Hymn

Christ the Lord is Risen Today

August 25, 2019 By Annette1 2 Comments

Do you know this Easter hymn, Christ the Lord is Risen Today?   Good not only for Easter, but to remind us that the tomb is empty.  God did his work through his son.  He makes our faith a powerhouse!

Christ the Lord is Risen Today

The History

Charles Wesley wrote this hymn. A prolific song writer, Charles Wesley (along with his brother John) served the people on England.  He wrote more than 6, 000 hymns.  His father was a poet and a cleric in the Anglican church.   If you would like to know more about him Christianity Today has a decent article about him.

Lyrics to Christ the Lord is Risen Today

Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!
Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing ye heav’ns, and earth reply, Alleluia!

Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!
Lo! Our sun’s eclipse is o’er, Alleluia!
Lo! He sets in blood no more, Alleluia!

Vain the stone, the watch, the seal, Alleluia!
Christ has burst the gates of hell, Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids His rise, Alleluia!
Christ has opened paradise, Alleluia!

Lives again our glorious king, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Dying once He all doth save, Alleluia!*
Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

Soar we now, where Christ has led, Alleluia!
Following our exalted head, Alleluia!
Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia!
Ours the cross—the grave—the skies, Alleluia!

Give Me Jesus

August 18, 2019 By Annette1 4 Comments

I was first introduced to “Give me Jesus” by Fernando Ortego.  He remains one of my favourite Christian singers.  His way of singing brings me back to God and his music makes me think.  It’s a good combination.  🙂   Anyways, I was reminded of this song as I browsed through Spotify.  This was the first song they pulled up for me.

Give Me Jesus

The History

Give me Jesus was written by Jeremy Camp. Born in 1978 this American musician hails from Indiana. Jeremy grew up with a pastor for a father, and in turn became a minister himself.   He has won numerous Christian music awards.   His first wife died of cancer, he has since remarried to Adrienne.  They currently live in Nashville with their children.

Lyrics to Give Me Jesus

In the morning, when I rise
In the morning, when I rise
In the morning, when I rise

Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world,
Just give me Jesus.

When I am alone,
When I am alone,
When I am alone,
Give me Jesus.

Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world,
Just give me Jesus.

When I come to die,
When I come to die,
When I come to die,
Give me Jesus.

Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world,
Just give me Jesus.

Give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus.
You can have all this world,
You can have all this world,
You can have all this world,
Just give me Jesus.

Jesus Paid It All

August 11, 2019 By Annette1 2 Comments

We sang a version of this old hymn in church today, I thought, since I hadn’t shared it before that today was a good day to do so.  🙂   Jesus Paid it All, this hymn fit well with learning the Easter story in the middle of summer.  Without the action of Christ, our faith would be in vain.

Jesus Paid It All

This lovely hymn was written by Mrs. Elvina M. Hall who lived in Maryland.  Written in 1865 Mrs Hall wrote the tune while listening to the pastor preach in Baltimore.  She handed it to him at the close of the service and he paired it with a new tune his organist had played that morning.   (source)  The organist John Grape, had called his tune “All to Christ I owe”.  Elvina was 45 years old at the time, married to Richard Hall.  She later married again to Methodist minister, Thomas Meyers.  She lived 1820-1899.

Lyrics to Jesus Paid It All

I hear the Savior say,
Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.

Refrain

Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

For nothing good have I
Whereby Thy grace to claim,
I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb.

Refrain

And now complete in Him
My robe His righteousness,
Close sheltered ’neath His side,
I am divinely blest.

Refrain

Lord, now indeed I find
Thy power and Thine alone,
Can change the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone.

Refrain

When from my dying bed
My ransomed soul shall rise,
Jesus died my soul to save,
Shall rend the vaulted skies.

Refrain

And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete,
I’ll lay my trophies down
All down at Jesus’ feet.

Refrain

I know where I’m Going

July 28, 2019 By Annette1 4 Comments

Today I have an Irish melody for you!   I know where I am going is a song I song more than a time or two in my life, but always in a lower key.  🙂

As to who wrote it, it’s a traditional hymn that one of my hymnbooks lists as Scottish in origin, and another lists as Irish.  I’ve seen it both ways on-line as well.   So your guess is as good as mine. 🙂

The words I have in this hymnal are different than the words of the videos I chose.  So these might be completely different songs.   I dunno.  The lyrics follow along so run with it folks!  🙂

Lyrics

I know where I’m going,
And I know who’s going with me;
I know why there’s music
In the quiet summer morning.

