Hymn Study: Praise to the Lord the Almighty

Just wanted to share this song by Fernando Ortega. Another of my favourite minstrels. He changes the words abit from the original hymn, but overall it’s similar enough to remind me of this hymn. To see the lyrics that Mr. Ortega uses go here.

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near;
Praise Him in glad adoration.
Praise to the Lord, who over all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen how thy desires ever have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?

The verses in red are new to me, but they fit don’t they?   For a more traditional approach you may like this version. 

Joachim Neander wrote this song originally in German, it was called  “Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren”, and was published in 1680.  It was translated by Catherine Winkworth.   He died young (age 30) from Tuberculois, writing 60 hymns before he died.  He was a pietist in his faith, and was often at odds with the established Lutheran church.

Winkworth was a forerunner of hymn translators.   Born in English.  She translated many hymns.  She never married and spent her life in demand as a companion, business and secretarial assistant, housekeeper and babysitter.

Hymn Study: Agnes Dei

We sang this song in church this morning and I loved it.  Didn’t sing all of it, mouthed the words as I have a sore throat (Courtesy of my son)… and I was reminded of how much I love this praise song of worship to our living Lord God.
This one was put together by Michael W. Smith, he has long been a favourite of mine for the music that he puts together.   So many songs of worship to God.

Can’t you just see it?
The Lord rejoicing in the praise and worship of his people?
Of his people pouring out their hearts before him?
Seeing God for who he is?
Yes I know, It’s easy to get caught up on the music, but seriously, don’t you just see God’s people loving up on the Lord God who created them?   Who leads them every single day?
I do.
And it fills my heart with wonder.
Makes me see how much smaller I am than God.
And thankful for his love, protection and guidance throughout my life.

Hymn Study: Rise Up O Men of God

We sang this hymn this morning in a wee little church about an hour from home.   Hubby was guest preaching there.   When I say wee tiny.. I mean like FIVE members!!!  It amazes me that this church is able to keep going eh?    No organist… so I think when we go back in a month that I’ll start each hymn off just so we know what we’re singing a bit better.  🙂   I’m not a great pianist…but I can get us started off.  🙂

Rise up o men of God was written by William Pierson Merrill. An American pastor, originally from New Jersey, he served in Chicago and New York.  Merrill became the first president of the “Church Peace Union”, a pacifist organization. His 1914 sermon titled “The Making of Peace” was hailed by Andrew
Carnegie as “…one of the greatest sermons on peace that he had ever
heard.”

He was not a prolific hymn writer (he’s known for four hymns) and had written a few articles as well.   You can find them listed here.   There’s really not a whole lot known about him, but I do like this hymn that he wrote.  Comes with two different tunes, we sing it to St.Thomas, but I really liked this one below, even if they didn’t sing the whole song.

The Inner Temple

Todays’ bible passage comes from Ezekiel 41. Learning about the Inner Temple.

Can you imagine for a moment… being shown into yet another room in this HUGE temple city and watching all the measuring being done and you then hear these words:   “This is the Most Holy Place.”

Just think about that… having a vision of the place that will be God’s holy spot.  His area, where only a select group of people can go.   And you get the first glimpse of it, a vision that you have to carry to the rest of the people.

Think on that.


Then I went on to read about the temple and quite frankly.. I got lost in the details.  I figured out that it was HUGE, with stairs and levels, with broad expanses and what not, but beyond that details ran together on me. 

    
5 Then he measured the wall of the temple, six cubits thick, and the breadth of the side chambers, four cubits, all around the temple. 6 And the side chambers were in three stories, one over another, thirty in each story. There were offsets all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side chambers, so that they should not be supported by the wall of the temple. 7 And
it became broader as it wound upward to the side chambers, because the
temple was enclosed upward all around the temple. Thus the temple had a
broad area upward, and so one went up from the lowest story to the top story through the middle story. 8 I saw also that the temple had a raised platform all around; the foundations of the side chambers measured a full reed of six long cubits. 9 The thickness of the outer wall of the side chambers was five cubits. The free space between the side chambers of the temple and the 10 other chambers was a breadth of twenty cubits all around the temple on every side.  ….

I had this thought that all of this was done in stone, perhaps with some trim here and there, but then I read that there was wood paneling around the thresholds, that was carved with palm trees and cherubim. The cherubs each had two face … one of lion, one of a human.

