit around going, oh, we have a relationship with the Lord and let that be it.  No way.  What they did was

  • devote themselves to the apostles teaching
  • to fellowship with each other
  • to the breaking of bread
  • and prayers.

Verse 43

43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.

So this is what I’m envisioning.  Peter finishes talking, and there’s this huge crowd around him of new believers.  People turning to the Lord everywhere he turns.   But these people are on fire for the Lord so they eat together, spend time with each other, praying for each other.  This becomes more than a one day event.  And as it goes on, people are filled with awe… seeing all that God has done and is doing through the apostles.

Makes me ask this question: why don’t people sit in awe of what God is doing through his people now? What are we doing differently?

Verse 44

44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common.

Is it the lack of commonality we have with each other?  All these divisions within/between churches and there, what should be, spirit-filled, godly people?    Can you imagine being part of a community that shares freely with other and happily spent time with each other?

Verse 45

45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.

I admittedly struggle with this one.  Mind the older I get the easier I am about giving things away that I no longer need or want to others.  But I struggle with the thought of selling things in order to help those in need.   Like I’ll give my money and time, but selling stuff I need?  Or just selling stuff and using all the proceeds for missions and stuff?   GAH as I write that I feel like a jerk….. like seriously.

But at the same time it’s true though.  I’ll happily give my tithe, and use those dollars to help others.  But when it comes to going beyond that, I find it difficult.   Like even taking the time to cook a meal for a young family, or individuals who have lost a loved one, and stuff like that.  If it inconveniences me, then I tend to avoid it.  These folks, filled with the Spirit, no less than ANY believer today, chose to freely help each other in whatever why they could.

What does that say about me?

Verse 46

46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Day by day…. adding to their numbers, this generous group of faithful, new believers.  Changing the world around them by their love for each other, their devotion to the Lord, and how they received food.

So does my gratitude show who God is? Will it encourage people to see God favourably?   And perhaps heed a call on their lives they didn’t even know enough to recognize?

What are your thoughts?

In ABCs of the World’s Religions, kids travel around the world and across the centuries exploring the beauty of the world’s major faith traditions.  Learn along with kids as you explore sacred spaces, holydays, and rituals in several different religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

ABC's of the World's Religions

Digging Deeper into the ABC’s of the World’s Religions

Author Garlock does not always take the time to define terms that she uses.  If I were reading this page to a child, I would first look up what Muslimah means (It means Muslim woman).  I did not immediately make that connection particularly since the illustrations show men and women with head coverings.

Each two-page spread features

  • rhyming couplets on the left side
  • further explanation on the right side, often comparing religions to each other
  • Appropriate for any home, faith-based or not
  • Non-devotional in nature, making them suitable for the classroom

Within the pages you will find beautiful artwork which serve to highlight the topic of each letter.  You’ll find the artwork vibrant and provides lots of talking points with children.   I love how the artist includes the letter into the illustrations.

My Thoughts

I have to admit that I kinda struggle with the ABC’s of the World’s Religions.  I like that children are taught about the various world’s religions because it’s good to know what others think.  It’s good to draw people together instead of separating them, finding commonality in belief builds bridges.

Initially I was not happy with this tome because it wasn’t what I expected. I expected a book that would say A is for Animism B is buddhist etc and Just basically give a summary of different religions of the world.  Whereas what I received was a book that seems to compare religions, and this is what I think makes me uncomfortable with it as a children’s book.

I think I am concerned about the confusion comparing religions can  introduce to children.   Using this book as a primer to help 14 year olds think about their faith, or in a Christian setting helping them see the superiority of the Christian faith.  I just hesitate to yes, this is a book to read with the under 12 year old crowd.  It may be an abundance of caution on my part, but confusing little ones… shouldn’t we have an abundance of caution about doing?

So it’s indeed a mixed reaction.   The building of bridges, the helping teens to discuss world religions and hopefully define their faith better against the potential to confuse young minds.  It’s a tough call.

