Parenting Series: Foolishness

Foolishness, it’s in all of us.  It’s readily apparent in our children when they argue with us, when they insist on doing what they want, when one event seems the most important thing ever, and so forth.  Foolishness is evident everywhere.

So the question we need to ask, from what does foolishness stem from?   From the heart.

Proverbs 4:23 tells us “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Make the heart your priority.  ALWAYS.  Focus on the heart.  See the heart when you discipline your children, not just their actions, but their heart.

How do you do this?
1. remind yourself over and over and over again…it’s the heart you are after, not the actions.
2. lasting change ALWAYS happens through the heart. Always.  

You don’t want to help create a stone heart, one that is hard and set.  You want your children to have soft hearts, malleable to the will of God. 

Knowing that you are a fool, parenting a fool, how then do you parent?
1. Glory.  Show your child a higher better glory.  Letting them see God’s awesomeness so it will be easier for them to submit to God’s law.  The more we see God the less apt we are to be foolish.
2. Wisdom.  Let your child see God’s wisdom at work and how it far surpasses our own.  Tell your children how wonderful it is to rely on God’s wisdom.
3. Story.   Tell the story of Jesus over and over and over again. Tell of how he’s acted in your life and the lives of people you know.   Make sure they know the stories of faith. 
4. Welcome.  Oh.. let them know how God gives them welcome.  How he invites them. Tell them that message of salvation over and over and over again.

But mostly remember this.  God is a God of grace.  He freely extends it. His grace is always extended toward his children of faith.

No One is Righteous

Hello, welcome to another day of learning from the book of Romans.   For the rest of the series go here.  Today we’ll be learning from Romans 3:9-20.

9 What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 
ALL are sinners.  No one is any better than anyone else.  Jew or Greek…all under sin.  All already charged.
 
 10 as it is written:

“None is righteous, no, not one;
11     no one understands;
    no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
    no one does good,
    not even one.”
I read these words, and I see the condemnation.  No one, not a single person can be righteous.  EVERYONE has turned aside. So you see it.. TOGETHER the people have become worthless.   It’s like this whole group mentality thing.  Making choices to turn aside from God.  So that not even one person does good. Not a single one.
 
13 “Their throat is an open grave;
    they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
14     “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16     in their paths are ruin and misery,
17 and the way of peace they have not known.” 
This is how God sees sin you know? At least that’s my reading of this passage.  How everyone has turned aside, no one is able to do good.. so we get this horrid picture of what sin looks like… all that bitterness and venom and misery.   So much deception and ruin.   This is what sin is.   A people who know no peace. A people who not NOT known the way of peace… but how could they?  They are a people full of bitterness, venom and deception.
It’s a sad place to be in.
 
18     “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Not only that.. there is NO fear of God.  None.  They simply don’t get the thought of being in awe of God.  Of knowing the fear of him as the Triune Lord.
 

19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

So the law of God is written on the hearts of all. We know this from previous verses.  People who are under the law are people under sin.  People who are accountable to God.  We are.  We are accountable to God, and when we are under the law we cannot be justified.  The law brings knowledge of sin.    

No justification through the law.
The law shows us sin.
Sin means no peace.
Sin means no knowing God, a turning from the truth written on our hearts.

So this leaves me here… is there no hope then?  
If we are all under the law and the law means sin… then how can we be justified?

This is where today’s passage leaves us… asking the question.  
How can we then be justified?

God’s Righteousness Despite our Lack

Hello, continuing my study in the Book of Romans. Glad to have you here. Click here for the rest of the series   Today the first 8 verses of chapter 3. 

 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? 2 Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3 What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? 4 By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written,

“That you may be justified in your words,
    and prevail when you are judged.”

5 But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) 6 By no means! For then how could God judge the world? 7 But if through my lie God’s truth abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? 8 And why not do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.

I can’t say this is the easiest section to understand.  I really can’t. 
If circumcision is of the heart, if we are to be Spirit-led, then is there any advantage to being Jewish.  That’s the question right?
Paul says the advantage is in that they were the first people to received God’s word.

Now.. does it matter that some of the Jewish people were unfaithful?
Not really.
It doesn’t really say anything about God’s faithfulness.  He remains faithful and righteous.

God is true.  EVEN IT everyone involved with him turns out to be a liar.  It doesn’t change God’s character one whit.  He is faithful and fully righteous. 

In fact… our lack of being faithful and righteous shows off just how faithful and righteous God himself is.

