Five Minute Friday

Far from simple

December 11, 2022 By Annette1 8 Comments

Did you know that this is the simply the last word prompt of the year?   I know…. I’m devastated too!  But as Kate says, we all need a break once in a while.  🙂   The prompt?  The word Simple.  It’s such an easy word in many ways, and yet… perhaps not.  Our faith is far from simple I think, and yet, the simplest thing ever.  Why does it get so complicated sometimes?

far From Simple

Far from simple

This morning in church, a
sermon I didn’t expect
was preached.
Talking about politics
and how people so often
expect politicians to solve
the issues in society.

We look for heroes to save us
and so often miss the
saviour that is right
in front of us.
A saviour who came in
a rather unexpected way,
and wasn’t quite what was
predicted by Balaam.

I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near:
a star shall come out of Jacob,
    and a scepter shall rise out of Israel;

As Jesus didn’t exactly come
with a scepter in his hand did he?
He came as a baby, grew as a boy,
turned into a man, with a short
active ministry life.
A life in which, yes, he showed
his power over wind, wave, animals,
and influenced more people than
we’d ever know.

And yet, this simple boy, this
baby, son of God, influences
millions of people worldwide.
Sometimes in ways hurtful, but
if we truly remember, if we think
to what his message is…
it’s a far from simple one.
Glorify God.
Enjoy him forever.

Do we remember to do that?
Do we remember that he is
to always be our focus?
And as we focus on glorifying him,
we have the benefit of
ENJOYING him.
Do you enjoy knowing God?
Is it part of the joy of your day
to spend time with him?
Or to talk about him?

Seems so simple
and yet,
so many of us that profess
to know the Lord
and claim that he knows us
full-well indeed,
so many of us struggle
with making him a regular,
daily, intimate part of
our lives.

Far from simple maybe eh?

far from simple

God Speaks

Numbers 24:15-19

15 And he took up his discourse and said,

“The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor,
the oracle of the man whose eye is opened,
16 the oracle of him who hears the words of God,
and knows the knowledge of the Most High,
who sees the vision of the Almighty,
falling down with his eyes uncovered:
17 I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near:
a star shall come out of Jacob,
    and a scepter shall rise out of Israel;
it shall crush the forehead of Moab
and break down all the sons of Sheth.
18 Edom shall be dispossessed;
Seir also, his enemies, shall be dispossessed.
    Israel is doing valiantly.
19 And one from Jacob shall exercise dominion
and destroy the survivors of cities!”

Psalm 86:8-13

There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
nor are there any works like yours.
9 All the nations you have made shall come
and worship before you, O Lord,
    and shall glorify your name.
10 For you are great and do wondrous things;
    you alone are God.
11 Teach me your way, O Lord,
    that I may walk in your truth;
unite my heart to fear your name.
12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
and I will glorify your name forever.
13 For great is your steadfast love toward me;
you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

Showing Up

August 26, 2022 By Annette1 16 Comments

So guess what happened today? A friend came over with the thought of helping us with the shed.  Jim was having a hard morning so instead, he helped me with trimming back our maple tree.   In some ways, it was kinda funny.  He’d trim something, notice a dead branch and cut it off.  He’d think he was all done and then would look around and go “Oh, I didn’t see that dead one there, let me see how I can get to it”.    This happened so often I started to inwardly chuckle about it, but outwardly I’d help him, holding the ladder, and carrying away branches for him.  We had a thoroughly productive morning and he taught me a lot about caring for trees. Then the lad helped load up the truck for a trip to the dump so all those branches are gone!  Utterly fantastic!  Anyways, it made me think about the word prompt this week and how nicely this friend was about showing up.

Showing Up

Showing Up

Showing up is not
just a fling.
It’s a gift a time,
a meaningful thing.

A helpful moment,
often God-made,
to meet a need
it should be obeyed.

In my email often found
ways to show others
your faith in God
reaching out to brothers.

Sometimes it’s fancy
ways of evangelism, or
programs to put on, or
methods of catechism.

But what I’m learning
works is simply
and plainly showing up
even if you’re pimply!

