Highlights of the Week May 14-20

 In no particular order, some of the highlights of the week

Hubby preached a sermon in this church again.

New roof put up on one of the rabbitry buildings.   I had gone into the rabbitry on Wednesday or Thursday this week to do something and spotted one of my girls panting, so promptly removed the winter covering tarp.  This necessitated a building of a wooden roof.   We’ve done tarps one them for the past few years, and found last year the tarps were ripping.  This one was the worst so we did it first, I hope to do the other in two weeks.   I put the lattice sides on it last year and it greatly improved airflow which was a good thing.    Good to have the rabbits cooler again. We worked as a family to put it all together… cutting, drilling, moving etc.  busy hard work.  Hubby put up a “thing” to help with taking the bed off the truck as well…that was hard work man…digging post holes…he has way too many blisters.

We’ve been working our way through the human body and we often add videos.  Currently we are on the teeth.  So we watched what the lad said “this was a good video mom, I learned a lot and do a bunch of things wrong”.  We totally ignored all the product placement stuff.

Working on our Physics STEM kit.  We learned about plumb lines and the center of gravity.   It was rather neat to teach about how a person’s center of gravity changes how they move and how that affects doing things like Karate, adding stability and such like.   Seeing the practical use of science in everyday life was a “wow” moment for the lad and provoked great discussion.

Working our way through the Hawaiian Frog from ArtAchieve.  Next week we are going to add colour to him.  Hopefully he’ll turn out well, I’m a bit concerned that I made him too small.  The lad wasn’t ready for me to take a picture of his rendition.

Review: Your Next 24 Hours

 Do you ever struggle with knowing how you can express kindness to others?   Your Next 24 hours:one day of kindness can change everything, is loaded with ideas about how to express kindness for others…. from seeing the actions others have taken, to simply listing off ideas you might wish to pursue. 

Twenty Two chapters contained in 167 pages, each chapter is short and written around a central idea.  A variety of quotes are given from the bible as well as from people throughout the ages.  Examples of kind people are provided from all walks of life, from the ordinary joe to politicians to actors.

I love the lists of ideas….some are ones I hadn’t thought of before.   Each chapter has it’s own list, generally around the topic theme.

Each chapter starts off with a quote that has something do to with the chapter.   I found the quotes were often enough to make me think, setting the stage well for the following chapter.

I
won’t say that this is a particularly Christian book, although it is
produced by Baker Books.  Quotes from the bible are given the same
relative importance as quotes from anywhere else.

Although
I agree with the premise that through kindness we can change a lot in
our neighbourhood and country, if we don’t have the grounding in Christ,
our kindness toward others will ultimately not change the world.

In the end, if you want to read a book that helps you come up with different ways for you to show kindness to others, this book is chalk full of them.   Great ideas, innovative plans, and some tried and true ones.    It covers everything from environmental concerns, personal involvement, how to be generous with individuals or groups, and just how to be MORE than yourself.   Being kind, just because you can, in whatever way you can discover.

26 Reasons to love Homeschooling

I got to thinking about that and randomly wrote down the letters of the alphabet as I thought and started filling things in.. before you know it I had a whole list of things I enjoy about homeschooling.

  • Annette and the lad, learning together
  • beauty found in unexpected places
  • Canada, using this land as a basis of study
  • documentaries on the tube
  • experiments
  • field trips
  • going out when we want
  • house based business, small business opportunities,
  • information to be shared with others
  • joking around
  • karate works for phys ed class
  • leaps in knowledge
  • minecraft becomes a part of schooling
  • new materials
  • other people – friends, teachers, family
  • Pokemon go inspires exercise and learning opportunities
  • queens, kings overthrown, a love of history
  • rabbits, robots, religion
  • stem and steam is fun hands on learning
  • teatowels, dishes, laundry…all part of schooling
  • umbrellas…learning how so much is connected
  • victories in learning!!!!
  • wondering what we will learn next
  • xiphoid process – learning where this is
  • yellow land and green skies…we can do art how we please
  • zero needs to pack a lunch worrying about the allergies needs of others

Five Minute Friday: Team

Join us this week over at Kate’s blog as we join together of the word prompt TEAM.

