Books for Children

Marie’s Ocean

February 27, 2021 By Annette1 4 Comments

raincoast FTC

You know what I love?  Well okay, one of the things I love?   Picture books that have meat to them.  These are books that not only entertain a child, but also teach.  Marie’s Ocean introduces us to the life and work of Marie Tharp.  Don’t know who she is?  A remarkable woman you lived in a time when what women could do work-wise was limited, and yet, she forever left her mark in history.   This is my review for Raincoast books.

Affiliate links will be used.

marie's ocean

Who is Marie Tharp

In Marie’s Ocean we get to know about Marie Tharp, a girl who was fascinated by the world from the time she was quite young.  She was determined that one day she would sail on a ship.  One obstacle – she lived in a time when women were not welcome aboard a working ship.  They were considered bad luck… it took years before she was able to work on a ship, but in the meantime, she studied and worked.  Eventually, she proved there was a rift, and through that, the theory of continental drift.

What do you get?

I received an ARC version of Marie’s Ocean for this review.  You’ll find it comes as a hardcover picturebook of 68 pages.   Published by Henry Holt and Company Books for Young Readers, and written by Josie James.    After reading this woman’s biography I find myself wondering if Ms. James will tackle any other women of history.

Written with children 5-9 years old, I can easily see older students using this well-illustrated picture book was a primer for a study of Marie Tharp.

The finer details for Marie’s Ocean

Josie James is both author and illustrator.    I enjoyed learning how sounding works and seeing the paths the ships took.  It was excellent to learn her work progressed as she worked through her studies.

This mixed-format picture book is detailed in both illustration and word.  We are privy to her thoughts and explorations, an excellent primer into the life she lived so well.

I found the variety in which the material was presented an integral part of the story.  Seeing her bravery in standing up for her findings, her dismay that she couldn’t present her own work, observing her discoveries, and the pictures of what it all means.

Marie's Ocean, sample page

At the close of the book we’re given the rest of Marie’s story and how for so long she and her work forgotten. She is now known as one of the four greatest woman cartographers.

Should you Get Marie’s Ocean?

If you have any interest in oceanography, geography, science, noted women of history, numerology, or more….you can find much of interest in Marie’s Ocean.  This meaty picturebook is a great introduction to all those fields.  Teaching children what you can do as a woman if you are good with numbers, or are determined to follow your dream, or just want to follow where your research takes you.

Marie was so patient and yet observant, willing to speak her observations and prove them.  There is so much you can do with it, the biggest of course is… just enjoying the story!  So go out, get a new book for your shelves.  🙂

Natalie Portman’s Fables

February 13, 2021 By Annette1 2 Comments

raincoast FTC

I love fables.  They give a good story while teaching good life lessons.   Natalie Portman has taken three well-known fables and has rewritten them to add a respect the earth message as well.  Natalie Portman’s Fables retell the stories of three popular stories. Come, let’s learn more in this review.   Affiliate links will be used.

Natalie Portman's Fables

What you Get

Feiwel and Friends, an imprint of Macmillan, has published this 64 page, hardcover tome I am reviewing for Raincoast books.   It has been delightfully illustrated by Janna Mattia.

The three stories brought forth for retelling are

  • The Tortoise and the Hare
  • The Three Little Pigs
  • Country Mouse and City Mouse

Natalie Portman stays true to the story, but just adds the odd twist using a rhyming meter that is easy to read.   The intended audience is children 4-6 years old.

Natalie Portman’s Fables, the details

Natalie Portman's Fables

I LOVE the illustrations.  They do so much to help tell the story.  You can sense the fear, see slyness, joy, sadness and happiness, observe the horrors of pollution, and just enjoy a well-illustrated book.

The fables are written in rhyming couplets making it fairly easy to read.  Not all words were necessarily easy to pronounce, so I would suggest if you are reading with a group of children to give the book a good read-aloud first.   🙂

The font size I think is better for sitting down with a child to read, or giving to a first or second grader to read themselves.

I enjoyed the use of words I don’t normally see in a book intended for a young audience like thrum, meekness, braggart, squatter and pioneering.   I love introducing new words to children and having talking points in books is a most excellent thing.

You’ll find lots of colour through, with ample use of white space when able.   Overall a well done book.

Should you get it?