Just showing up matters.
Teaching, praying,
studying, helping,
working and playing

Be that Sunday School helper,
and lender of tools.
Be the mover, the idea-giver,
and the setter of stools.

Mow a lawn, walk a dog,
read a book, write a letter,
pay it forward, and create a smile
Do what you can to make it better.

And when people ask
why you are showing up?
Tell them the truth,
God makes you look up!

God is the reason for
the things that you do
I’m finding my way to
make him relevant to you!

Yup, me, still talking

I don’t often do rhyming couplets in a very “poetry-ish” style, and boy, it can be a challenge!  🙂   Anyways, God is good and walks me through eh?  But seriously, show up with your faith.  Be out and about in your community making an impact and try not to be shy about your reasons for doing so.  Otherwise, how will people know?

James 2:18-26 (ESV)

18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20 Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

God Hides Me

November 19, 2021 By Annette1 14 Comments

I was seriously starting to wonder if I would be able to participate in Five Minute Friday this week. I have switched who hosts my blog over to a company called lyrical. There’s still some part that needs adjusting, but at least I can write posts again!!!   🙂   Miss Kate tells us the word this week is hide.  It’s not the first time I’ve pondered, what my poem God Hides me, speaks about, but it was a recurring theme all day today.

God hides Me

God Hides Me

I ponder a word
Hide
In my head immediately
a song starts
Guide me oh, thou great Jehovah
pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold me with Thy powerful hand

As I’ve gone through
the day, waiting for
the blog to be transferred
(started Wednesday early)
as this song plays through

I wonder.
What will Christians
Do as Seniors
in nursing homes?

With the popularity
of praise and worship music
that is every changing.
How will our young believers
today have songs of faith
to hold on to?

Songs that can
help them remember
all that God has
done for them over
the years, particularly when
pain increases, or
ability decreases?

Will they be able
to remember well
the God they can hide
themselves in? When memory,
regrets, and longing for
home sets in?

I’m not saying
Praise and worship
music is bad. I just
wonder with how many
new songs there always are
… how will something stick
long enough, to be recalled
when age makes it harder?

Things to ponder eh?
When you are
waiting for a blog to
reboot, in the midst of
other chores.
Recalling, through old hymn
memorized, how God
hides me in the
palm of his hand.

God hides Me

What God Has to Say

Isaiah 49:16  Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.

John 10:29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.

Psalm 96:2    Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day.

James 5:13 Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises.

It happened

November 5, 2021 By Annette1 20 Comments

I’m about to head to bed, but before heading up I thought I would check on the word prompt of the week from Miss Kate.  This week the word is prayer. I had to think about it for a little while before It happened came to me.   It didn’t come out quite the way my brain originally played it out, but the general jist is there I think.  🙂

it happened

It happened

It happened,
just like that.
Prayer requested,
a house to sell,
a home to find,
and bam, done.
God provided swiftly.

It happened,
over time,
a community joining
together.
A child sick,
it took some time.
Health restored.
God provided healing.

It happened,
“God, I want this job!”
And “God, I need this job!!!”
and yet
time and again,
No job came.
yet God provide care
And enough to make do.
Sometimes the answer is NO.

It happened
The sword of the
Spirit, moving swiftly
in a heart.
“Oh God, forgive me”
“I wasn’t thinking”
“It seemed such a small thing”
and God showed mercy
Forgiveness granted.

It happened,
a sustained prayer
over time.
And yet more time
will pass.
What will be the result?
It still open for
an answer to be poured
forth.
and yet. God’s care
does not stop.

it happened

What Does God say?

I John 5:14  This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

2 Chronicles 6:21 Hear the supplications of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place. Hear from heaven, your dwelling place; and when you hear, forgive.

Ephesians 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Psalm 4:1 Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

Savour the moment

March 26, 2021 By Annette1 12 Comments

So it’s Five minute Friday again and Miss Kate has posted this week’s word.  Savour is one of those words that evokes a variety of memories.  Savouring the beauty of a the world when one goes camping, savouring smells arising from a cookfire or stove in the house, savouring the smells of Christmas, Thanksgiving or Easter.  One can savour lessons learned and time with friends.  Currently we are in a change of seasons where out on a walk I can savour the moment as I gaze up spring flowers.

