Z is for Zed!

In Canada, we pronounce the letter Z as Zed.    Zed is how the British do it, so we do too.  Dating way back to the 15th century!

While British and American English have distinct vocabularies, Canadian English
vocabulary is informed by both. For the most part, however, Canadian
English follows the American influence, with Canadians preferring flashlight to torch and diaper to nappy, for example. Zed is perhaps the most iconic instance of Canadians preferring the British term to the American.  (source)

Much of our spelling is done the British way to, eh?

I have to admit to feeling a bit alarmed part way through this video… will the insidiousness of American childrens programming speak to the end of the proper way to say Z?   I really hope not.  It’s good to love our American neighbours, but also very good to be different from them as well.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Long may our ZED survive!!!!!

Art Book: Goats of Anarchy

July 5, 2017 By Annette1 4 Comments

I have to admit, I struggled about where to put this book in my line up.   It’s not an art book per-say, but photography is a form of art and it’s a big way that Leanne Lauricella spreads the word through her instagram account about her beloved goats.

This is a book of photographs, albeit very cute ones of goats.  I grew up with goats running around.  They are characters who seem to know just how to get into trouble, or to make themselves look so cute as to get out of the trouble they found themselves in.

The goats of anarchy are no different.

Come on.. Look at this face.  ๐Ÿ™‚

This book is just filled with images of her goats.  ๐Ÿ™‚

I have to admit, I did need to wrestle with even posting this book though.  As a person who raises and breeds rabbits I dislike people making assumptions, or making farmers look bad, or use inflammatory language in regards to other people who raise and breed animals.   I saw all this in the text of Goats of Anarchy.  I understand that people involved in rescue tend to see the worst of people, and it’s really easy to make assumptions, or accusations, or to paint people with one paint brush.   Doesn’t mean I don’t HATE it.  “Cause I do.

That said.. I do know that there are nasty people out there.
Not everyone cares well for their critters, and some have more ability to allow suffering that I cannot abide.   For animals caught up in that nastiness.. I am SO GLAD there are rescues out there to say “hey baby goat… let me help you out”.

So I can not whole heartedly recommend this book to you.  I don’t know if you have the ability to weed through the rhetoric found in the pages, but if you are able to ignore or wade past the “language of rescuers” to enjoy the great photography of goats being well.. the silly, creative, smart critters they can be… then it’s a fun book to look through.  ๐Ÿ™‚

The first half of the book introduces us to her goats.   Sometimes she does a group shot, and then she’ll do individual shots.  Not everyone is a goat though… into the mix are a couple of pigs, mini horse and donkey.

She gives a snippet of information about health needs and history, and snippets.

It was a fun little book to go through.   Some of her goats have been through a rough time and she’s given them a better place to be, and that’s a good thing.   Mind…if you go through it.. watch out for those goat smiles….they’ll make you want to get one of your own for sure!  ๐Ÿ™‚

Y is for Yukon!

July 4, 2017 By Annette1 12 Comments

Hello!   Welcome to the second last week of Blogging through the alphabet!   Can you believe it?  Wow… it’s been a whirl wind hasn’t it?

This week Amanda and I bring you the letter Y!

Since I have been bringing you all things Canadian during this alphabetic tour, this week I’m going to talk with you about the Yukon!

Think Jack London, Call of the Wild, Snow, tundra, permafrost, Inuit, snow, sun, frontiersmen, cold winters, sled dogs and the northern lights.

Or take a photographers viewpoint:

The Yukon is located up north.
It is host to Canada’s largest mountain, Mount Logan.
AND the smallest desert in the world (yes, under all that snow is a desert) called Carcross.

It is located right next door to Alaska (the USA) and the Northwest Territories.

The population of the Yukon is 33, 897 with 2/3’s of that living in Whitehorse.  Sparsely populated, with year round snow (even if in summer it falls sparsely), interesting animals (polar bears, moose, artic fox, stone sheep etc.), hunting, fishing, a large film and tourist industry, forestry and more.

Parenting Series: Authority

June 29, 2017 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Authority.

We all fight it.

We fight it tooth and nail, so why shouldn’t our children be any different?

We all have the same heart condition.  A desire to do what we want to do and not do what anyone else wants us to do.  Even the people pleasers among us please us because it serves us well to do so.

We all have this need, this push for self-rule.

