Hymn Study: Agnes Dei

We sang this song in church this morning and I loved it.  Didn’t sing all of it, mouthed the words as I have a sore throat (Courtesy of my son)… and I was reminded of how much I love this praise song of worship to our living Lord God.
This one was put together by Michael W. Smith, he has long been a favourite of mine for the music that he puts together.   So many songs of worship to God.

Can’t you just see it?
The Lord rejoicing in the praise and worship of his people?
Of his people pouring out their hearts before him?
Seeing God for who he is?
Yes I know, It’s easy to get caught up on the music, but seriously, don’t you just see God’s people loving up on the Lord God who created them?   Who leads them every single day?
I do.
And it fills my heart with wonder.
Makes me see how much smaller I am than God.
And thankful for his love, protection and guidance throughout my life.

Do you think it could be a good weapon?

Saturday:
We’d had tentative plans to go to a home and garden show but life proved very busy this week so we stayed home.  I got some gardening done, the lad worked on some big minecraft project he has going, and hubby did something (honestly can’t remember.. OH right.. he worked on a sermon).

Sunday:
Hubby preached at a wee tiny church, they fed us lunch, I looked around in their church and oh my goodness it was beautiful in the main sanctuary!!!

 I went for a walk in the afternoon with the lad from what I recall.   Oh I did!   I took some pictures of the flowers etc that I saw along the way. 

Monday: 
Kumon Math Pre-Algebra, The Typing Coach, Reading from Shepherd, Spy, Potter and the Star Namer, Smartick, Veritas Press History and Bible, and… something else that neither of us can remember. 🙂   He then went off to visit gramma while Dad and I kibitized about town .. We had lunch at 168 Sushi, went for a walk, and kept ourselves busy for a spell.  When we got home the lad wanted to go for a walk with me so out we headed, walking around the dam and it’s lake.

Tuesday: 
Kumon Math Pre-Algebra, The Typing Coach, Reading from Shepherd, Spy, Potter and the Star Namer, Smartick, Veritas Press History and Bible, Art Achieve, and Digital Savvy. 

We watched this really interesting video while doing our Art Achieve.

The
lad’s turn to make supper so he learned to make hamburger buns from
scratch as he wants to have hamburgers for supper, and we went for walk. The Lad had a hoot helping to make buns this afternoon, and I learned that girls and boys have a different perspective on kneading bread.  🙂  The lad asked “Do you think it could be a good weapon?  Imagine it stuck to the visor of a knight’s helmet!”
Wednesday: 
I spent the morning at the Foodbank and the lad stayed home to work on his Cacti Presentation for the Project Fair Friday night.   In the evening he has karate and I’ll be going to the Hospital Rummage Sale.  Hubby had an appreciation luncheon to go to at one of the Nursing homes he helps preach at.   I found six books and 6 shirts at the sale.  I went looking for shirts that would work as scrum around the house and rabbitry as almost all my old shirts have holes that my lad is telling me I shouldn’t have holes, so I’m thinking they aught to be dumped eh?   (turned into rabbitry or shop rags more likely)
After the luncheon hubby mowed the rather large church lawn… took forever it seemed.  The lad accompanied him so he could pick up all the big branches and get them out of dad’s way.  I mowed the lawn at home… boy… it’s always a slog doing the first few cuts of the year…the grass is so thick in the back.  But it’s done and it looks SO much better.   I was able to enjoy the flowers in the front yard while I cut though.  🙂 

Thursday: 
Schooling and gardening.   It was a simple but focused day.   Oh, we started a new studying using SchoolhouseTeachers.com as Veritas Press Bible course is done for the year.    The lad tightened up his Cacti presentation and I took some pictures of the rabbits.  We also went for a walk around town.  I was reminded WHY I like walking trails as my feet were sore by the time we got home walking around in town on the sidewalks.