What results?

November 17, 2023 By Annette1 7 Comments

Even though I can’t get Kate’s post to load for me today, I thought I’d still get my Five minute Friday post done.  It’s late at night and I kinda feel like this prompt took me in different directions, but I’m okay with that (I think!).  🙂  What Results are you looking for life?   Have you made any inroads on goals you have?

What results

What Results?

What results are you looking for?
Is there an ending you foresee?
Is what you envision in your
foreseeable future or something that
you should work for?

today I listened to a man
explaining a work contract
to his kidlet. Explaining how they
don’t own their job, their employer does.
All they own is their skillset and the
ability to find someone to who says
your skillset fits this opening I have
which helps my business thrive.
When the two meet successfully, the result can be
seen with a paycheck and a thriving business.

This summer I got something I’ve been
aiming to create for several years.
A chocolate tricolour holland lop.
She’s now grown up some and
SHE STAYED SMALL!!!
and is even sorta typey!
My heart smiles!
Now all I have to do is get her to
hopefully replicate herself.

I’ve been slowly working through
the book of Acts as it’s been a
prompting. My goal was to read through
a section every week, but busyness has
somewhat interfered with that goal, so my result
is not what I wish.
Yet I wonder if… perhaps, perhaps my
end goal needs to be examined.
I do need to consider why my immediate results
aren’t as I desire, but perhaps God
would have me just read and learn
even if it takes some time?
and perhaps part of the process is learning
why so often I slough God to the side
when life gets complicated.

God wants more you know?
He wants that centralized love.
A love that is focused on him as our creator,
saviour, friend, beloved, and more.
He wants us to be as he sees us.
We are to be holy, pure, righteous,
and beloved of God.
How are we to be what he wants us to
be if we don’t take the time to
truly understand what that is in the
book he’s given us?
A book that is guide to who God is and
how we wants us to be.

So what results do you need to
focus on?

Acts 2:14-41

November 16, 2023 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

I am trying to decide if I should break up Acts 2:14-41 into smaller sections as it is a very long piece.  The fact that half of it is poetic seems to beg me to not do that.  But it just seems like a very long piece to work through in the course of one week.  In the ESV bible that I am using this section is entitled “Peter’s Sermon at Pentecost” which also begs me to leave it as one section.   I guess time will tell eh?  🙂

I must apologize.  Through busyness with other things, the start of life group, and not making this a priority in my life, my progress stalled for a bit.

In the meantime this section reads as such:

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 even on my male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
20 the sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood,
before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

And the passage continues….

22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him,

“‘I saw the Lord always before me,
for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;
my flesh also will dwell in hope.
27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,
or let your Holy One see corruption.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’

29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
35 until I make your enemies your footstool.”’

36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”

37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

Acts 2:14-42

My Initial Thoughts

We left last week with some people expressing skepticism at what was occurring with the apostles.  So Peter speaks up, giving explanation for what is going on.  They aren’t drunk!  He tend used the scriptures they were well familiar with to explain what was going on.  He also went on to speak about who Christ was, and again, used scripture to prove his points.

A combination of busyness, the length of the passage feeling daunting,  and not putting this first in my life has led to a delay in posting this.  🙂

Verses 14-21

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions,
    and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 even on my male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
    blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
20 the sun shall be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood,
before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

So Peter took the leadership role, standing with the eleven and speaking out.  He boldly addressed the scoffers saying listen up! The apostles were not drunkards (after all it was only the third hour of the day).  And rather gives them the words of Joel to heed.

See these words from Joel 2

“And it shall come to pass afterward,
    that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions.
29 Even on the male and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit.

30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

There are some differences, but overall they are the same.

The prophetic

I have to admit to feeling a bit uncomfortable with this passage.  Paul brings the past directly into the future saying these things will still happen.  Young women and men prophesying, older men having dreams and young men seeing visions.  It’s like… what do I DO with this?

