Listening for Line Breaks

May 7, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Do you remember me talking about sound and how you need to use it to write well?   As I was reading in “how to write a poem” this thought came up again.  How important it is, when you are writing free verse, to listen to what you are writing so you can break your lines where the sound demands it.

What is free verse?

Free verse is poetry that does not rhyme or have a regular meter. It will often closely follow the natural rhythms of speech. A regular pattern of sound or rhythm may emerge in free-verse lines, but the poet does not adhere to a metrical plan in their composition

How to write it.

As much as free verse will often will follow the pattern of speech, it’s not always intuitive, because written language is not quite the same as spoken.  This is why when you write, you need to listen to it and speak it out, so you know where to make the breaks in lines.   If you make the breaks well, it helps your poem to express itself well.

Line breaks don’t always happen where the sentence end.  but sometimes where a sentence ends the thought does too.  So you need to talk it out, over and over until the right spacing occurs and your poem reads the way it should and conveys the thoughts you want it to.   Experiment and play around with how your free verse lines come out.  Speak them.  Let them roll around as you listen and feel and let them become all the words that you intend them to be. Line by line it will come together.

Officially this is called enjambment: The running-over of a sentence or phrase from one poetic line to the next, without terminal punctuation; the opposite of end-stopped. For example:

the cup
runneth over

The water
green
sparkles like
fish jumping
in the sun

This happens line by line, section by section, figuring out how each thought patten needs to be laid out.  No rules, and yet, much thought and consideration goes into it.   As you read and break your poetry into the lines needs it should resonate with in you with mystery, wonder, suspense and sound.  You will know it when you hear it.  So listen for it, listen well.

Find A Way

May 3, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

The word ADAPT set a chord running through me as taunt as the bowstring on my son’s homemade bow. This was a VERY hard poem to write. So many words and thoughts flooding through my being tonight. I hope they make sense! This season is hard, and despite my frustrations with platitudes offered with actions showing hearts not in the same place as the platitudes offered, I know that God will mind our backs full well. He reminds me daily that he loves me more than sparrows, he knows how to listen to a heart’s cry, and that is good. May he truly be seen!

Find a way, Adapt. A Poem.

Find A Way

The word today,
Adapt they say.
Find a way
This word to say
How in life
It fits the bill
Turn hearts to God
You hope it will.

I’m sorry the word
Pops out
I should have kept
My mouth shut
Not stressing you
Not confusing you
Adding pressure and
Making you want to hide.

I’m sorry my love
I forgot you see
To remember what pressure
What it does to thee.
Oh Guide me Lord
My heart it cries
Let me speak softly
To hide what’s inside.

The platitudes Come
Trust God they say
Everything you know
It will come out okay.
But is the understanding there?
Is there willingness to bend?
To know that what once one could do
Must come to an end?

I try not to fret
To worry what might be
A boy needs friends
It’s so much fun to just be.
Running and talking and
Making much delight.
Distances to drive
They are such a fright.

Mind the dollars
Make the plans
Cut them short
No funds quick at hand.
Regret it flows
Wishing different it was
Wondering what lessons
The Lord has in store.

The words they say are true
God will provide
But sometimes
My stomach clenches
Worry wants to abide.
Trust God they say.
The bible says more.
Those sparrows you see?
God loves you more.

God’s word it seeps
Deep into me still.
Rest assured.
He will help, He will.
Don’t struggle.
Take one day at a time.
Remember you are worth
Much more than a dime.

Seasons come
and Seasons Go.
But the Lord Oh…he’s God
Remember that, NO?
Adapt, be changed
Let your heart be made new
Adapt, be changed
See what he’s doing in you.

The word today,
Adapt they say.
Find a way
This word to say
How in life
It fits the bill
Turn hearts to God
You know it will.

Stuck Fast

April 26, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

One of the meanings of the word stuck is “adhere or cling to a substance or surface”.

You know my hubby is working at McDonald’s for a while. He’s looking to secure a better position, but in the meantime he has a family to feed you know?   Part of his work is to do the grill.

Temperatures rise
Orders come in
Quarter pounders,
Egg McMuffins
Burgers too.

Grill is sizzling
Burgers fry
Tantalizing odours
Fill the air

But hurry scurry
No time for smells
Heat them up
Cook them fast

OUCH!
Oh…that’s hot
Blisters rise
Liquid rises Fast inside

Bandaids handy
Stuck on tight
Keep that blister
Safe inside.

One learns quickly at McD’s that blisters are part of the job, and to keep the worker safe, band-aids are a must.  Uncovered blisters near a high heat source just get worse.  Safety is paramount.  It’s hard work scurrying around in the heat. We’ve learned not to discount the work of the people behind the scenes.

stuck fast, a poem

I have to admit, part of me wants to turn this into a Be stuck on Jesus theme, but it’s not flowing into my head at the moment.   I am sure that other members of the Five Minute Friday community have come up with something more faith related.  🙂   Come join us won’t you?