So….Does that mean God shouldn’t judge us for being what we are?
Seriously DUDE?

Imagine a child does something wrong, despite his folks telling him how to do things correctly.   Does that mean the parents have done wrong OR that they would be wrong to say HEY.. son..you did that incorrectly?   Of course not.

God needs to be able to call sin what it is.. Sin.  It’s a choosing to do something against God’s written law.  (written on our hearts remember?)  If our sin shows God off for being better.. that’s a good thing…but doesn’t mean we should want to sin, or that God can’t call us on our action.   Just means more glory to God.

Word and Deed need to Match

Hello, continuing my study in the Book of Romans. Glad to have you here. Click here for the rest of the series. Today Romans 2:12-29.

12 For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

The connection of the law to sin is one that sometimes confounds me.   For instance, those of us who follow the Lord God aren’t bound by the law, but that doesn’t mean we can do whatever we want.   We aren’t bound to the law, but those who who obey it, who obey the law, are justified before the Lord God.  

In fact those who obey the law of God without even knowing, show that the law of God is written on the hearts of people.  WOW.  just think about that for a minute eh?  God’s law is written on our hearts already.  He put them there.   This, this is why there is  only excuse for folks to not obey the law.  It’s there, we just make choices to follow it or not.   It’s our bad decision-making that is to blame, not the law.   It is this bad decision-making that brings us before the Judgement of God.

17 But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God 18 and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; 19 and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— 21 you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? 22 You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law. 24 For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

This section seems to start off well eh?   Folks who know the law and do it, doing what is excellent and right according to the law, Paul has some hard questions for these people.

When you teach others, do you do what you teach?

  • When you teach staying faithful to your spouse,  do you?
  • When you say don’t take things that aren’t yours, do you take your own teaching to heart?
  • If you abhor idols, do you take from the temples?

When you boast in the law and don’t do what you teach, then you bring dishonor to God and his ways.  You cause his name to be blasphemed by the non-believers. If you say God and his ways are important then do so.  Model what you teach!!

This brings to mind how I’m trying to teach my lad to spend time in god’s word daily.  If I ask him to do so and I don’t,  then what am I truly saying?   I want to be honest with him.  To that end we’ll be working on holdING each other accountable, talking about what we are learning at supper time.  This gives us the whole day to get our devotions done.  🙂  and if we don’t get them done, we talk to God about it rather than apologizing to each other.

25 For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. 26 So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27 Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law. 28 For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. 29 But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.

Take for instance here circumcision.   It’s something that all Jews do.  It’s supposed to be a sign of covenant between God and his chosen people.  But if you don’t live out that covenant,  so,if you as a Jew, don’t live out the law that is already written on your heart, than what point is the circumcision?   Those that obey the law without being circumcised condemn those that are circumcised but don’t act it.  

I found this statement interesting.    “But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter.  His praise is not from man but from God.”   So does that imply that those who follow God truly, who live according to the law written on our hearts, that in essence we are Jewish within?  I know it means we are true believers, true children of God.  I just found the statement curious.   It doesn’t really ,after in the end does it though?  The important thing is, do you live by the Spirit, following what is written on our hearts in both word and deed?

Choices Have Consequences

the rest of the series.    Today Romans 1:1-11. 

 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. 3 Do
you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet
do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.
6 He will render to each one according to his works: 7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8 but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. 9 There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For God shows no partiality.

 After reading Romans 1, and seeing God’s wrath on those who choose not to follow him, this section has me stepping cautiously.

To not judge those who chose to not follow God, to not heed the truth that they know, who choose to follow a lie.  DO NOT JUDGE THEM.   That’s God’s job right?   The judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.   NOTE: GOD’s judgement.  Not mine or yours. Because you know what?   If we judge others, we need to be mindful of our own hard and impenitent hearts.   Think on that?

It’s a hard one I find.
I have found myself getting angry with the LGBTQ folks, for how they twist things, and push people around to achieve their own ends.   Some of the things some of the folks do.. it’s hurtful.  And that deliberate hurtfulness makes me angry.

But God warns against that here.  I need to be bigger than that hurt.  It reminds me of that passage in the parenting book… about how the more secure we are in God’s love, in his embrace, the less likely we are to be hurt by what others do. 

