Art Book: Kawaii Doodle Class

Kawaii Doodle Class is a fun softcover book, that was a pleasure to review.  This book is all about creating cute images from food, drink, nature, monsters, everyday items and more. Zainab Khan shows us how to give these items a cute outlook on life and faces with character. 

Zainab Khan takes items you find in everyday life (plus monsters) and turns them into cute creations in a step by step manner.

 Khan shows us the difference that changing line shape and colour means to the creations we build.

Page after page is filled with delightful creations to make your doodles into items of joy and stories waiting to be told.

Khan closes this book with some fun search and find puzzles.

These pages also give the author a chance to show case how all the doodles can fit together.  I look at them all and see how easily these creations could become characters in a story, just from drawing a few simple lines.  None of the lines in this book are overly complicated, anyone with a will to try can learn from this artist.   Simple lines and basic colours makes for fun, cute creations from anything you can find around you.

My Hope

What is your only hope in life and in death?

That we are not our own but belong, body and soul, both in life and death, to God and to our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Have you ever stopped to think about what this catechism question means?  What the answer means?

Our HOPE, our ONLY hope, lies in the hands of God and the actions of his son, Jesus Christ.  We belong to him.

He (as in the triune God) OWNS us.
We belong to him.

Not ourselves.
We aren’t, ultimately, once we know the Lord God, responsible for ourselves.  We don’t own ourselves, God does.  We belong to him.

Think about that.
Think about what it means to belong to someone so great he surpasses the universe.
And we.. we belong to him!!!

Not only in life, but also in death.
Not just our souls but also our bodies. 
Everything, God doesn’t leave a single thing out.

Doesn’t that give you hope as well?   A hope that transcends the now?

Faith is Key, Romans 14.

Romans 14:13-23, 10 verses to peruse today.

Therefore… that’s a connector word.  Connecting one passage with another. Remember that God is the one that judges?  We can’t judge each other, we are all under God’s authority.    So what should we do instead? 
13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 
Make a decision to do this: To not put stumbling blocks in front of each other. Don’t hinder each other in our journey of faith. 


It’s not an easy thing though you know?   Paul gives the example of the type of food we eat or drink… One might consider it clean and another unclean.  If one of your number considers it wrong to do, then don’t do it.  Who are you to cause another to stumble or to wander in their faith?   

14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.
Remember…what’s our first priority.  Are we serving God?   Are we about the building up of the Kingdom of God?  Are we focusing on righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit?  Pursue these things.   Don’t focus on the divisions and the trivialities… focus on the big picture…the building up of the Kingdom of God. 

20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. 
Again see this truth… do not do things to cause your fellow believer to stumble in their faith. 

I have to admit, I struggle with this.
I used to work for an organization that insisted that if I was out in public doing my own thing, and if I had been one to enjoy a beer, if I was on my own time and someone came up from work (I worked in special needs) i would immediately have to stop doing what I was doing or I would be fired or subject to a disciplinary hearing.    I remember thinking… how incredibly unfair is that?!?!?!    I still think that way. Institutional demands of one brand of thinking… there needs to be room for faith to grow and become stronger.

On the same token though, if I knew someone who was struggling with addiction issues, I wouldn’t choose to tempt faith by flaunting whatever they are addicted to in their path.  I want to be a lending hand to help them on their way.
 
 22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But
whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not
from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.
Faith is the key element you see?   If you know by faith that God allows a thing, and you know you aren’t contravening scripture, then do it.  BUT if you have any doubt at all.. don’t do it because you aren’t operating from a faith stand-point.
  
Cause you know ultimately… we answer to God for how we live out our faith. No one else can answer for us.  All we need to do is this…not cause another to stumble in their faith, and to live out our faith as best we can.   That’s it.  No passing judgement.

Again I find this hard.  How do you challenge another without SEEMING to pass judgement?  For instance, those who say you can live in a manner that is sinful, and yet they are firmly convinced that how they want to live isn’t sinful, that it’s just a misunderstanding.   How does one gently encourage them to reexamine scripture?  How does one do this without sitting in judgement?  It’s such a fine line and I’m not sure I always know where it is.   You know what I mean?

Canada Book: Canada Counts

Ready to learn some facts about Canada?   Have a child learning their numbers?   How about combining two lessons in one?