Friday:
The last day of HOPE day Co-op.. ever so depressing… I like having a co-op to teach and do things with and seeing the creativity in others just boggles my mind.  🙂

Hymn Study: Rise Up O Men of God

We sang this hymn this morning in a wee little church about an hour from home.   Hubby was guest preaching there.   When I say wee tiny.. I mean like FIVE members!!!  It amazes me that this church is able to keep going eh?    No organist… so I think when we go back in a month that I’ll start each hymn off just so we know what we’re singing a bit better.  🙂   I’m not a great pianist…but I can get us started off.  🙂

Rise up o men of God was written by William Pierson Merrill. An American pastor, originally from New Jersey, he served in Chicago and New York.  Merrill became the first president of the “Church Peace Union”, a pacifist organization. His 1914 sermon titled “The Making of Peace” was hailed by Andrew
Carnegie as “…one of the greatest sermons on peace that he had ever
heard.”

He was not a prolific hymn writer (he’s known for four hymns) and had written a few articles as well.   You can find them listed here.   There’s really not a whole lot known about him, but I do like this hymn that he wrote.  Comes with two different tunes, we sing it to St.Thomas, but I really liked this one below, even if they didn’t sing the whole song.

All this praise shown to our Lord God.  Creator, One who shows mercy, his providence, his grace, all these reasons to praise the Lord.   By his creation, his people, with their hearts, their hands, their voices.   PRAISE the Lord eh?

Written by Henry F. Lyte back in 1834.

Henry Francis Lyte was in 1793 in Scotland but was orphaned at an early age.  A poet who served as a pastor in Devonshire, England.  He died in France in 1847.  Before passing away he authored two books of poetry and hymns.  Po­ems Chief­ly Re­li­gious, 1833 & 1845 and The Spir­it of the Psalms, 1834  (Source cyber hymnal)

While pastoring a church, Mr. Lyte didn’t have a true calling of the Lord, not really understanding the faith.  A dying priest’s comments got him studying the bible, and a true conversion happened thereafter.  The dying priest “convinced Lyte that both had earlier been mistaken in not having taken the Epistles of St.Paul “in their plain and literal sense.“” (source wiki)

Mr. Lyte also wrote Abide with Me, and wrote a few other pieces of literature, such as “his Talks on the Lord’s Prayer

I just thought this rendition below was interesting: Chinese I think…. singing this old hymn.   The organist played well too.. see how focused he was?

He Will Pour Out His Spirit

Today we are reading from Ezekiel 39:25-29. Last time we met we learned about God’s Holiness made Manifest. You can read more in my Ezekiel Studies here and here.

We saw how the Lord’s holiness was made apparent to all…from Israel to the nations surrounding her. 

Now we find God making a promise to his people.   He will 

  • restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on the whole house of Israel
  • I will be jealous for my holy name. 

The end result of that should be this: 
 26 They shall forget their shame and all the treachery they have practiced against me, 


So here’s the scene.   God gave his people a safe to live, they turned around and did their own thing.  Ignoring him, communing with false gods/idols and just generally making his name a mockery.  God corrected them for their action.

He has now gathered them together out of enemy names, thereby vindicating his holiness. The surrounding nations have seen this great thing the Lord has done. 
 
And so : they shall know that I am the Lord
their God, because I sent them into exile among the nations and then
assembled them into their own land. I will leave none of them remaining
among the nations anymore. 29 And I will not hide my face anymore from them, when I pour out my Spirit upon the house of Israel, declares the Lord God.”

We have gone from God hiding his face from his people.   No longer leaving his people scattered, to a God who has brought his people together again.   A God who is saying to his people and to the nations surrounding them I AM THE LORD GOD.

I almost missed this part ” I will not hide my face anymore from them, when I pour out my Spirit upon the house of Israel”.    God is going to pour out his Spirit on his people.

You know what happens when God pours his Spirit out on his people?   Do you really know what happens?

Lives are changed!  

