Parenting Series: Lost

Our children aren’t just badly behaved at times, they are individuals lost in sin. Everything they do stems from that condition.   

This means you need to think about what a lost child needs.
1. Insight.  They need to see how they need your oversight and protection.  They need to understand that what they are fighting is the sin that is within them.

2. Compassion.  One doesn’t get mad at a lost child, or scold them for being lost.  One offers aid to a lost child, doing their best to have them become found.

3. Hope.  As children begin to realize their lost condition, we can have hope.  We are then in a position to show them the help that is available to them. God sent his son to redeem them, all they need to do is call out to him for help and believe that he’ll do so.

4. Rescue.  Parenting is a heart-rescue mission.  We can’t force our children to turn to the Lord God.  All we can do is point the way.  We can address their heart issues, and praying that God will open their eyes and heart to him.

5. Wisdom.  Teaching our children how to say no.  To say no to sin, to the temptation to behave in ways they shouldn’t.   This is an important concept to teach them.

I have found this chapter falls into line with the rest of the book.  The realization that we are no different from our children, and like them we have need for insight, hope, rescue, compassion and wisdom.  We so need God’s intervention in our lives.

If we know this and truly accept it, then it makes it easier for us to offer it to our children don’t you think?

Parenting Series: Process

I don’t know about you, but ah.. sometimes I just want my child to be different, to change their behaviour right now.  To have the light at the end of the tunnel be right there with me.  

To not have to punish, “have long talks with”,  shake my head in frustration (or bang it against the wall)…. I want that change and I want it now.

But one thing I’ve learned…change isn’t like that.  It’s a whole process.  That is what David Tripp wants to talk to us about in this chapter.  How change is a process not this instantaneous event.

Mr. Tripp reminds us to look to our own life.  Does God make sudden changes in our life for the most part?   Or is the change in our behaviour a more gradual one?  Generally the latter right?  

I know it’s true in my own life.  I don’t suddenly start realizing all the time, the depth of God’s love for me.  I forget and need to be reminded, and at times it hits me hard about how much he cares for me and ergo, how hard should it be for me to change something I do in response to that great love?   How hard is it really to behold his glory and to be changed by it?   

Seeing that level of forgetfulness in myself helps me have compassion for my lad who struggles as well…and doesn’t have the experience under his belt that I do.   It helps me to stop and take a breath and explain to him yet again that I will ALWAYS forgive him if he’s sorry for his actions.  To ask him again, how will he turn from his wrong ways to seek to do what is right?   

Having that in mind, Mr. Tripp reminds us of three tenets of parenting
1. You need to parent with a process mentality.  Don’t look for sudden change but long-term change.  Parenting is a day by day, bit by bit method of caring for those in your care.
2. You need to see parenting as one unending conversation.  God put your child in your family for a reason.  So you don’t have that pressure of wanting instantaneous change.  Therefore you know that every conversation, every disciplinary action, every moment you spend with your children is just another link in the chain of change.
3. You need to parent with a project mentality.  Change is always a process, this gives you a chance to look for points of influence instead of just reacting to what’s in front of you.  Be the point of change. 

I have to admit, it’s SO easy to ignore all that and just react to what’s going on in the family.  It is!   But seriously… is it for the long-term good of those we parent?  We need to exemplify God in our actions… living by the gifts he has given us, showing the fruits of the spirit in our actions and words. 

It’s a process of grace.  God’s grace bestowed upon us his beloved children, let us then show that grace to our young.

Art Book: My Name is Georgia

YAY!!!   One of my favourite people is doing a guest post for me today.   Lori is going to tell you about a neat book and interesting person.
One of my favorite artists is Georgia O’Keefe. Partly because she
is New Mexican, partly because her artwork is just stunning, partly
because she is just an interesting person. Whatever way you look at it,
Georgia O’Keefe is worth learning a bit about. That is why, when I was
able to visit the Georgia O’Keefe Museum in Santa Fe, NM, I picked up a
children’s biography about her to share with the girls.

This
is a lovely children’s book that takes us from Georgia’s childhood
through to her old age. She moved from her Wisconsin childhood home to
Chicago, New York, Texas, and New Mexico. She was always searching for
inspiration and she found it in nature.

This
is not a difficult book to read but it is an inspiring one. Reach for
your desires – this is the inspiration from Georgia O’Keefe. And if it
encourages you to read more about her and all that she did for the art
movement and community, well, that’s all the better.
This book is published by Voyager Books and was purchased at the Georgia O’Keefe Museum in Santa Fe, NM.

