Review: Gobi: A Little Dog With a Big Heart

Imagine, a hot day, you are in a race, you want to win.
You have rules to help you run better just as every runner does.  
The end is clear, run smart, run fast, run to win. 
Then you discover a small, furry bump in the road.

                                                What’s a fellow to do?

And thus the story of Gobi is told.  

Through the eyes of one little dog, and his person.  Because you know… that runner guy became her person.  🙂

This is a very cute book, the dog is so well illustrated, her personality just comes to life in the pages of this short picture book.   

Gobi tells part of the story, and then Dion tells part of the story.   Always showing both sides of the story making this a very cute book to share with your children.

The story of how Gobi got to her new home in Scotland is included at the close of the book.   From what I understand, this book is the children’s version of another book which tells the full story of Dion and Gobi.    This version is sure to delight the children in your life.   

Once again, I loved the illustrations, can’t you just see the determination in the runners and the joy is that little dog?

Hymn Study: Come, Now is the Time to Worship

Worship is the first word of the October write 31 days challenge.  I had a hoot last year doing this so I thought I’d try it again this year.  I might try to do all hymns…but doubt that will work.  🙂  But this first word had this song immediately running through my head, so I figured I’d share it with you.  🙂

31 Days of October! Free Writes!

So… 

It’s October.. pretty cool huh?  Here in Ontario we are starting to see the trees turn colour, the nights are getting colder and the days brisk.  It’s good weather we are having.

AND.. it’s time for the 31 days of October.  Some folks are writing on one topic for the month, others are responding to prompts.   BUT we are all aiming to write every day for the whole month of October.

Review: When I Was A Turkey

I have to admit when I first saw this book when I was a turkey I thought what kind of a crazy character lives with turkeys, like seriously?!?!?!  And if I’m to be perfectly honestly, I didn’t even want to read about it, who wants to read about crazy people?  I chose to read it anyways, and found, much to my surprise, he wasn’t as crazy as I thought.  🙂  Good thing eh?   AND I was so surprised by this book I talked about it with friends.  

As a wildlife photographer, for Joe Hutto, raising these turkeye gave him the perfect opportunity to become intimately aware of how turkeys live and gave him ample opportunity to take pictures that otherwise we wouldn’t have.

Throughout this book you will find multiple pictures of turkeys in various stages of their life as well as pencil drawing of the turkeys and the wildlife and landscape surrounding them.

Joe says in the beginning of the book,

Nature always proves to be more interesting and complicated than we expect. As a naturalist and anthropologist., I am familiar with uncovering the science behind experiments in nature. What I didn’t expect was finding such an intriguing new family among the wild turkeys; together we shared a world of excitement and wonder. This is my story. I hope you enjoy it.


It was interesting to read all he learned about turkeys.  Learning how they sleep, what they eat, how intelligent they were, and how they acted if separated from their family. He learned how integral he was to their well-being.  He learned to copy their speech and in doing so learning how varied it was, and that they are surprisingly sensitive to colour.

All in all I was very pleased with this book, even becoming sad as he lost some of his beloved turkeys, sometimes for reasons known (predation) or for reasons unknown.. when they died unexpectedly.   His horror when Turkey Boy, the bird closest to him decided he was a rival…and needing to beat him off to save his own life.  Joe became very bonded to these turkeys and it was hard for him when they matured and started to go their own way, neighbours letting him know when his hens started having poults. 

Joe learned much and showed us much in his two year adventure with the turkeys.   I can’t say I still really understand his connection to them, but it was an interesting read, and I learned more about wild turkeys… which was the intent.  🙂

A Dependable Trinity.

I was talking with my son the other day, he mentioned what he was learning in his devotions (about the Trinity of God) and I talked with him about what I was learning… God always having our back, minding and protecting us.    We talked about how that connected, as when I saw this word prompt late last night I’ve been pondering the connections between the two.

God, Three in One
A Triune God.
Every day the same.
A solidified unity,
a constant support built in.
God the Father
Creator, sustainer,
Lover of my soul.
Father of the Beloved.
The one who calls me to his own.
God the Son.
Jesus Christ the Lord. 
The Word, The Light,
Died for my sins, 
Coverer of all wrongs.
Beloved of the Father
Leader by Example.
God the Holy Spirit,
Comforter, Guide, Convictor,
One who dwells within
One who minds my heart and mind
Helping me remember whose I am.
Remembering the Triune God
Reminds me of the strength behind 
the promises
That vengeance is his.
Mine is but to mind and obey.
To follow the nudges, and guidance,
and words left written for me to read.
The Triune God… Dependable.
Always.

Pearl Seeker: Seek Second Chances

I have to admit, the opening section to this chapter had me wanting to argue with it.   I understood her point… we have to be mindful that the stuff in our lives doesn’t become more important to us than golf…but at the same time I wanted to argue saying.. but someone has to do the laundry and run the errands, we can’t all run out to conferences and the mission field.  Someone has to mind the gates at home.    It just makes me wonder sometimes… if we all sat at the feet of Jesus and just listened and learned from him….who would get the work done?   Who would help Martha?


We can’t just learn .. we have to DO as well. 

So I guess that’s where the dichotomy comes in right?   How easy it is to think.. I have to do this that or the other thing to do, that it’s so easy to get distracted from the need to do the learning first, so that we can be about the doing.

It’s easy for me to say .. hey…those things you do for pleasure… be mindful they don’t take over your life.  Like the fellow in her intro who loved golf so much he was missing out on the rest of life that God had given him.   I love to read.. and sometimes I’d rather stay home and read a good book than I would want to go to church… so it’s choices to make.  We need to make them in GOD’s favour, not our own.   I frequently tell my lad, Satan has done an excellent job of making us a very selfish people, focused on our own wants and needs.  We need to as believers actively fight against that. 

Thomas Aquinas tells us this: “The things we love tell us what we are”.

So what does my life tell others what I love?   What it does tell others about what you love?

Do you know that the Lord waits patiently for us to come to him?  To want to learn from him?   He comes over and over and over.. waiting patiently.  Won’t you make a choice?  A choice to give up that thing that right now causes you pleasure and has you get a greater pleasure…learning of the Lord.  Learn from him, live out what you learn, so that you can eagerly tell others more about the one you claim to love.    Show your love to the Lord.   Learn from him.

Don’t Pick Fights Over Little Things

Romans 14: 1-12 is our reading today. 


As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.
Oh… in today’s society, how are this is eh?   To have someone new come to church and not want to argue with them over their faith?   Paul is clear here… don’t argue over opinions with someone weak in the faith.    What should you do then?  

2 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3 Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 4 Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
This lack of arguing with them stems from this: not passing judgement on each other.  The weaker not to judge the stronger, the stronger in the faith to not judge the weaker.   

5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself.
One person says Saturday is a day of rest and worship, another says “Sundays in the day to rest and worship”.  Honestly… does it matter?   Is the person involved intent on worshipping the Lord?   Then let it be.  It’s shouldn’t be a bone of contention.   Honour the Lord.  Give thanks to him.   Do you see?  It’s not salvation issues Paul is talking about.. it’s just stuff.. like should a sanctuary be carpeted, should you use praise and worship or only hymns.   The thing is.. be convinced in your own mind.. but don’t pick fights with people or judge or despise them over it.   That’s not our place.  It isn’t.  

8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.
10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11 for it is written,

“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
    and every tongue shall confess to God.”
12 So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.
The question to us is this…are we aware that living or dying.. we are to do it to the Lord.  We are to hold us ourselves accountable to the Lord, not to each other.. to the LORD.  That’s the end result of it all.
