Review: Doctor Aviation

July 18, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

Did you know I have a nephew who is big into aviation, and another who trained to be an airplane mechanic?  I have a brother who is training to be a helicopter pilot… so an interest in the air and flight runs in the family. Ergo, when I had a chance to review Doctor Aviation I snatched it up!  I’m listening to it as an adult, though I freely admit, I shared interesting bits with my lad.  ๐Ÿ™‚  Doctor Aviation is an aviation education and history course run by Daryl Smith, taken online.

What do you get?
You get six sections with 1 to 4 lessons in each section.  Each Lesson runs 45-50 minutes and follows the same routine.  Technical Trivia, Notable Innovators and Legendary Events or Aircraft.  Every few lessons, if you are taking this for credit, you can ask for a test. (there will be a prompt in the actions steps).

Technical Trivia is the meat of the program.  Here Daryl Smith is usually found standing in front of an aircraft with his notes.  He presents the information in a lecture format, interspersing his presentation with slides to help present the information more clearly.  These aviation history videos are interesting to listen to indeed.

The Notable Innovators section is where he talks about the people important to aviation history. We are given a chance to learn about Earhart and Bernouli as well as many others.

Legendary events or aircraft speaks to times in history that were important to aviation, such as breaking the sound barrier, why Earhart flight didn’t work, the trip to the moon and such like.  Facts that shaped the history of aviation.

You can see how the lessons are laid out.  See how the sections are labeled, with the appropriate lessons contained within.  15 lessons in all.
Section one: Course Overview (1)
Section two: The Aircraft (4)
Section three: Air Traffic Control (2)
Section four: Aircraft Maintenance (2)
Section five: Airfield Operations (2)
Section six: The Aircraft II (4)

How did I use?
I plugged my ear phones into my lap top and listened as I worked.  When I was intrigued I stopped what I was doing, clicked over to where the video was playing, backed up the video and listened again.  Watching the images that would pop up, taking notes for the complicated stuff, and then returned to my work.  It was a great way to learn new material, refresh my mind over the old, and to inspire my thinking.   Seeing how things fit together, listening to the easy break down of the technical details, the interesting people in aviation and some of the legendary events.

I have to admit, I didn’t do ANY of the optional exercises.  I just listened and learned. ๐Ÿ™‚
But they have a ton of things you can do to broaden your learning, from books to read, to models to build and essays you can write.   Here is but a small sampling.  Rather cool eh?

Oh!  I mustn’t forget to tell you about this handy feature: GUIDED NOTES.  They follow the script really well and help you retain the information presented.  You need to forgive my scrawl and the fact that I didn’t completely fill it in (honestly even when I was in school I never filled sheets in all the way).  A bit of rebel you know?  ๐Ÿ™‚

My thoughts:
Darryl Smith talks well, he keeps to his notes but looks at the camera. The notes just keep him on topic and prevent the forgetting of details.   You can tell that he spent
24 years in the Air Force as a Command Pilot with over 2,000 flying
hours and that he was an instructor in the United States Air Force Academy.

I loved having the notes.  I admittedly didn’t use them often as I mostly listened, but when I needed them, they were right there, easily saved to my computer for later reference, and easy to print off for when I wanted them.  They followed the script really well.

If I had planned to use this as a student, I would have found ALL the options for increasing the scope of the lessons great.  Books to read, projects to do, so many options it was great.   Incorporating the different senses and styles of learning.  Let’s build a wind tunnel, or draw a map outlining someone’s journey or…. so many options it was great!

I disliked that “oh don’t be alarmed by the technical stuff I’ll make it easy for you” type conversations.   I find when people do that it’s easy to think it will be over my head rather than just assuming that I’ll get it.  I want the assumption there that the instructor will make it clear what I need to know, instead of making me feel like I’m set up for failure.

I wish his labels would always precede each new section and that dots were put on the time line to show where they started.  That way I could easily review a section if I want to or if I think “oh.. the lad will like hearing about this aviator” and I wouldn’t have to hunt for it.  ๐Ÿ™‚

I LOVE how the lessons are set up the same.  Course title, video, things you need to see about doing and additional resources.  It’s all quite logical, with clean crisp edges that don’t distract from the lessons to be learned.

This is a course that you could EASILY stretch out to fill six months OR if you are rushed and just want to listen to the lessons, you could complete it in less than a month.  The guided notes are yours to keep along with the additional resources.   Making this a very handy and useful elective for you or your students to take.

Review: Fascinating Education

July 11, 2017 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Currently I am grading a highschool biology course, I’m doing pretty good on it but sometimes my students ask me a question that requires some research, ergo when I learned about reviewing Fascinating Biology put out by Fascinating Education, I thought, what a perfect opportunity for me to brush up on my highschool biology!! Thank you Fascinating Education for the opportunity to do so.You have been a good help to me.  ๐Ÿ™‚

About Fascinating Education
It was created by Dr. Margulies.  Fascinating Biology, is an online biology course, that comes with 18 lessons.  His goal is to break down the sciences into bite-sized, manageable chunks to increase the learning potential in his students. As you can see, each lesson is broken down into several components.  If you stop your video, it will pick up again where you left off when you return which is ever so handy.  Means you can just stop and not worry about having to start all over again.  Having each section clearly labeled also means you know where he is going as he moves through the lecture.

Each Lesson also comes with a built in glossary/vocabulary section.   If you highlight a word, it’s definition shows up below. This is a very handy feature.