Canada Counts…learn to count from 1-20 as well as 37, 1867, and more.  Counting is so much more than the first few numbers, it’s learning and seeing how they all fit together.

Interesting Facts.  It was an good connection for me learning more about the Famous Five, as I had just learned about the famous five at the WW1 and Canada exhibit we were just at.  Connections built eh?

Counting!  And not just the basics of 1-20, but all kinds of numbers that are important to us as Canadians.  We learn history within our counting!  🙂

Provincial information, even as we count.   Good to learn these important facts. And to see our flags alongside.

How to Write a Book Review

Anyone who reads my  blog knows I enjoy sharing books with my readers.  I find it a hoot to find neat books or curriculum to share with you.   But how does one write a review?   

I know that over time I have figured out how I tend to like do a review.  But what makes the meat of a review?  What makes a good book review?  What makes a book review different from a book report?


Writing a book review is not just about summarizing.  Honestly.. anyone can summarize a book.  For instance: Harry Potter’s series could be simply summarized as “Bullied kid makes good, Bad wizard beaten.”.    Doesn’t really tell you anything about the series but it was summarized.  🙂

A book review is also not a book report but can contain some elements of a book report (as you often do tell something about the book) but unlike a book report in a book review you do NOT give away the ending or tell all you know about the plot of characters. 

A review delves into the book, giving some summary, but mostly is critiquing and offering your opinion about it, along with some quotes. 

There are two main types of book reviews: Descriptive and Critical Reviews. Descriptive reviews are predominately what I do on this blog, giving essential information about a book, but describing the basic story, telling you what I think about it, elements that are contained within and whether I think it completes it’s purpose. If I know the author’s thinking in creating that book I’ll let you know that as well.  For some books I’ll pull quotes out that caught my attention. 

Critical reviews describe and evaluate the book, based on literary and historical standards. It will compare a book with another, work with the author’s intent (if stated) and tends to used with more academic books. The text will be used as part of the evaluation. 

Doing a book review, gives you the opportunity to analyze a book, to speak to it’s strong points, as well as point out the weaker aspects.   It allows you to apply a personal touch, such as “I really appreciated the way the author did…..” 

How you write your review can depend on your audience. Knowing what your audience is, can help you present a book more effectively.  For instance, if your audience is a bunch of moms looking for a good book to read with their littles, you would write your review differently than to a more academic crowd. 

Remember: a book review asks you to analyze a book.  You are thinking about what you are reading, if it meets its audience, it’s strengths and weaknesses, and if it does what the author intended.  

You will need to let your audience know some basic facts about the book, like the author, size, publisher and what not.  Doing this pins down exactly what book you are reviewing, include the edition number if there is one.  If there are special features like maps, resource section, etc.

Things you might wish to include in your book review would be:
– did the book meet your expectations?  Explain.
– did a quote grab your attention – include it, add your thoughts if relevant
– what audience is this book intended for?
– did you learn anything new?  any important lessons?  Any cautions to add?
– graphics from the book (or based on it)
– who would like this book?
– talking about the author, awards etc.

When you review a book, make sure you review the book in front of you, not the book you wished the author had written.

If it’s an awesome book, say so… but by the same token, if it’s an average, say so , or if it’s an awful book say so…but do so kindly, the author did their best and their efforts should be honoured.

Tell, a poem of relationships

 Tell… oh my… I see this word,and you know what I want to belt out?

GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN over the hills and every where!   BUT the question is this…
Should I belt it out right now when Hubby and I are busy chatting?   
I THINK NOT.

Wouldn’t be polite you know.  Nor kind, nor showing empathy, nor upbuilding of relationship betwixt the two of us. 

Ergo, thinking of the word tell now that we are finished chatting, has me thinking what does it speak to us about marriage or even just relationships?


Tell

Talk
Words between each other.
Words that seek to understand.
Words that seek to inform.
Words that speak to heart matters. 

Each
Each person matters.
Each person has a say.
Each person is important.
Each needs to put the other first.
Each needs to love the other as they would love themselves.
Each needs to be prepared to give way.

Life
Speak life to each other.
Spread the joy of life.
Laugh and talk and be at peace.
Working to build the life within. 

Love
Is the building block
The centre.
The action that informs
of the feeling of love being built
Day by day. 
The love that starts from the the love
that God holds for us.
