Hymn Study: Speak, O Lord

Oh… A long while back now.. before I was married, I went to a women’s conference in the States.  I had a great time but it was pre-tablet days and by the end of the conference I was going batty.  Too much sitting, not enough doing.  It was a great conference for all that.

At the conference I was introduced to The Getty’s.  Oh.. their music just flooded my soul with energy and praise to God. 


Anyways, when I was thinking what in the world can I do for truth, I couldn’t think of a single hymn I do for truth, and then I remembered this song by the Getty’s.

Written as a song for your pastor as he presents God’s word, and for people as they hear the word of the Lord presented to them.

Review: Overboard!

Overboard! Is part of the Survivor Diaries series written by Terry Lynn Johnson.   In this book Travis and his family, and their guide, get thrown into icy cold, chaotic waves when their boat capsizes. Will they manage to survive?

Black and white pictures are interspersed among the pages of this book, which help bring the story to life.  I would say the reading level is geared for grades 3 and 4.

I liked how the author interjected survival techniques into the storyline. This is a great way to teach children how to stay safe and survive in different situations they may find themselves in,  in particular what happens if they fall into icy cold water how will they survive?

We learned about the HELP technique, the importance of keeping your skin out of the water and having something to help you float.  Most of all, if you can keep yourself calm and your wits about you, you can survive.

The book closes with a section where the author clearly outlines the steps you need to stay alive in icy cold water. It was
well written in simple language that anyone could understand.

What I appreciated most about the book is how the two youth involved helped each other, figuring out what needed to be done, overcoming fears and simply doing what was necessary to survive.

Hold, as from the Scripture

Hold, as from the Scripture.  Reading through these verses gives a better thought as to what the word HOLD means before the Lord. We are to hold fast to the Lord and his promises, as the Lord will hold fast to us.

 You shall fear the Lord your God. You shall serve him and hold fast to him, and by his name you shall swear.  Deut. 10:20

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.  Gen. 2:24

I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go; my heart does not reproach me for any of my days. Job 27:4

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.  Psalm 16:5
 

“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. Psalm 91:14

Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matt 14:31
As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience. Luke 8:51

Owning your own story

This weekend I am at a writers conference called breathe.

It was a bit of a challenge getting down here, but God has been so good, from little things like a road sign in just the right place that helped me to know turn here!   The friendliness of strangers willing to help a gal out when she got turned around, and more.

The kindness of God in providing kindness in others sometimes overwhelms me.

I got to meet Carol from the crew, surprise surprise she looks younger than I expected.  Sweet kind lady just like I had hoped for based on her writing.

Anyways, the theme for this week’s five minute Friday is story, and you know what people are asking all over the place this weekend?  What’s your story, what do you write?

I honestly feel a bit awkward saying I don’t have a book, that I like to write poetry and short stories.  Makes me wonder if there is room for someone like me in the market and if maybe I shouldn’t have come.   These doubts assail me.

And then I stop and think, my story is my own and just as valid as anyone else’s and that’s not a bad thing.  Do I have a full book in me?  I don’t know.  I know I have devotionals bursting out of me. That I think I have something from God to say.  But I have a lot of uncertainty living inside of me…and that’s part of my story too.  Right now I am not sure what to do with that,  …the uncertainty i mean.  For at least, I’m getting more tools in my hand so I know what to do when the time is right.

Fun Friday: Mudworks Part One

Did you know that I am teaching an art class at my homeschool groups Co-op days?   The class is called Mudworks.

I have this cool book (called Mudworks) that I did a art book post on… hold on while I find that. Ah, here it is.  Anyways, when I looked at this book I thought, how much run would it be to do this with a mixed ages class, so when HOPE days came up  I said SURE, I’ll do this!  🙂


21 kids in my class!!!!!   It’s loud and noisy and a whole lot of fun…though admittedly… if I don’t really understand a recipe in the book, it lends me well to mental confusion…but that’s part of the fun of the class right?

Anyways, for day one we worked with…. MUD!  🙂

I grabbed up some garden dirt and offered the kids a challenge… see how much water you need to add to one cup of dirt to make it workable.   You need to be able to build a sculpture from the dirt.  I was ATTEMPTING to teach a bit of the scientific method but forgot one important factor… 6 year olds just want to be play in the mud…. 🙂

We also made cotton ball and flour sculptures but I don’t really know how they turned out…they had to dry.  So time will tell eh?   And hey…. it’ll be a post for another day.

Pearl Seeker: Seek to be Just A Christian

Know Before Whom You Stand. this was a message from a mantel the Germans tried to destroy during the night of Glass.  During the world war.  They were unable to do so.  This was a reminder to the Jewish leader to always remember whom he served.  Question left with… do I know whom I serve?  What reminds me of that?

I have to admit,
this chapter and I just didn’t sync.  It felt like it jumped around and I
just couldn’t follow it, so this is what I picked out.


The question we have before us is this…what does it mean to be a Christian, JUST a Christian.   

We aren’t forced to learn about God, we aren’t forced to do his will, so what makes us a Christian?

The question I suppose is this, do we want to stay JUST a Christian or do we want our Christianity to matter, to make a difference?   How do we want to show our love for God?  But being lukewarm, not really caring to know more?   Should we then query if we truly are Christians then?   If we don’t act like God matters (by spending time in his word, going about his business etc) then are we truly Just a Christian?

Make being Just a Christian a pivotal part of who you are as a believing person. Be a person of action, of obedience and submission to what he asks of you. 

We can choose to obey God, to be submissive to his will, or we can chose to not be submissive to him, to follow the path that Satan would have us.  And having this awareness, even if we mess things up, when we turn back to the Lord he is rich in mercy.  Quick to forgive us and welcome us back.   So be “Just” a Christian, willing and active, obedient to his call, learning more about him all the time.

Trust

Trust

Trust me he says
Trust me to know what is best.
Trust me,
Let it Go.
Know that I have this under control.
Let it Go.  Seriously.  
You do not have to be in control.

And yet I sit
I fight
I hold on tight.
This is my worry
My fear
My thing and it’s MINE.
You can’t have it.

Again it comes.
Let it go.
It’s not good for you this thing.
Let it go.
Trust me.
I have a better thing for you.

Slowly, loudly
Fighting all the way
I let it go.
and I discover a truth.
There is a better thing
there is contentment in what I have
A joy in discovery
that, that other thing, 
the thing I held on to ever so hard
Wasn’t good for me.

It’s a joy.
A relief 
A total surprise.
that indeed he knew better.

And so slowly
reluctantly at times
I learn to
Trust
because I am learning
what hope truly is.