How I used it.
One of the things I love about fascinating biology is that I can pick the order I want to do the lessons in.  For instance, one of my students was having a problem with understanding mitosis and meiosis… so I went directly to that section, listened and got the answer.  AND since we get a full course transcript it made it really easy for me to get the answer to my student, and help them find additional support online to help them gain better understanding.  Pretty cool eh?

The 18 lessons are as follows:

  • What is life
  • Chemistry review
  • The cell membrane
  • Take in Nutrients
  • Take in Energy (four parts)
  • Grow
  • Reproduce (three parts)
  • Homeostasis (two parts)
  • Adapt (two parts)
  • Prokaryotes, Protists, Animals, Fungi
  • Plants

So other than researching areas of concern for my students, how did I actually use it?
At night!  Seriously, hubby would go to bed, and I’d put in my ear phones and just listen.  I could work on other things, listen and do my brushing up.  It was great!   When an area was harder to understand I could stop what I was doing, rewind the video and listen again while watching the slides.  Then if I really didn’t understand I could pull up the transcript and read through it.  Have these two different ways to access the material I felt completely covered!

I honestly didn’t really look at the tests a whole lot but I did take one and much to my surprise I pulled off an 80% which tells me that if you listen AND read the transcripts…you’ll nail the material.  The questions come right out of the script.. so honestly listen, read, test yourself if you like to.  BUT as an adult using it as a refresher, seriously its optional.  As a highschool student needing a transcript.. take the test.  ๐Ÿ™‚

If you do take the route of using the tests, as you go through your results you can easily see where you went wrong. Helps with the learning eh?  But seriously, unless you are you taking this for highschool biology credit, don’t worry about the tests unless you love taking them.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Taking the Chemistry course first is recommended, but if you choose to do Biology first they have a short chemistry course you can take first. Six lessons to make sure you understand the chemistry part of biology.  It’s called Chemistry Pre-course for Biology.  It’s a subset of the chemistry course and would be an added cost.

My thoughts:
I love love love how everything is covered in this biology curriculum.. the full course transcript, the ability to watch or listen to the video being taught, the slides, being able to jump around from lesson to lesson learning what I need to.  It’s great.  Seriously.  For the purposes for which I am using it, it has been a useful addition into my household.

Fascinating Education.
Fascinating Biology, along with a pre-course (6 lessons that cover the basics of Chemistry bonding methods) to help me brush up on my chemistry.

Review: SchoolhouseTeachers.com

January 12, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

Affiliate Links are used in this post. They cost you nothing & help me with my family needs.

I’ve been a member at SchoolhouseTeachers.com for so long I can’t even really remember when I started, I know it was from before I started working with the Homeschool Review Crew.    I have used different program with them throughout the years and each year they add more courses to their Yearly Membership.

Recently I wrote a post talking about the courses I am planning to use with my son this year, You can find that post here.  It will be good to round out our studies with these interesting courses.

I got to reading through some of the other courses, looking for anything that might interest me and guess what?   I found a couple.

This one on Digital Art and Product Designs for Small Business. 50 Lessons once a week to put my creative skills to good use learning to make better graphics for my blog posts.   Doesn’t that sound great?   I feel rather inadequate sometimes as I lack confidence and natural eye for making graphics.

I have a lad who enjoys history so I’ve been questing around for a history program I can use once he’s gone through all the Veritas Press history program.    To that end I’ve discovered a what I think will be a good gap program.   This Day in History.  Learning on new history fact a day/week depending on how I use it.   Just the kind of thing to intrigue the lad.

It’s actually rather hard to choose as there are over 300 courses that you can take.   ALL for one low yearly fee.

Just look at all these different categories!

Divided into Elementary, Middle School and Highschool for your ease in finding courses that interest you.    I am thinking they might want to offer some adult courses as well, though I have to admit those grade 12 courses are intriguing.  ๐Ÿ™‚

SchoolhouseTeachers.com has never let me down in the quality of what they offer.  They have so many different courses to choose from, that you can even use one to compliment another.

Their recent upgrade lends itself to a beautiful website, that is easy to navigate. One of the nicest features is the “can I help you” customer support button.   Ready and willing to help you at varied times throughout the day.  One night I was working at it was past 9 pm. and someone was there to help!  I was stunned!   Kind helpful people willing to help you find just the course you want.

The Homeschool Review Crew has been busy reviewing this company and it’s yearly membership.   Do check them out by clicking the image below or by following this link.

A Variety of Things

Homeschooling-ideas.com sent me their newsletter which is filled with a variety of good ideas. Sign up for it yourselves and get all these ideas sent right to you. ๐Ÿ™‚ I have to admit, I really liked the idea of doing a photography week… and using that as a time to make photocalenders as gifts. Use a theme, teach light/shadows etc. I can see this one being a good one for hubby to work on with the lad as he’s our camera man.

Review: Career Explorations for HS Students

September 4, 2010 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Career Explorations for High School Students: Pursuing their Dreams ByCarol Topp is a WeeBook published by The Old Schoolhouse.

I was sent this to review by The Old Schoolhouse. And I have to admit, right up front… we’re not there yet. My lad is only five so I’m reading this only to see what it has to say and if it’s something that I think I’ll like to read again in the future.

The author emphasized that choosing a career is a process. Things in life change, and therefore, so does one career. She went on to explain that there are four steps to career exploration and gave us a list of resources one might wish to look at when going through this process.

Overall, well written piece and one worth looking at again in 10 years or so. ๐Ÿ™‚ For those of you further along in the process, it worth looking at now.
