Planning

November Plans

November 2, 2020 By Annette1 5 Comments

Did you know that Saturday was Hallowe’en?  We had three people stop in ALL young men just wanting candy.  They had plans to donate the candy received to others.  Just young men having fun with purpose.   You could tell they had planned it all out.   It was good to see them.  Definitely slow.   Just like these young men, making plans for things rather matters.  The crew has given us this challenge of listing out our November plans.  I’m not really a planner.  I’m not.  So I find these challenges rather hard.  I’ll go simple this time around I think!  🙂

Update On August Goals

My goals for the new year where somewhat varied.  So how am I doing with them?

  1. Support my son in his schooling.   The high school decided to do two courses at a time.  My son is taking one course at the high school per semester so it seemed wise to follow the same format.  Ergo I looked at his chosen course load and helped him figure out what he needed to accomplish weekly to finish on time. A weekly check-in is all he’s needing at this point, occasionally some points of clarification along the way.
  2. Produce something: well I haven’t actually written anything, or made any courses. But I have done a lot of reading. One that I am taking my time with is Why Trust the Bible? Excellent reading on why we can actually trust the bible.
  3. The unspoken goal: I did really well with before vacation.  Since then I’ve kinda stagnated.  I am working at getting myself back into a good routine.  Busyness of the fall isn’t helping but I’ve gotten a TON of things done this week which will help tons.

Continuing Goal Update

  1. Rabbitry news: I purchased three new buns to help with long-term goals. I rescued a few and helped them find new locations. I didn’t replace the sides since lumber is super expensive right now. But I did get my trays painted.  Time will tell long-term if that helped or not.
  2. Help Hubby: well, he hasn’t started on his basement room yet.  Instead, he decided to build a small shed outside.  He’s making good progress on it, building it out of pallets he gets from work.
  3. Part-time job: I’ve applied for a few jobs, been called in for interviews (yay!), and even got offered one job… and thought it was all set and then they decided to change the hours.  That didn’t work for me so it didn’t pan out.  I’m not too worried.  If God wants me to have a job, it’ll pan out.
  4. The newsletter thing: well, I haven’t really figured that out yet. Again, busyness and family commitments have taken their toll.

What’s Kept Me Busy?

raised beds turned over

Turning over gardens, replanting garden, moving plants around for the winter, moving the rabbit gardens etc.  It’s a busy time of raking leaves, and moving planters around for the winter.  This year I picked up a cover for our outdoor chairs.

Storage area in the rabbitry

Every year I need to tidy up the rabbitry in preparation for winter.  Finding spots for all the oddball pieces, or new equipment I picked up.  Storing tarps, trays, feed, etc.  Everything needs to fit just so.  In the summer I can spread things out a bit, but in the winter all my usable space is reduced as much as possible.  Often times my rabbitry clean up doesn’t happen until my November plans.  I’m glad to have it done earlier than that! 🙂

November Plans?

Do I have new goals to put on my plate?   Not really.  I’ll continue working on my original goals.  🙂    Sunday morning in church I was thinking, “oh, it’s NaNoWriMo month perhaps I can use that as inspiration!”  I suppose time will tell eh?  🙂

How about you?  Do you like to make plans or are you more flexible since you don’t like plans being broken?  Are you making new November plans or carrying on with ones you’ve made already?

Planners? I think NOT!

August 16, 2017 By Annette1 8 Comments

You know what happens to me every year around this time?

I feel like a failure.

Want to know why?

The “I’ve planned out my year”.  “I’m using this awesome planner”.  “I’ve got my studies all worked out and planned out”.

And I think to myself… I’ve tried, I’ve failed, I’ll never pull this year off because I don’t plan everything out.   I don’t even plan out a month ahead of time.

Are you like me?

Thinking yourself a failure cause you can’t figure out how to make a yearly plan work?  Or even know HOW people plan out a year and leave spaces for taking a break or sick days or the unexpected, and then how do you rework it???   I don’t get it… I could see myself erasing and having to start over, again and again and again.

I did, by hook or crook, figure out a system that works for the lad and I.

I print out a weekly schedule.  Most of the time it is the same week after week.  Just do the next thing lad of mine.  When we do a “SPINE” book I will specify more clearly what we are doing.   Just as make a model of the brain, or watch a video.  I block off time for reviews, writing and research, noting gramma days, and special times like our co-op days, I’ll add in funeral services and visits out to see friends and what not.

And you know what my lad does?
He takes GREAT JOY in crossing off what he has done.

His comments to me over the past year:

  • I like this sheet mom.
  • I can do things in whatever order I want to.
  • I don’t have to worry if I don’t get something done as we just put it on next week or make it shorter or stuff.
  • I like I can mess it up cause it’s not all pretty and in a book where I have to be careful.

How does one argue with a boy’s comments like that?
Who would have thought that new bought book or calendar could bring that concern out of a boy?  That he didn’t want to mess it up or rewrite it (perhaps he hears more than I want him too).  🙂

End thoughts?
What I’m trying to say is this.
If you are NOT a planner person, fret not.
You’ll discover a system that works for you.

It might be an oversized calendar, a self-made weekly print out sheet, a shelf with books on it that you just “do the next thing in”, a physical planner that just works with your mindset, a reverse planner where you write down what you did as opposed to what you plan to do, you might even discover the joy of using google calendar.   There are as many methods of planning as there are homeschooling families.

Just cut yourself a break momma (or dad), and know that you will discover a method that works for you and your method of schooling.   And don’t never mind what others are doing, they aren’t you (I’m speaking to myself here too eh?)

Now on the off shoot chance that you are a momma that likes to use planners and uses them did you know that your subscription to SchoolhouseTeachers.com comes with a planner you can print off?  I KNOW, how wonderful is that!!!

One subscription with no need to buy a planner, it’s a great deal!

You can find out more about that by going to this link eh?

Then once you are a member look for the planners link and you’ll be all set.

overwhelmed? perhaps not any more

September 26, 2011 By Annette1 3 Comments

So I’ve been feeling panicky and overwhelmed at the thought of teaching my lad this year. I’m not feeling very organized or planned out or anything.

Hubby dear gave me the idea of planning our next day for 15-20 minutes the night before and I think I’ll be doing that. I’ve been a bit concerned about doing TOO Much planning as I know what I’m like what I get a list I just feel “argh” if I don’t complete everything on it and I can get snippy and snappy and I do not wish to be like that.

Therefore I went to the ministry of education (Ontario) tonight to see just what they expect children to learn in grade one. And though a few things leave me wondering HOW will I teach that? Overall it was like okay….he knows that already, this we already do and he’ll get better at, and OH>>> I can teach that! It overall left me with a feeling of relief. Overtime I will be able to plan out better what we do. EVEN IF at times it is haphazard it will work out in the long run I think.

I am feeling a bit more settled again…knowing that I can teach my son, but I do need to be a bit more organized about how I go about doing it. AS LONG AS…. I remember that we are FIRST a family, and second a homeschooling one. Homeschooling will continue to fit around our need to be a family first, and one that honours God while doing so.