I don’t know.  The illlustrations and rhyming couplets make Natatlie Portman’s Fables an easy read, and I like how the author takes the known to add an element of newness. At times it felt too “sweet” for my tastes.  The danger was taken out of The Three Little Pigs story, which made it feel like it was kinda missing some of the point.   So it’s a bit of a mixed bag, which is part of the danger in retelling the story.   It’s good to use the old to help teach the new, but you need to be careful not to lose too much of the old as you do it.  🙂

I got to thinking about this and thought huh, this might be an interesting concept to use with middle or high school students.  Teach about how to help the planet, then read these stories and issue a challenge to your students.  The challenge: how they might change a children’s story to include a” help the earth component”.  Wouldn’t that be an interesting writing challenge?

InvestiGators

January 30, 2021 By Annette1 2 Comments

Mango and Brush are Gators, yes, InvestiGators!  They are agents of S.U.I.T, and they are on the case!  Will they solve the mystery?  Children who like Captain Underpants and Dog Man will enjoy this series by John Patrick Green.   I’ll be using amazon affiliate links in this review.

Investigators

More about Investigators

Raincoast Books sent me an advanced reader’s copy of InvestiGators.   This graphic novel was produced by First Second books.  Investigators is the first installment in the adventures of Mango and Brash.  You’ll find my review of InvestiGators Take the Plunge coming up this weekend.

Written for children 7-10 years old, InvestiGators introduces us into the zany world of investigation through the sewer network!

From the cover: With their Very Exciting Spy Technology and their tried-and-true, toilet-based travel techniques, the InvestiGators are undercover and on the case! And on their first mission together, they have not one but two mysteries to solve! Can Mango and Brash uncover the clues, crack their cases, and corral the crooks – or will the criminals wriggle out of their grasp?

One of the things I like about the graphic novels from First Second books is that the graphics are well done.  Not the grainy pics I grew up with. You’ll find the inking clean and clear.

As an adult reading this story, you’ll find it silly and a bit corny, but kids… my son would have LOVED THIS back in the day.  He’s a bit beyond the age range now, but he loved Captain Underpants and the like.   InvestiGators with it’s misunderstandings of words, method of travel, and silliness is perfectly suited to elementary aged children.

Should you get it?

InvestiGators is a fast-paced, fun read.  It’s goofy, silly and filled with the mystery that children love. The word-play is quirky but decent, it’s fun for children, and will draw them in.  The bright illustrations will encourage them to keep reading.  Getting children to read… it’s a good thing eh?

Bear Meets Bear

January 20, 2021 By Annette1 2 Comments

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, or perhaps a story of friendship. It’s best I suppose to describe Bear meets Bear as a Valentine’s story that succeeds because of a good friend.  A fun holiday book for children.   Please note that during this review I’ll be using amazon affiliate links.

Bear meets bear

What do you get with Bear Meets Bear?

Author Jacob Grant presents us with a delightful picture book entitled Bear Meets Bear.  Raincoast Books sent me an ARC in exchange for this Bloomsbury Children’s books picture book.  Running at 40 pages, 3-6 year olds will delight in a shy Bear, his encouraging friend, and the discovery of new friendship. You’ll find it comes as a board book, hardcover, or kindle.

Colourful images flood the pages, with plenty of white space for ease of reading.   The bold font with clear lines makes it a breeze to read.  From the earliest introduction to a Bear with a need… all the way through the Bear having another need fulfilled.

Friendship and good-natured humour filled the pages.  Poor Bear… finding himself in a situation he didn’t plan, and unsure what to do about it.  His friend Spider comes to his rescue.

Aren’t the illustrations cute?  One bear, meets another bear, and…… you’ll have to read the story to see what happens in the end.

Should you Get it?

YES, well okay, This is a lovely book to borrow from the library or to gift to younger friend or member of your family.  It would be a great “baby shower” gift for a momma to share with their baby or older sibling-to-be.   Humour, friendship, and love combined in a sweet picture book.

You are a Beautiful Beginning

January 16, 2021 By Annette1 2 Comments

You are a Beautiful Beginning is a lovely book that talk about how something is not one thing, but instead it is another thing. I absolutely adored the flow of thought in this sweet picture book.  I can’t wait to tell you all about it.  Please note affiliate links will be used in this review.

You are a beautiful beginning

The details

Roaring Brook Press has put together a wonderful picture book entitled You are a Beautiful Beginning.  Children 3-6 years old will delight in 40 pages of whimsical illustrations that fill the pages with imagination and wonder.  Author Nina Laden helps us to see the possibilities in the statements that we make.  Kelsey Garrity-Riley brings those possibilities to life with simple drawings that contain a story all their own.