Consider what has happened when God has moved in the past?   Jerusalem was rebuilt,  pentecost, A spiritual revival happened in New England, an underground church developed in China, and more.   When God pours out his spirit lives are changed abundantly.

Something I’ve learned is revivals also happen in small ways… like when God changed the Life of Francis Lyte (a pastoral hymn writer you’ll learn about later).  A dying man’s words changed his faith, and so his church grew!   Or when a faithful family prays and their neighbourhood is changed, or when a parent prays over a unrepentant child and sees their child come to faith.   Lives changed.

I read these words I will not hide my face anymore from them, when I pour out my Spirit upon the house of Israel and I don’t want to be a person God hides his face from.  I want to be the one that God pours his Spirit out on them abundantly.  So let me live my life this way.  Aware of God’s abundant favour upon my life.  Let me always remember that the God is serve and follow and cling to is the LORD GOD.  Yes?

Hymn Study: Praise the Lord: Ye Heavens Adore Him

Praise The Lord: Ye Heavens, Adore Him.

This is an older hymn, the first two verses found pasted inside the jacket of the hymnbook for the London’s Foundling Hospital.    This was an orphanage that was famous for their children’s chorus led by trained musicians.   It is remembered today through the hymnbook “Psalms, Hymns and Anthems of the Foundling Hospital, of 1796”.   (source Cyber Hymnal)   There is a museum dedicated the the London Foundling Hospital.

The first two verses were penned by an anonymous author, the third verse was penned by Edward Osler.

The author of the first verse paraphrased Psalm 148, showing all creation praising the Lord.  Then it shows how the Lord created all, and all the world obeys his voice.   Verse two shows God’s care for his creation, how his promises never fail.   Osler’s third verse is our praise to God.

Edward Osler was a physician and author.  He worked as physician from 1819 to 1836.   After which he devoted himself to literary pursuits. Over time he ended up as the editor of the Royal Cornwall Gazette.   He wrote several literary works as well as hymns. (source hymnary)

I thought this tune quite different, I liked how she sang it, but not sure if it would work as congregational singing.   She didn’t sing the entire hymn.

And it was good! Our week Feb 19-25

We planned a bit of a short week this week.   Plans to go away this weekend, a vehicle in need of repair, and knowing the learning takes place in many different ways.  🙂  School happened!   Life happened.  And it was good!  🙂

Monday 
Today was family day, so the lad did his minimal schooling that he does on days off, and off we went to first take part in a demonstration Karate Class and then to go for a walk at the Pinery.   We did some pokemon going while we are there, toured through Grand Bend and just hung out together.

Tuesday 
Ice experiment…ooh.. fun with matches!

The lad made cake!
It was his turn to cook, he saw the cake in the cupboard and his eyes…. oh my, they just lit up!   “It’s my turn to cook!    Let’s have cake!”

He was a bit downcast when I mentioned that just cake for supper was not acceptable… which led him to ask for helped in making perogies.

Dad, not being a lover of perogies opted to make himself some other dish instead.

Wednesday 
Food bank.   Regular schooling.  The lad pushed hard and was done by 1230.  🙂  
Had a lovely walk together in the afternoon the lad and I did.   New Pokemon out and running around, so we had to chase them down.  🙂

Thursday 
School, the lad’s report this week on the Caribou.
Garbage day, lovely weather, car work to do… we called it done as early as we could. 🙂

The lad helped clean the cars out and helped dad work on the rear brakes.   They also fixed the side mirror that I accidentally broke off after over correcting from someone taking a corner really wide.   (I avoided being hit but the car mirror…not so much).

Friday 
Gramma coming over since hubby and I are heading out for the weekend.   
The lad did practical schooling today making cheese buns.  🙂  He’ll also be doing animal husbandry and housework with gramma this weekend.   

Saturday-Sunday
Hubby and I just schleped around together.    We had a wonderfully relaxing weekend doing absolutely nothing but wandering around together, looking and talking and just being alone without distraction.