The letter V, Canadian Style

 HEY O…
Did you know
This year Canada 
 Turns the big 1 5 0!

Which of course got me to thinking about the origins of Canada.   It’s good to do that once in a while you know?    Thinking of the rivalries between the French and English, the First nation peoples, the Metis and the settlers. How we finally managed to come together as a country, despite all our differences and without a major civil war.   Really big battles yes, major civil war no.

Which got me to thinking about Queen Victoria. 

She was the queen when Canada became a country.  She was known as a strong advocate for Canada as a confederacy.   She never visited Canada, but her name is spread far and wide across our beloved land.   You could learn more about Queen Victoria here.

Which of course led to be think about Victoria, which is is the capital city of British Columbia and is located on Vancouver Island.   One day I would like to travel all the way out west with my lad, I’ve been out there to visit my sister but that was more to visit her and less to sight see.  🙂  It would be neat to visit Butchart Gardens and other tourist traps of Victoria, BC.  

And IN British Columbia you can find a small bird called the Hutton’s Vireo.  You can learn more about the bird here.  🙂

Art Book: Splash of Color

 Ah… I need to apologize to you all.. being away last week totally wrecked up my routine for getting posts ready for the blog.  TOTALLY!!!    I need to figure out a way to get caught back up!  

Anyways, I have a neat book here for you today… it’s not a little book by any means, rather long… think the size of those big sketch books you can buy for art … NOT the HUGE ones, but those middle sized ones.   It’s called Splash of Color.  It’s a painting and colouring book.

I know I know.. SAY WHAT?  

It’s a painting and colouring book, it’s made on watercolour paper so you can colour the pages with watercolour brushes or pens, or use paints OR use pencil crayons. 

The point is to colour.  🙂

 Isn’t that welcome lovely?   Makes me think of the pleasure it brings to share art with each other doesn’t it with you too?   And this book calls you to make art, to share that art on the easy tear off sheets. 

I have GOT to show you my favourite design in the whole book.  I have this major thing for chickens.  🙂  So guess what!   I found a chicken!!!!!

Though admittedly I also like this one: 

Lest you think they only have animals in this book, let me show you some of the variety.

The paper is a very sturdy watercolour paper, able to be pulled out easily to be displayed.  They are designed so they will fit in 9 x 12 frame.  The pages, as you can see pull up from the top.

The opening cover fits smoothly behind each page to provide additional support in your painting & colouring endeavors. 

I definitely recommend this book you and if you do get it, you might want to consider trying out their watercolor pencils as well!

E.T. Phone Home..

I don’t know about you, but I really remember that movie and need to show it to my lad sometime.  🙂

Now with that in mind.. I want you to think back to Canada turning 100 years and wanting to find a good way to commemorate it.

It’s two years before the first men even walked on the moon, years before images came back from Mars and what not.  

BUT The government decided to do something you might think is a bit odd. They helped a small town in Alberta put up a UFO landing pad.  St. Paul was designated a centennial city.

Pretty neat eh?

Like I mean that SERIOUSLY.  

Who thinks of putting in a UFO landing pad?   Only us creative Canadians.  🙂   (grinning widely here eh?)

It was put up (with no public funds being used) at a time when people were highly optimistic about space travel. Wouldn’t it be cool to explore space and possibly find alien species!?!?!?!

St. Paul, Alberta wanted to do something different from all the other towns around them as a drawing card.. no oversized food or furniture for them!   How about the world’s first UFO landing pad?   Make the aliens feel welcome yes?  And … if in welcoming aliens you made yourself a tourist attraction.. ALL THE BETTER!  (see this article).

Built as part of the Canadian centennial celebration in 1967, St. Paul,
Alberta has an official UFO landing welcome site. Weighing just over 130
tons, the large flat concrete structure contains a time capsule to be
opened on the 100-year anniversary of the pad’s opening in 2067. (source)


It’s actually a rather informative centre, teaching people about UFO’s and various sightings.  You’ll find photos of possible landing sites, mysterious Cattle mutilations and crop circles. 

A large map of Canada has been made with stones that come from each of the provinces.  This map is found at the back of the pad.

Canada Book: O Canada, Our National Anthem

Want to help your children learn Canada’s National Anthem?   Check out this book from Scholastic.  A 32 softcover picture book.

It’s LOADED with images from all across Canada, her people, her land, her infrastructure and more.

My son thoroughly enjoyed this book when he was learning the words to O Canada.  I would belt out the words to the song and he’d be flipping the pages singing along with me.  It really didn’t take him very long to learn the words either.  🙂