I know from reading that sometimes Arab people come to faith because God talks to them and gives them visions and dreams.  He shows them who he is in ways they can’t deny.  Is that part of this? Is that part of how the Spirit moves in people?

I struggled in a church I previously attended when people claimed they had a prophetic vision and it just didn’t make sense to me when honestly it’s just God being God calling his people to faith and repentance and action.   Does it take a dream to be prophetic to know that’s God’s call upon our lives? It’s just plain scriptural!  So these words make me wonder if there is something I’m missing.

Physical Signs

The whole smoke, fire, clouds and natural wonders….. that to me is more tangible than prophetic words and easier to grasp. I can see God so clearly in nature and that things that happen around us. Through nature and the unexplained actions of people I can see God at work and his saving power upon us. It’s like it calls to my very soul.

But the whole prophetic… I don’t get it.  I just don’t know and I don’t really know where to go with it from here.

verses 22-28

22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him,

“‘I saw the Lord always before me,
    for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;
my flesh also will dwell in hope.
27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,
or let your Holy One see corruption.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’

Peter speaks to who Jesus is.  A man that God provided clear evidence of was raised up by him.  How did God provide clear evidence of who Jesus was?

  • mighty works
  • wonders
  • signs

God does all these things!

All these things God did through Christ.  And this Jesus who them crucified and killed.  GOD raised him up.  God loosed the hold that death had on him. BECAUSE… get this…. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. Jesus could NOT be held by death. This is the Jesus that David testified to.

So now we have hope we can dwell in, and live with glad hearts, and are able to speak with joy. You need to think about what the means deep down.  Jesus couldn’t be contained by death and so was raised up.   God did this for us. And now we have a way of living that no one truly had before.  Can you imagine the difference hope has on a person?

Verses 29-35

Peter keeps reminding their listeners what God did and what they KNOW God did. They know that David was a prophet.  David died, and was buried and is STILL buried.  BUT HE talked about Jesus and how he wouldn’t be left in the grave.

I love how Peter walks his audience through their own history and promised future. King David was much beloved and well-known so his words would be heeded. David knew that one of his offspring would sit on the throne and that his descendent would be greater than he was.  He also foreknew that Jesus would not be stuck in the ground. He would sit on the right hand of God!

Verses 36-42

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Paul’s words were convicting.

Jesus was crucified and buried, by the very people listening to him. Jesus their Lord and Messiah.

Wanting to know what to do about this feeling of conviction, the listeners turned to Peter with questions of “Brothers, what shall we do?“

Peter doesn’t leave them hanging.  He tells them plainly what they are to do.  “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

Do you see it?   This promise wasn’t just for the believers of the day, but for future generations as well.  Repentance and baptism, it’s what we are told to do.  But not just any type of baptism, but one done in the name of Jesus Christ for forgiveness.   Do this: receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Peter continued to talk with them, pleading with them, warning them.  The end result was 3000 people coming to faith.  Can you imagine it?

You see I have this picture in my mind of the disciples suddenly speaking in tongues and a crowd of about one to two hundred is gathered round.  But 3000!?!?!?   Where did these 3000 come from?  How did Peter get them all to hear him?  This folks, this is God at work!

Thoughts raised for me

What does it mean to me that because of what God did, I can dwell in hope, have a glad heart and a tongue that rejoices?   Does it truly change anything in my life?  (at least in a tangible way that others can see?).   Do I truly understand what God did in providing his people hope?

How do I explain the 3000 people being able to hear what Peter said amidst the noise and confusion of that day?  The apostles speaking in tongues, folks questioning why, and yet 3000 souls turned to the Lord.   3000 people who originally scoffed, or questioned what was going on, and Peter used scripture and the Lord’s prompting to let them be convicted and change the course of their life.   God can just make it happen you know?  City streets and homes are not the same as hilltops that can be natural amphitheaters (like when Jesus taught 1000’s on the hilltops).  People heard and lives where changed.   Do I let my life be changed by what God teaches and shows me?