The inside of the nave and the vestibules of the court, 16 the thresholds and the
narrow windows and the galleries all around the three of them, opposite
the threshold, were paneled with wood all around, from the floor up to
the windows (now the windows were covered), 17 to
the space above the door, even to the inner room, and on the outside.
And on all the walls all around, inside and outside, was a measured
pattern. 18 It was carved of cherubim and palm trees, a palm tree between cherub and cherub. Every cherub had two faces: 19 a
human face toward the palm tree on the one side, and the face of a
young lion toward the palm tree on the other side. They were carved on
the whole temple all around. 20 From the floor to above the door, cherubim and palm trees were carved; similarly the wall of the nave.

There was also a wood table “This is the table that is before the Lord.”  This table was three cubits high, two cubits long, and two cubits broad.   It stood before the Holy Place.  Again wood paneling surrounded where it stood. 

I have to admit, I have a hard time knowing what to take away from this.  I know that if I were Ezekiel I’d be standing there is awe at the sheer size of everything.  Trying to somehow take it all in.   I wonder of the significance of the lion faces on the cherubs. Overall though, I’m just amazed at the size and the details offered to Ezekiel and wonder what tomorrow will bring.

All this praise shown to our Lord God.  Creator, One who shows mercy, his providence, his grace, all these reasons to praise the Lord.   By his creation, his people, with their hearts, their hands, their voices.   PRAISE the Lord eh?

Written by Henry F. Lyte back in 1834.

Henry Francis Lyte was in 1793 in Scotland but was orphaned at an early age.  A poet who served as a pastor in Devonshire, England.  He died in France in 1847.  Before passing away he authored two books of poetry and hymns.  Po­ems Chief­ly Re­li­gious, 1833 & 1845 and The Spir­it of the Psalms, 1834  (Source cyber hymnal)

While pastoring a church, Mr. Lyte didn’t have a true calling of the Lord, not really understanding the faith.  A dying priest’s comments got him studying the bible, and a true conversion happened thereafter.  The dying priest “convinced Lyte that both had earlier been mistaken in not having taken the Epistles of St.Paul “in their plain and literal sense.“” (source wiki)

Mr. Lyte also wrote Abide with Me, and wrote a few other pieces of literature, such as “his Talks on the Lord’s Prayer

I just thought this rendition below was interesting: Chinese I think…. singing this old hymn.   The organist played well too.. see how focused he was?

This song immediately popped into my head when I saw the word Weak was our word prompt for the day.
It’s funny you know.
The older I get the more I realize that God is my strength.
When I was young I knew that God could move mountains if he so desired.
I knew this.
I didn’t count on it though.
I counted on my strength and ability to see me through by the end of the day.
But as I mature… I’m a whole 51 years old eh… I see more of God in action.
As  he helps me through a day when I feel grumpy because my body is yelling at me.
His strength keeps me from yelling at the lad or making hubby feel horrid just because I do.
Knowing that he has my back helps me from feeling discouraged when an highly anticipated litter of bunnies proves to not come about, or dies, or a possum gets into the rabbitry and wrecks havoc. 
These small things help me to rest secure when bigger things happens like church closures and job searches begin.   
I can’t say that I always rest easy (because that would be a lie) but it helps me to rest more secure that in the end, God will work it out.

STEM: 3D St. Peter’s Basilica

I know that STEM is more than building 3D puzzles, it’s doing math, engineering, science and technology.  Using all those things.  I get that.  🙂  The way I see it though is… 3D Puzzles are engineering and technology.  The science eh… perhaps a bit iffy and the math well.. not really other than the need to finesse the puzzle as sometimes the pieces don’t fit perfectly.   So how do I add that to make this a proper STEM activity?

We can pick up the science and the math through reading and video can we not?

For instance I liked this video because it taught us to take care when looking at history, that looking at it from different perspectives broadens our knowledge.

And we can see the science and math of how they were built though videos like this:
Which broadens our understanding as we build a 3D Puzzle. 

What did we learn about St. Peter’s Basilica?

  •  commissioned by Pope Julius II
  • started in 1506 and completed in 1615
  • originally designed around the shape of a Greek cross, this was later changed to a Latin cross 
  • Michelango was a chief architect

And because video is more interesting to listen to and occasionally watch while building heres’s another video.

So building a 3D puzzle can indeed be a STEM project. 🙂   You just need to work around what it isn’t eh?  🙂

This build wasn’t an easy one to do. The pieces were sticky and quite a few of them needed to be trimmed in order to fit into the holes probably.  It tested the patience of the lad and I quite a bit.
