Come Christians Join to Sing

April 28, 2019 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Come Christians Join to Sing is a song I used to sing frequently in my parent’s church growing up. I have sung it infrequently since then. It has lovely words that I hope you will enjoy.

Come Christians join to sing

Written by Christian Henry Batemen in 1843, Come Christians Join to Sing calls us into praising our Lord our King, Guide, Friend who loves us unendingly. Christian H. Bateman was an Englishman who lived from 1813 to 1889. He was a Congregational minister. He was not a prolific author, this is his most popular song.

Lyrics

Come, Christians, join to sing
Alleluia! Amen!
Loud praise to Christ our king;
Alleluia! Amen!
Let all, with heart and voice,
Before His throne rejoice;
Praise is His gracious choice.
Alleluia! Amen!

Come, lift your hearts on high,
Alleluia! Amen!
Let praises fill the sky;
Alleluia! Amen!
He is our guide and friend;
To us He’ll condescend;
His love shall never end.
Alleluia! Amen!

Praise yet our Christ again,
Alleluia! Amen!
Life shall not end the strain;
Alleluia! Amen!
On heaven’s blissful shore,
His goodness we’ll adore,
Singing forevermore,
Alleluia! Amen!

Where the Soul Never Dies

April 21, 2019 By Annette1 2 Comments

I was browsing music online the other day and this song popped up. I am not terribly familiar with it, but it caught my attention so thought I would share with you. 🙂 Where the soul never dies, the name, and I hope you enjoy it.

where the soul never dies

Where the Would Never Dies was written by Wayne Raney . He is Arkansas born and raised, and grew up to be a harmonica player and a country and western singer. He moved to Mexico at age 13. He was not able to do physical labour due to a foot deformity.

He wrote a variety of music and made a gospel album. He eventually performed very little. He eventually returned to Arkansas, retiring to raise chickens. He lost his voice in the 1980’s and stopped performing. He succumbed to cancer in 1993.

Lyrics

To Canaan’s land I’m on my way where the soul never dies
My darkest night will turn to day where the soul never dies
No sad farewell (And there’ll be no sad farewell)
No tear-dimmed eyes (There will be no tear-dimmed eyes)
Where all His deeds, His joy and love and the soul of man never dies

A rose is blooming there for me where the soul of man never dies
And I shall live eternally where the soul of man never dies
No sad farewell (And there’ll be no sad farewell)
No tear-dimmed eyes (There will be no tear-dimmed eyes)
Where all His deeds, His joy and love and the soul of man never dies

No sad farewell (And there’ll be no sad farewell)
No tear-dimmed eyes (There will be no tear-dimmed eyes)
Where all His deeds, His joy and love and the soul of man never dies
No sad farewell (And there’ll be no sad farewell)
No tear-dimmed eyes (There will be no tear-dimmed eyes)
Where all His deeds, His joy and love and the soul of man never dies (No sad farewell)

Be Not Dismayed Whate’er Betide

April 14, 2019 By Annette1 2 Comments

Be Not Dismayed Whate’er Betide is a lovely short hymn reminding us of God’s continual care for his people.

be not dismayed whate'er betide

Author and History

Civilla D Martin is the author of this hymn of God’s care. She is a dual citizen of Canada and the United States. Writer of many hymns and songs., she married twice over her lifetime. First to a Rev. John F. Geddes, Congregational minister. Later she married Walter Stillman Martin, a Baptist minister, and traveled with him in evangelistic work when she was not confined to her sick bed.

In regards to this first hymn she wrote: I was confined to a sick bed in a Bible school in Lestershire, New York. – God Will Take Care of You was written one Sunday afternoon while my husband went to a preaching appointment. When he returned I gave the words to him. He immediately sat down – and wrote the music. That evening he and two of the teachers sang the completed song.

Lyrics

Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you;
Beneath His wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.

Refrain

God will take care of you,
Through every day, o’er all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.

Through days of toil when heart doth fail,
God will take care of you;
When dangers fierce your path assail,
God will take care of you.

Refrain

All you may need He will provide,
God will take care of you;
Nothing you ask will be denied,
God will take care of you.

Refrain

No matter what may be the test,
God will take care of you;
Lean, weary one, upon His breast,
God will take care of you.

Victory in Jesus

April 7, 2019 By Annette1 2 Comments

I heard an old old story… this is the first line to the song Victory in Jesus. Just think about it for a moment, this old story, one told to us in the bible. This story leads to victory.

Victory in Jesus

E.M. Bartlett is the author of this hymn, it is the last one that he wrote. Missouri born, Eugene Monroe Barlett Sr. was a songwriter who spent his working life in the music field. Working for the Hartford Music Institute he expanded their reach from Arkansas into Texas and Oklahoma.