3, 2, 1 Go

Team.
It’s hard you know.
To be part of a team.

A team requires working with other people.
I hated team sports as a  child.
Trying to figure out where I fit in best.
Learning quickly that I would always be chosen last or next to last.

I could never figure them out well, and
It seems I am raising a lad with those same lack of skills.
Give us an individual sport and it works much better.
Competing against oneself.

But I have learned as I watched my lad,
that even individual sports have a team component.
The striving to be like others.
The working together to show you have learned a new skill.

I see that and then I look at my own life.
And I see the times when I am part of a team.
When I help at things like Co-op days.
When I have whole families over so my son can play with others.

It’s hard sometimes when you’d rather not.
When it’s easy just to be an introvert.
and not be part of a team,
But it’s a learning growing calling thing.

The Lord calls us to be more than we are.
He promises us his everlasting support.
He promises that he won’t ask us to do something,
that won’t end up being an okay thing for us to.

Consider this.
The Lord God calls us to be family.
To be a part of a working unit.
A body.   A team.

The strong with the weak.
Weak becoming strong as they
are supported and aided.
A body.  A Team.

That’s what we are part of…
even as we remain individuals set on
meeting a standard.
The Team helps.

What does it mean to Create, a #fmfparty post

The word prompt for five minute Friday this past week was create.

Simple Definition of create

  • : to make or produce (something) : to cause (something new) to exist
  • : to cause (a particular situation) to exist
  • : to produce (something new, such as a work of art) by using your talents and imagination 

Think about that for a moment, to create is to cause something new to be made.   One can create a poem, a piece of art, a new start in life in someone struggling, a business, a lesson plan, a play, and more. 

Have you ever paused to consider where that act of creation comes from?

The Bible tells us that in the VERY VERY BEGINNING God.. God created the heavens and the earth and everything that dwells within it.  (Genesis 1 and 2).  In the process of creation, God created us as the pinnacle of his creation.

When he made us, he made us in his likeness.  Think about what that means for a minute.

Take my boy for instance.  EVERYONE who sees him says “you look like your father”  (and he does).  BUT he has my sensitivity and love of animals, and he likes to garden (GO FIGURE).   So as much as my boy looks like he is made in the image of his father, he’s also made in the image of his mother…  Two different aspects, one external image.

When God made us in his image, he didn’t just go for looks, he also went for WHO HE IS.

Our God is a supremely creative (just look at the world around us), and he is WAY more than we are.  He is. he’s God, not man.

We get our creativity from him. 

So as you go out and create, remember what spawned that creativity, that ability you have to create a child, a piece of art, a business… remember where it really comes from.   The one that created you in the first place.

Haven, a Five Minute Friday inspired Post

Kate over at Heading Home hosts Five Minute Friday, a weekly word prompt.   A group of folks gather once a week to give their thoughts, in about five minutes, on a given word prompt that changes weekly.   Everyone comes up with something different it seems.

I have to admit, I’ve been pondering this word prompt for a couple of days now…Trying to think what the word haven means to me.   It’s not an easy word.

And then…I thought of my front garden.
How it’s an overgrown mess….but of how a wee child stopped and saw my cat hiding in the tulips.
And then she saw my chicken, and my bunny and….

She talked and pointed it out to her mama, and her mama pointed out the flowers, and bugs that I have hidden there as well.

My heart smiled.

I got to thinking about how my front garden is a haven for young mom’s.  I put tons of things in there to make children look and see, I give mom’s permission to come and close and take a moment or three with their littles and just see and smile and look, and if needed, pick a flower or two.   It’s all good, and it brings a smile to many a face.  🙂

It may not be a haven of rest, but I do hope it a haven of connectivity.   We need to connect with each other, to bring a smile or two to the face and hearts of others, don’t you think?