The only one who can truly deal with this “I want to be in control” part of us is Jesus.  God’s grace is what helps us.

Knowing that.. what is our “job” as parents?

To teach our children to obey our authority as this teaches them how to obey God’s authority.   So as we exercise our authority as ambassadors of Christ, we are doing the work of the gospel.

Remember whom we represent to our children, if we are raising them in a godly household.  We represent God.  That should influence our every relationship.

So how do we help our children see their need for God?
 – Help them understand why they do what they do
 – Establish your authority early in the little things.
 – Help your children see their heart in their actions
 – Be consistent in your exercising of authority…not affected by your mood, emotions, health, time etc.  Be consistent as God would be.
 – Point your children to the hope of the Lord, how God is the one who changes hearts and minds.

I can’t say this was the easiest chapter to work through.

it’s given me ideas about how I can keep talking with my lad about his heart and how that ties in with his actions.  I need to keep talking about the hope that is found in the Lord.  Not just focusing on the moment, but on the forever.

Art Book: Canadian Art Ideas

June 28, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

The Canadian Art Ideas is a teacher resource book.    I used it with the lad when he was younger as it’s geared for grades 2-4.  It has over 50 different art activities, which honestly aren’t just good for Canada.

What makes it Canadian is the section they have about 2/3’s of the way through the book, Canadian Inspired Art Ideas, which covers topics such as aboriginal snowshoes, Canadian collage, the aurora borealis and more.

The book is mostly though pages you can use to teach different art concepts which is a world wide teaching aspect eh?  ๐Ÿ™‚   Subjects such as texture, symmetry, line design, geometric shapes, drawing people and using dough to make structures.

It’s a handy 80 page book that is almost fully reproducible (the student pages, not the teaching pages) for use with your homeschool or class.

This book is a useful addition to the study of art for any class any where, and helpful when studying the different areas of Canada for inspiration of how to do art differently as part of your studies.

X is for… An Excellent Time to Celebrate Canada’s Birthday

June 27, 2017 By Annette1 13 Comments

Thank you for joining Amanda and I as we blog through the alphabet. This week, X!

On July 1st this year Canada will be celebrating her 150th birthday.

To that end oh my, things are getting busy.
Stores is promoting their 150th birthday sales.
Communities are prettying themselves up.. for instance our town put up a lovely begonia bed made up in the shape of the Canada flag.
Towns are putting together bigger than normal Canada day events.

I have to admit, it’s rather fun watching folks prepare.

Even funnier… on our family vacation (celebrating my mom’s 80th) my sisters (who don’t celebrate Canada Day) were busy talking about how they should have a party for all their friends this year.  After all, Canada’s turning 150 this year!

As to what we’ll do?   I haven’t a clue!  I’m not really planning a party (I’ll let my younger sister plan that).   I expect we’ll take in the town events, probably go out to the local provincial park and have a bbq supper, swim and walk (if the weather is nice that is).

If you want to find out what’s going on across Canada, you can check out this site.
Celebrate Canada is a four-day celebration that begins on June 21 with
National Aboriginal Day, continues with Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day (June
24) and Canadian Multiculturalism Day (June 27), and comes to a
spectacular finish on Canada Day (July 1). Find out what is going on in
your region and across the country!

If you are in Ontario, check out some of these Canada Day events.   Sure to be something to interest most anyone eh?  ๐Ÿ™‚

Canada Book: Canadian Province Notebook

June 26, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

This is a different Canada book than I normally would post. This is a notebooking workbook that I have used off and one with my lad throughout our homeschooling journey. I haven’t USED the book persay, but I’ve used the ideas found within it’s pages.

Let me tell you about “Canadian Province Notebook”.

Filled with notebooking and workbook pages that will help you work through the Canadian Provinces.

The book starts off with teaching students how to find and request letters of information from provinces.   Granted with the ease now of going to provincial website and simply connecting with their tourism department, having to write off for letters is a bit not as necessary I think.  Though the practice of learning how to write letters requesting help is a good one to learn.

It also walks the student through how to use a bibliography and how to write cards with all the information on them from the books they use for a report.   It even provides a checklist for the student to use when writing their reports in the notebooking pages to make sure they’ve included all the information they need to and are on topic.

One of the features I like is that the inside front and back covers have the provincial symbols (except for the crests and flags) of each of the provinces and territories.  It is a touch outdated as it doesn’t have Nunavut in it.
