Review: Animals at Night

Animals at Night is a rather cool book if you have a darkroom.  What you want to do read the story on a given page, letting the light hit the picture as you read, and then slip into a darkened room and let the page turn to life right under your eyes.

Using paint that glows in the dark, the pages of this book are brought to life as you sit and read each page.  It’s actually quite fascinating to read, and then slip into a darkened room and see animals that perhaps you hadn’t noticed before spring to life on the pages.

I tried to show the effect, but it simply didn’t work for my camera.

 Each two page spread covers a different biome in the life of animals of the night.

  2. In the forest
  3. At the forest’s Edge
  4. Near the Riverbank
  5. In Fields and orchards
  6. On a country road
  7. On the farm
  8. In the neighbourhood
  9. In the Garde
  10. In the Mountains
  11. At the beach
  12. In the desert
  13. By the pond

The book concludes with an answer page for each of the challenges presented throughout the book.

I found the graphics to be simple, basic forms with the muted colours that you would find at night.  

Predominately the pages where filled with information about various night dwelling creatures.

My Thoughts:
My husband (fellow with a sensitive sniffer) mentioned the book has a bit of a smell to it.  Something to keep in mind if you have children sensitive to odours.
I thought it was a very neat book, lots of factoids about a good group of animals, not all were animals I expected to find in such a book.
It would definitely be a great book to add to a study on night time animals, different biomes and bio-luminescence.

Excuse, a Poem

Today, in the midst of a busy day, following up two weeks of not having a lot of fun with my body, when I saw the word excuse these words came to mind.   The lad and I are going through the heidelberg catechism right now and this morning we were reminded on God’s command to love others as much as we love ourselves.  Not always such as easy thing to do.  To put the care of others to the same measure as yourself. So easy to make the excuses, or shift the thoughts to yourself.

The word is excuse, 
The word for the day.
I wonder I wonder
What I’ll have to say.

My mind is a blank
A canvas you see
Muddled by pain
As big as the sea.
I’m often reminded 
Perspective to take
My situation isn’t as
Bleak as I could make.
People face hunger
Others face war
Some have an illness 
for which is no cure. 
A couple of weeks
A wait for some tests
When in the meantime
I find time for rest.
Is nothing compared
The death of a Son.
Who by his sacrifice
Caused the battle be won.
So complain not I’ll try
Perspective to keep
And always remember
For OTHERS to weep.

Book Study Choices

So here’s the scoop, you know how I went to a writers’ conference?  Had fun, bit overwhelming, but overall it was FUN!  And…. I’ve recently finished reading A Pearl Seeker and have been wondering what my next book project should be.  

I picked up a writing book there (Writing Tools) and  recently Raincoast sent me a book called “Pep Talks for Writers” and then I have a book that I got called On Being a Writer.  I looking through these books I thought, hey…might be fun to do a series on writing.  


Thought maybe, I’ll do it on Thursday, and just kinda skip around bit. I’ll learn something, you’ll learn something and that’s a wonderful thing is is not?  Should be fun especially when I was looking through Pep Talks and came across this line that I like

Neat line eh? It spurs on my thoughts, about writing how I want to write and not doing what others expect.   It’s good to have that self-assurance eh?  Can’t say I’m completely there yet, but ah… I want to be!  🙂

Of course a bit of a monkey in the wrench is this book: Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. This book is tugging on my heart strings as well…so it’s honestly really hard to decide what to do eh?   

Maybe, ah, just maybe I’ll have to just share from whatever book grabs my fancy each week?  Hard to decide, when I have so many options to choose from eh?

Review: The Chicken Chick’s Guide to Backyard Chickens

Little known fact here on the blog… I LOVE chickens.  I think chickens are just such interesting critters, and when I was young I used to tie them up and take them for walks.  🙂   Go figure, I was a real farm girls.   This Guide to Backyard Chickens is a MUST HAVE if you are planning on raising chickens at all.   It is a thoroughly, helpful book.

 So what do you get with the Guide to Backyard Chickens?
12 chapters covering everything from why to keep chickens (honestly.. why not???) to their health, breeds, eggs, and more.  Ms. Mormino sets out to write a comprehensive guide to keeping and tending well a flock of backyard egg layers.   This book contains all you need to know about tending your hens as part of one of the fastest growing hobbies in North America today.

Oh, you know, it’s really hard for me to decide which of the many pictures I took of this book to show you.  I don’t want to inundate you.  🙂 Pictures of chickens (woot woot).

Or pictures of how well the text is balanced by pictures.

To the thoroughness with which she (the chicken chick) treats her subject.  Know your laws, keep the hens healthy, know what breeds suit your area and lifestyle, and just so much more.   I adored all the helpful and do it yourself hints found within the 180 pages of this tome.

 An extremely helpful volume that will be at your fingertips throughout your journey as a person keeping backyard chickens.  I know I’ll be keeping it… cause who knows…maybe one day I will have a flock of my own.  🙂 (yes, it is still a dream)

Canada Book: Women Who Dared

I have to admit, I’m cheating a bit, I’m putting this book (a review) in on my Canada Book day.  Why?  Because at least one Canadian is included!!!!   Women Who Dared.  Admittedly, most come from the States, but I’m betting the author comes from there as well… so it’s a natural thing to focus on your own land don’t you know?  🙂  A smattering of other countries are included as well such as France, Japan, Mexico etc.