Lyrics

I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning,
Of His precious blood’s atoning,
Then I repented of my sins
And won the victory.

Chorus
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about His healing,
Of His cleansing pow’r revealing.
How He made the lame to walk again
And caused the blind to see;
And then I cried, “Dear Jesus,
Come and heal my broken spirit,”
And somehow Jesus came and bro’t
To me the victory.

I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory.
And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing,
And the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I’ll sing up there
The song of victory.

There is Power in the Blood

March 24, 2019 By Annette1 2 Comments

So here I was listening to music and this song popped up. Before I knew it was singing along forgetting I was working at the library. Oops! What can I say, There is Power in the Blood. (grin). I wasn’t sure if I should entitle this post by There is Power in the Blood or Would you be free from the burden of Sin. It goes by both, but mostly comes up as There is Power in the Blood.

There is power in the blood

Lewis E Jones wrote this song while attending a camp meeting at Mountain Lake Park in Montana. He sold the song to Henry Lake Gilmour.  It was subsequently published in Songs of Praise and Victory for the first time.

Lewis Edgar Jones, who was born in Illinois. He graduated from the Moody Bible Institute, later working for the YMCA. Ssong-writing was something he did on the side, writing many song. There is Power in the Blood is the song he is most known for. He wrote under a variety of pen-names, such as Lewis Edgar, Edgar Lewis, Mary Slater, and more.

Lyrics

Would you be free from the burden of sin?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Would you o’er evil a victory win?
There’s wonderful power in the blood.

Refrain

There is power, power, wonder working power
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is power, power, wonder working power
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

Would you be free from your passion and pride?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Come for a cleansing to Calvary’s tide;
There’s wonderful power in the blood.

Refrain

Would you be whiter, much whiter than snow?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Sin stains are lost in its life giving flow.
There’s wonderful power in the blood.

Refrain

Would you do service for Jesus your king?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Would you live daily His praises to sing?
There’s wonderful power in the blood.

Refrain

The Lord’s My Shepherd

March 10, 2019 By Annette1 2 Comments

I can hardly believe that I have not done this old favourite yet!   The Lord’s My Shepherd.  Based off Psalm 23.  My oh my, I do hope you enjoy this one. 🙂

The Lord’s my shepherd

 We don’t know a whole lot about this hymn other than it is sung to several tunes…I personally know three tunes, but there are more since as I was searching I ran into an unfamiliar one.

According to Discipleship Ministries, Calvin had Psalm 23 put to a variety of metrical tunes to facilitate people learning it well.

Lyrics

The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want.
He makes me down to lie
In pastures green; He leadeth me
The quiet waters by.

My soul He doth restore again;
And me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
Even for His own name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,
Yet will I fear no ill;
For Thou art with me; and Thy rod
And staff my comfort still.

My table Thou hast furnishèd
In presence of my foes;
My head Thou dost with oil anoint,
And my cup overflows.

Goodness and mercy all my life
Shall surely follow me;
And in God’s house forevermore
My dwelling place shall be.

All Creatures of our God and King

March 3, 2019 By Annette1 2 Comments

Imagine writing a song and not having it published until 400 years after you die?  This is what happened to Francis of Assisi.

All creatures of our God and king

Francis of Assisi wrote this hymn shortly before he died.  It was written as part of the Canticle of the Sun.  It would have been written in Italian.   It was written at a time when he was weak and struggling with periods of temporary blindness.  St. Francis wished to express the unity he felt with nature and the peace he experienced as his death drew near.

It was translated, to become part of a children’s festival, by William Draper.

Lyrics

All creatures of our God and king
Lift up your voice and with us sing,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Thou burning sun with golden beam,
Thou silver moon with softer gleam!

Refrain
O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou rushing wind that art so strong
Ye clouds that sail in Heaven along,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Thou rising moon, in praise rejoice,
Ye lights of evening, find a voice!

Refrain

Thou flowing water, pure and clear,
Make music for thy Lord to hear,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Thou fire so masterful and bright,
That givest man both warmth and light.

Refrain

Dear mother earth, who day by day
Unfoldest blessings on our way,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
The flowers and fruits that in thee grow,
Let them His glory also show.

Refrain

And all ye men of tender heart,
Forgiving others, take your part,
O sing ye! Alleluia!
Ye who long pain and sorrow bear,
Praise God and on Him cast your care!

Refrain

And thou most kind and gentle death,
Waiting to hush our latest breath,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Thou leadest home the child of God,
And Christ our Lord the way hath trod.

Refrain

Let all things their creator bless,
And worship Him in humbleness,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
And praise the Spirit, Three in One!

Refrain