What You Get

The poetry grabbed me immediately with the It is not…. combined with this It is …….  Rhyming is in couplets making You are a beautiful beginning roll easily off the tongue.

This book didn’t feel sappy to me even with lines like the one below.  You hear it all the time… it’s not the game win, it’s the having fun.  But the repeated it’s not … it’s the… that turns this tome into a looking for the positive and a different perspective.  Written for littles so the words are simple and just deep enough to encourage conversation.

I absolutely adored how the book starts with a child drawing and then a story unfolds.  Even if you never read a word you would still get a story.  Friends on a journey, exploring as they go.  It’s a wonderful world they are entering.

You’ll find simple, colourful illustrations on each page with lots of white space.  Each image has lots of detail, making for lots of possibilities in conversation.  What can you see now?  Where do you think that child is going, and what do you think they’ll be doing?   I love books with excellent illustrations as they help the child listening to be involved in the reading.

Should you Get it?

If you are looking for a poetic picture book to share with your children, You are a Beautiful Beginning, will suit your needs.  With the whimsical drawing, in earthly tones, and lots of white space, children will be introduced to looking for the positives.

Little Fox and the Wild Imagination

January 9, 2021 By Annette1 2 Comments

You know how when your child is having a bad day you just want to cheer them up?   Papa Fox has the same desire, and in Little Fox and the Wild Imagination, we see just how far a cheering up can go.

Little fox and the wild imagination

The basics of Little Fox

Raincoast Books has sent me a fun read that extols the virtues of having an excellent imagination while showing the love of a dad for his boy. Little Fox and the Wild Imagination is a rollicking ride through after-school events between Dad and son.  40 pages of explosive action, with the wild imagination of dad and son fueling events. Roaring Brook Press sent me an Advanced Readers Copy, the released copy will be a jacketed hardcover.

Learning more about Little Fox and the Wild Imagination

You will love the crazy imaginations of dad and son.  Jorma Taccone does an excellent job of showing the love between parent and child.  Dan Santat does an excellent job of bringing that story to life.   Just look at this illustrations!   I love the excellent use of colour and those facial expressions aren’t they just the best?

The font size is great, lending itself well to reading easily while a child in sitting with you, or for engaging a group of children. The text itself varies in size, shape, and colour depending on what’s going on.

While this picture book is geared to 3-6 year olds, I think that children up to 8 will thoroughly enjoy the antics of Poppa and Little Fox.

I should have taken a picture of the roaring dinasaurs tumbling out of the fun, but alas I just have this precursor to the dinosaur excitement.

Should you get it?

I love how everyday events are filled with excitement when imagination takes central stage. A walk home, a bus ride, and even bedtime.  Fun, lovable, thoroughly enjoyable.   Little Fox and the Wild Imagination is a sure fire winner.  The bond seen in families is a wonderful thing indeed.

The Runaway Shirt

January 2, 2021 By Annette1 2 Comments

The Runaway Shirt is one of the cutest books I have read in a long time.  You have just GOT to get this book to enjoy with your child.  A mom and child having a hoot doing regular household stuff.  Stuff that you’d see in any home, and that is what makes it the cutest book.  It’s a book that most any mom (or even a dad) could relate to.

the runaway shirt

The Runaway Shirt, the details

Kathy MacMillan has written an adorable book featuring a mom, a pile of laundry and cute youngster.   It’s a story that hopefully will be played out in thousands of homes everyday around the world.    Julia Castano has done a wonderful job illustrating this fun story.

Published by Familius, I am reviewing this book on behalf of Raincoast Books.  Meant for preschool and kindergarten children, this book will hopefully inspire laughter!  I received a soft covered edition, but on amazon, it sells as a kindle book or hardcover picture book.

The Joy of The Runaway Shirt

I love the look and feel of The Runaway Shirt.  Between the colours of the illustrations, and the sweetness of the story, the reader feels drawn into the story.  Running and having fun with a little child while engaging in regular household chores.  Such fun!

The font is great for reading with a group of children. It is dark and well formed to stand off the pages for ease of reading. Always on a light background.

Should you get it?

I remember having fun with my lad while I did the laundry, the giggles and relationship building that occurred.   It was a lovely way to introduce him to helping mom with the chores AND having fun at the same time.

The Runaway Shirt brought back happy memories, but not only that, it’s a fun, sweet story about the relationship between parent and child.

Enjoy a sweet, fun read with your child today!