Turn, a Poem of Change

April 20, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

I saw the word turn come up at the Five Minute Friday page and immediately this song came to mind.

Shortly thereafter this song came to mind

It’s an interesting word isn’t it?  Turn… it’s full of hope and promise.  Something else is waiting, or a good thing is behind you, or waiting for you to discover it.   Ah yes… let us then turn, see what’s waiting won’t we?

Turn, a poem

Turn,

An act of changing direction.
A changing of one’s path.
When one’s perspective has been one way,
and then you see another vantage point
And everything changes.

Like when you have lived only for
yourself.
And then
God makes himself known to you.
and suddenly
You find yourself living for him.

When you have lived as a fisherman
a doctor
a tax collector
a zealot
a thief
a Pharisee
and then Jesus comes along.
Life changed dramatically.

See the Lord
See God clearly
And turn,
Turn and experience
a Whole New way to be.
A way that is BETTER.

The Other, a poem

April 12, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

One of the things the Lord has been impressing upon this past year is to see the other.   To make a point of seeing a situation from another perspective.  It’s been interesting to say the least, I don’t always appreciate the Other you know?

The Other

It was sitting there waiting for me.
The other.
Giving another glimpse
Of a world I had yet to see.

Waiting to announce a pregnancy, hide it for a while.
Why wait? Such joy to be had.
But.. pregnancy is hard for me
What if I lose it?
What if the child is ill.
I need the time…
Oh…the other.

Do this thing, because I said so.
But the youngling questions
If I know why then I’ll want to
Listen all the more.
Does it hurt you to tell me why?
Oh…the other.

Find a job won’t you.
Hurry it up, what’s taking you so long.
But it’s hard you know
There’s THIS that I so long to do.
It’s hard, and it aches, and it so much a part of me.
Oh…the other.

My mom died years ago. My heart aches for her still.
Oh come on, get over it.. all mom’s die.
You grieve, you move on.
But you fail to see
She was my heart. We talked ALL THE TIME.
She knew me so well and would call even before I knew to call her.
Oh….the other.

The other it wants to fill my days
Reminding me to think some more
Showing me that,
that I am to am sometimes
The other.

Fly, Fly Away Free

April 6, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Fly, fly away free

Just go.. fly away cause you know what?

A bird in hand…is a bird petrified out of its mind.  🙂

So let it fly, just fly free.

Those are the words that popped into my head when I saw the word Release.  Miss Kate is so diligent about giving us a word to write on every week.  Come join us won’t you?

Freedom from captivity.

That is what the word release means to me.

To be released is to be let go

Like a boy nailed to a desk, chomping at the bit

Fiercely finishing his work as he awaits the word

“Go, you are finished for the day” and

Like a bolt released from a crossbow speeds away.

Ants to feed, games to play, a dad to touch base with.

Run boy Run

Fly away free!

Yell and shout and bump and fly.

Find a way to express yourself and just be free.

Like that mouse captured by Miss Lizzie

With a squeak and hop twisted out of her grip.

Like the spider.. caught between a wall and a tall menacing woman

Who found a crevice to slide away into.

Run mouse. Hide spider…

You have found release.

Fly, fly away free.

Today I learned a distant friend’s father had passed away.

His son said “Today my father is released.  Able to see the Lord finally, face to face”.

The relief heard.

The pain escaped.

Freedom.

Do you know it?

Has the meaning of Easter changed your life?

Seek it out, find the freedom,

Find the release.

And fly, fly away free.

Fly, fly away free. A word prompt poem.

Settled in Spirit

March 30, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Miss Kate inadvertently posted the Five Minute Friday word prompt late. It happens. This late posting let the word settle run around through my mind and gradually a thought poured out and started forming words around it.    This is the result of that. 🙂

Settled in Spirit
Once upon a time
There was a lonely child
Raised in a family of many
Yet lonely.

Feeling different than anyone around
Thinking different
Knowing the difference
Separated from the rest
By things not quite seen.

Excelling scholastically
Yet understanding not
The people surrounding
Much they did so much a mystery.

Growing, maturing,
Studying
People watching,
Seeking to understand.
The smiles, the frowns,
The hmms, and hahs, so familiar.

What did they mean?
What a shrug combined with a smile signify?
A frown with a tear in the eye?
Was that sorrow or anger?

How does one respond to a hug
when one feels a distance
and doesn't understand
what is meant?

Slowly but surely
Understanding gained
While often confusion in crowds mounts
Introvert by choice
or by necessity?
Anger at self for not understanding
When all around expect it to be.

Over time
Maturity blooms
War rages within
over self-recrimination
Or acceptance.

God stepped in.
Acceptance is given.
Love felt.
A knowing settles deep within.
A spirit of belonging overtakes.
And so

Settled in Spirit one becomes
Warring happens
When forgetfulness occurs
But reminders are presented daily.
Remember.
Loved.
Accepted.
Christ died.
Belonging to God.
Remain.
Settled in Spirit.