Also if I remember that God is the one who renders judgement, that it is HIS gig, not mine, then this truth gives rest.   He will render to each one according to his works.  God’s judgement based on our choices.   Those who follow after him, patient in well-doing, seeking God’s glory and honor, who seek for immortality…those God will gift with eternal life.  The self-seeking, followers after lies well.. God’s wrath and fury await them.    Evil-doers will find tribulation and distress, the righteous will find glory, honour and peace awaits.

Just as the gospel came first to the Jews and then to the Greeks, so too judgement comes first to the Jews then to the Greeks.   God will show no partiality.  Judgement comes to all.  One way or the other… choices have consequences.

God’s Wrath, Choices Made, Natural Consequences

Today Romans 1:18-31.

Today we’ll be closing off Chapter One, yesterday we saw how the righteous live by faith, today this section in the ESV is called God’s wrath on unrighteousness. 

18 For
the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For
his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature,
have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in
the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For
although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to
him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts
were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because
they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served
the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
26 For
this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women
exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and
the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed
with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men
and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They
were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness,
malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness.
They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though
they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things
deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who
practice them.

Remember yesterday?   How Faith carries one from one generation to the next?  Did you know there are people who work to suppress God’s truth? 
 For
the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 

These people KNOW about God.  They can see the truth plainly because God revealed it to them BUT They don’t honour God or thank him. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For
his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature,
have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in
the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For
although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to
him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts
were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.   Do you see how they have no excuse?  God is evident in the things we can see, and God made it clear to them.  They have no excuses, they just think to their own wisdom. Their foolish hearts, thinking to their own wisdom, have become darkened.
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because
they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served
the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.   Amen means So Be It. These people made a choice.  They knew God’s truth, but they put it aside in order to believe a lie.  A choice. They turned aside from the Creator God to follow their own path.  THEREFORE God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women
exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and
the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed
with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men
and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
God let them live with the choices they made and compounded those choices.  They chose to ignore God as revealed in nature. Ergo, God let them be turned from nature to unnatural pleasures with each other. I honestly never even really thought of this before. How because of their choice to ignore God as revealed to them, God let them live with unnatural pleasures.  It’s like a natural consequence.
 
28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They
were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness,
malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness.
They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though
they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things
deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who
practice them.
And again, since they chose to turn away from God (who had revealed himself to them) God let them turn away from the things they knew to be right. So they have been filled with all manner of unrighteousness.

Faith Lives On, Be Not Ashamed.

Hello, continuing my study in the Book of Romans. Glad to have you here. Click here for the rest of the series.    Today Romans 1:16-17. 

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

What then do these verses say today?

For I am not ashamed of the gospel.  Honestly, sometimes I have to wonder about that. I remember telling a lady about a good Christian Mystery I read once, one that weaved the bible into the mystery in a good manner. She asked me why I liked it so much and I found myself stumbling all over the place not wanting her to think I’m weird and yet wanting to say why I liked the book so much. Even now sometimes I find myself not wanting to say “I’m being kind because that’s what God would have me do.”   I shouldn’t be like that.  I should have that boldness to say what’s really important…and the end of it is.. GOD.  Seriously, if God weren’t God working in my life I’d be such a lost soul.

But why shouldn’t we be ashamed?
for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes
God is our salvation, but not only ours. It’s for EVERYONE who believes.  Not just Joe Right or the jewish believers … but for EVERYONE.  

 to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Admittedly… God came first to the Jewish nation.  The whole Old Testament is about that. He chose them.  His son was born within the Jewish nation.   His first friends and followers were Jewish people, he first was in the temple as a lad astounding the Jewish Teachers.  But from there the gospel spread.  Friends, families, neighbours, Roman Guards and more.  Seeing the power of God’s salvation at work.  WHY?   Because his people were not ashamed to proclaim the gospel of God.

So if I truly want to see God’s good news spread I MUST stop being ashamed of the gospel. It must be there and ready on my tongue when people ask me why I live as I do.  Why I teach my son as I do.   Why I’m kind or helpful or whatever.  It’s all God and I mustn’t be afraid to admit it..

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
I read these words and I find myself compelled to think about those last words.  The righteous shall live by faith.  It’s true you know.   If it weren’t for God and his righteousness I wouldn’t be the person I am today.  The faith of my parents is revealed in me.  The faith of the righteous who have gone on before me is passed on through me.  My son’s faith will be influenced by the faith of those who have gone on before him. 

I wonder who else’s faith will be influenced by my generation, and who will be influenced by my son’s generation.  It moves on faith does…