I can also savour moments in the lives of others, victories with skills learned, total wins, and life skills solidified.  Isn’t it good to relish the successes gained in the lives of family and friends?

savour the moment

Savour the Moment

Sunday afternoon
A quiet time to rest
Traditionally a day
When Mom is less stressed.

No meals to make
Unless desire to make
Perhaps today is
Time for some cake?

Leftovers await.
Inspiration may arise.
But hold… there’s a teen
Life skills must apprise.

Question arises
What does the lad think?
If on Sundays it’s his turn
For food and drink?

Sure mom he says
I can handle that
If you help abit
Lest the food all be flat!

Savour the moment
Flavours descend
A lad’s willing help
Oh… I might have to amend!

MOM! Help the cry!
I ask what’s betwist
We have no ingredient
Is the meal now a miss?

Teaching I help
The lad learn substitution
Learning a recipe’s a guide
Not always the full solution.

Savour the moment
When confidence is found
No longer hotdogs and soup
Now casseroles abound.

Savouring the moment
When skills learned in life
Mean the lad’s future
Is filled with less strife.

Able to cook,
And learn to adapt.
Part of life-learning
It all seems so apt.

savour the moment

 Genesis 9:2-3

“The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.”

Matthew 6:11

“Give us this day our daily bread.”

1 Chronicles 9:31

“Mattithiah, a Levite and the oldest son of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with baking the bread used in the offerings.”

Is it Possible?

March 12, 2021 By Annette1 20 Comments

This poem wrote itself.  As soon as I saw today’s word prompt, the words flew off my fingers. Writing about the word possible was so incredibly easy.  Is it possible?  Of course it is!   Anything, given the right circumstances, is possible.

is it possible

Poem – Is it possible?

Is it possible?
Is it possible to make the
impossible, possible?

This question fills my mind
at the single prompting
of one solitary word.

Can the impossible
be made possible?
Is it possible?

Can three distinct
beings
be just one?

Could God
walk in a garden
among his people?

Can God
Show grace
in making a big promise?

In stubbornness, can
a lesson
be learned?

In a hard-hearted
people
Listen and grow?

Can God
Make an impossible
decision?

A much loved
singleton boy
Given for a hurting world?

Impossible?
Oh just watch
the possible happen!

Scriptural Insights

Matthew 17:20
And He *said to them, “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.

Luke 18:27
But He said, “The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”

Jeremiah 32:17
‘Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You,

Matthew 19:26
But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Cucumbers Are Green

March 5, 2021 By Annette1 16 Comments

What does one do when a word prompt leaves one feeling flat?  Like honestly… what does a person do with the word green? I’m actually sitting here feeling rather vexed about this simple word green.   I wanted something easier to do!

Walking away, chatting with my hubby as he got home from work, I started to tidy up the dehydrating I did today.  I did up some carrots, apples and cucumbers.

Did you know the cucumbers are green?

Cucumbers are Green

Cucumbers are Green

Cucumbers are green
or so I’ve been told.
Mini, english, field
the green is so bold.

From flower end starting
til ripened full well.
The green of the cucumber
has that cucumber smell.

But one thing I’ve learned
as I yearly growing my own,
that leave them too long
and that green doesn’t stay.

It changes it’s hue
The fields they turn yellow,
The English get wrinkly
and then a mould starts to grow.

So cucumbers are green
When eaten they should be.
Avoid all the rest
It is best for thee.

cucumbers are green

I do have to admit that one year I grew a rather odd ball cucumber.  They ripened to a very pale green, so not a normal cucumber colour.   They had a sweet taste, unlike any cuc I have had before.  It’s one of the things I like to do when gardening, try new produce.

Even though this poem feels very silly to me, it was actually kinda fun to write.  I’m glad I didn’t give up!  🙂 Change my perspective and before you know it I had a poem!  🙂   How often isn’t that true in life.  When you change what your perspective is, things get better.  Happens all the time. 🙂