I found a wealth of gold
And of silver I have plenty
I found a light to guide me
When my way gets dark and gloomy

Where Are you going?
Who will walk beside you?
When the night is gloomy
Where is the light to guide you?

And where’s your gold
and your sliver brightly shining?
Who writes the music
In the quiet summer morning?

I’m going where he goes
and He’ll be there bedies me
The love for which he dies
Is all I need to guide me

And he’s my gold
And silver brightly shining
He writes the music
in the quiet summer morning!

I know where I”m going
but where are you going?

Surely Goodness and Mercy

July 21, 2019 By Annette1 2 Comments

Surely goodness and mercy is based on Psalm 23.  It’s a bouncy fun song to sing.  Join in won’t you?  🙂

surely goodness and mercy

John W. Peterson and Alfred B. Smith were friends who worked on this lovely song together.  To learn the history of how it came to be GO HERE.

Lyrics

A pilgrim was I, and a wandering,
In the cold night of sin I did roam,
When Jesus the kind Shepherd found me,
And now I am on my way home.

Chorus:
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days, all the days of my life;
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days, all the days of my life.

Verse 2:
He restoreth my soul when I’m weary,
He giveth me strength day by day;
He leads me beside the still waters,
He guards me each step of the way.

Verse 3:
When I walk through the dark lonesome valley,
My savior will walk with me there;
And safely His great hand will lead me
To the mansions He’s gone to prepare.

Chorus:
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days, all the days of my life;
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days, all the days of my life.

And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever,
And I shall feast at the table spread for me;
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days, all the days of my life.

Am I A Soldier Of the Cross?

July 14, 2019 By Annette1 2 Comments

This song popped out at me as I was leafing through another older hymnal that I was looking at.  (see what tidying does for a body!).   Oh.. it’s been fun this afternoon browsing and listening to songs of worship.  Isaac Watts asks a good question in this hymn though: Am I a soldier of the cross?

am I a soldier of the cross?

Isaac Watts, born in 1647, is the author of Am I A Soldier of the Cross.  He was born in England, son of a nonconformist father and became a nonconformist pastor.   Being a nonconformist meant he didn’t belong to the Church of England.

He not only wrote hymns (for which is best known today) but also educational books covering geography, astronomy, philosophy and grammar.   A inspiring pastor he preached at Mark Lane Independent.  Poor health led him to live with the Abney’s in Herdfordshire for the remainder of his life.

Lyrics

Am I a soldier of the cross,
A follower of the Lamb,
And shall I fear to own His cause,
Or blush to speak His name?

Must I be carried to the skies
On flowery beds of ease,
While others fought to win the prize,
And sailed through bloody seas?

Are there no foes for me to face?
Must I not stem the flood?
Is this vile world a friend to grace,
To help me on to God?

Sure I must fight if I would reign;
Increase my courage, Lord.
I’ll bear the toil, endure the pain,
Supported by Thy Word.

Thy saints in all this glorious war
Shall conquer, though they die;
They see the triumph from afar,
By faith’s discerning eye.

When that illustrious day shall rise,
And all Thy armies shine
In robes of victory through the skies,
The glory shall be Thine.

They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love

June 30, 2019 By Annette1 4 Comments

I was doing some tidying today and found a “Folk hymnal for a new generation”.  As I was leafing through it I saw this song “they’ll know we are Christians by our love”.  I remember singing this frequently as a teen/young adult and thought I’d share it with you today.

they'll know we are Christians by our love

They’ll know we are Christians by our love was written by Peter Scholtes.   This song is also as “we are one in the spirit”.  Peter Scholtes was a Catholic priest in the 1960’s.  He was also a choir director. The title comes from the biblical saying that non-believers know Christians by the love we show.   Scholtes later left the priesthood and became a businessman.

Lyrics

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord
And we pray that our unity will one day be restored
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
Yeah they’ll know we are Christians by our love

We will work with each other, we will work side by side
We will work with each other, we will work side by side
And we’ll guard each man’s dignity and save each man’s pride
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
Yeah, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand
We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand
And together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
They will know we are Christians by our love

All praise to the father by who all things
And all praise to Christ Jesus his only son
And all praise to the Spirit who makes us one
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
They will know we are Christians by our love