Anyway, this is a NEAT book about women who dared… daredevils, adventurers, rebels…women who dared to be different…and that’s a  most excellent thing, don’t you think?  To look at a job and say “I can do that” and not let traditional gender roles stop you on your path.


What kind of women are in this book?
Aviators, swimmers, trick riders, cosmonauts, rescuers, detectives, marines, martial artists, miners, climbers and so much more.   Women can do amazing things!  

The book is divided into three categories: Daredevils, Adventurers, and Rebels.   A handy index is included in the book to help quickly find a person you are interested in learning more about.  Each biography includes where they are from, lifespan, a glimpse into their lives.

Each person is given a two page spread, one side showing an illustration of the woman, and other giving a brief biography.  

One person who interested me was “Keiko Fukuda”.  She was a woman interested in Judo, she comes from Japan and started learning Judo when there was a separation in the sport.  Men could achieve 10 levels, women allowed only five.  She didn’t let that stop her.  She learned her sport well, so well in fact that in time she was allowed to achieve the highest level for both men and women in her sport…the red belt, the 10th dan.  She is the ONLY woman to have done so.   Imagine the grit it would have taken for her to stick it through!   Good to be inspired eh?

My Thoughts:
This would be an interesting one per week study do with any child, but particularly any girl who isn’t sure what to do with her life.  This book would be sure to give her all sorts of inspiration as she looks down her life path.  Just might shake out some new ideas for her eh?

Hymn Study: O Perfect Love

 I had thought about posting this one last week, it’s a song I’ve heard at weddings, but it was part of our remembrance day service last week. But if you read the words to this hymn, it’s talking about God’s love for his people, and our love returned to him. It speaks also to the love between two people who will be joined together in marriage.  Love from God, holding them together, as they love each other and love God back.  It’s a popular wedding hymn.


Written by Dorothy F. Gurney, this song came to her:

It was Sunday ev­en­ing [at Pull Wyke, Win­der­mere, Eng­land] and we were en­joy­ing a time of hymn sing­ing. A song that was par­ti­cu­lar­ly en­joyed by all of us was O Strength and Stay, the tune to which was a fav­o­rite of my sis­ter. As we fin­ished sing­ing this hymn, some­one re­marked, ‘What a pi­ty the words of this beau­ti­ful song should be un­suit­a­ble for a wed­ding!’ My sis­ter turned to me and chal­lenged, ‘What is the use of a sis­ter who com­pos­es po­et­ry if she can­not write new words to a fa­vo­rite tune? I would like to use the tune at my wed­ding.’ I picked up a hymn­book and said, ‘If no one will dis­turb me, I will go into the lib­ra­ry and see what I can do.’ With­in 15 min­utes I was back with the group and read­ing the words I had jot­ted down. The writ­ing of the words was no ef­fort what­ev­er af­ter the in­i­tial idea came to me of the two­fold aspect of per­fect un­ion, love and life. I feel that God helped me write this song.  (source)
Interesting eh?   I never knew the story behind this song was to find words more suitable for a wedding, to please a sister.  🙂 
Dorothy Gurney lived 1858-1932.  She was a daughter of an english clerygman.  She was born a Blomfield and she wrote this song while still single. Later J. Barnaby wrote a tune for her words which has become more popular.

Recipe: Jam Pork Fry

Today I confused my sweetheart.  He had this thought I was going to make honey garlic pork and here I was adding stuff to pork in a pan and not making a marinade.   I told him I wasn’t making that but was replicating a meal I used to make when I wasn’t hungry but needed to eat something.

This is what I did.  MIND… no real measurements happened here as I was just tossing stuff in.   I’ll give approximates where I can.


One pork tenderloin cut into bite sized pieces.
Toss that into a fry pan,
add  
Thin jam jelly mixed half/half with water.   About… 1/4 cup jelly.  (I used beet jam)
3 tsp of minced garlic
Soy sauce…I aimed for about a tbsp but ended up with about 2  tbsps.
1/4 of a medium onion diced.
add some seasoning: I used parsley, oregano, montreal steak spice and salt. But you know.. add whatever you like, everyone has different taste buds.
Let that cook a spell.
Then add
About 4 tbsp of a whole berry jam…. I used Saskatoon berry today but have used gooseberry and blueberry in the past.
add 1/2 diced apple just before it’s cooked through.
Let it cook down a bit as you want it to be saucy not overly runny. 

Give it a taste test and then add more seasonings if needed.   This part was fun today as I had my lad taste testing it with me.  We ended up adding a bit of lemon pepper and then deemed it good.

How to serve?
In the past I’ve done it on bread (like a sandwich), or served over a bed of rice or mashed taters.  Everytime I make it, it’s a touch different, depends on the species used.

Today I served it over sliced skin on boiled potatoes.
