Hymn Study: Come Thou Almighty King

July 3, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters, and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: Hallelujah! For our Lord God almighty reigns. Revelation 19:6

Come Thou Almighty King is a hymn I am very familiar with, spelling out for us who God is.

Originally sung to the tune “God save the King” the national anthem for Britain.   Now obviously that wasn’t going to work in Britain, so a new tune was developed to go along with these words.

This song has been around since about 1755, with different authors being ascribed to it but none proven.   Currently no one has a real certainty about who the author is.  For more on this, I suggest you visit here.

Hymnologist Albert Bailey characterizes the hymn in this manner: “The
hymn is a prayer for the presence of Christ to inspire a congregation in
the hour of worship. God is addressed under three forms: as Father, the
timeless “Ancient of Days” whose function is to rule (stanza 1); as
Incarnate Word, the spirit of holiness whose function is to bless and
conquer (stanza 2); as Comforter, the indwelling source of joy and power
(stanza 3); and finally as the mystic combination, the Holy Trinity, in
whose presence we shall spend an eternity of love and adoration (stanza
4).”

Lyrics:
1 Come, thou almighty King,
help us thy name to sing;
help us to praise.
Father, all glorious,
o’er all victorious,
come, and reign over us,
Ancient of Days.
2 Come, thou incarnate Word,
gird on thy mighty sword;
scatter thy foes.
Let thine almighty aid
our sure defense be made,
our souls on thee be stayed;
thy wonders show.
3 Come, holy Comforter,
thy sacred witness bear
in this glad hour.
Thou who almighty art,
now rule in every heart,
and ne’er from us depart,
Spirit of power.
4 To thee, great One in Three,
eternal praises be
hence evermore!
Thy sovereign majesty
may we in glory see,
and to eternity
love and adore.

Hymn Study: Whiter than Snow

June 26, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

I have to admit that I not had a chance to sing this hymn very often. I know the chorus fairly well, but I need to follow the hymnbook for the verses. Needless to say though, it’s a rather nice hymn that reminds us of how we look to the Lord when we are his own.

Whiter than Snow was written by James Nicholson who lived c. 1828-1876.  He was born in Ireland and came over when he was around 25 years old.

 James Nicholson spent much of life as a clerk
in the post office in Philadelphia. He was always active in the work
of the Wharton Street Methodist Episcopal Church. The hymn was first
published in a pamphlet titled “Joyful Songs” in 1872. The hymn’s
popularity greatly increased with its inclusion in the well-known Gospel
Hymns series published by Sankey and Bliss.
(source)

He spent about 20 years in Philadelphia, eventually moving in c.1871 to work in the post office in Washington, DC.

This hymn is based on Ps51:7 – “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”

Lyrics:
  1. Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole;
    I want Thee forever to live in my soul;
    Break down every idol, cast out every foe—
    Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
    • Refrain:
      Whiter than snow, yes, whiter than snow,
      Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
    •
  2. Lord Jesus, let nothing unholy remain,
    Apply Thine own blood and extract every stain;
    To get this blest cleansing, I all things forego—
    Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
  3. Lord Jesus, look down from Thy throne in the skies,
    And help me to make a complete sacrifice;
    I give up myself, and whatever I know—
    Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
  4. Lord Jesus, for this I most humbly entreat,
    I wait, blessed Lord, at Thy crucified feet,
    By faith for my cleansing, I see thy blood flow—
    Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
  5. Lord Jesus, Thou seest I patiently wait;
    Come now and within me a new heart create;
    To those who have sought Thee Thou never said’st “No”—
    Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
  6. The blessing by faith, I receive from above;
    Oh, glory! my soul is made perfect in love;
    My prayer has prevailed, and this moment I know,
    The blood is applied, I am whiter than snow.

Hymn Study: Jesus, I Come

June 19, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

 This past Sunday we sang this hymn and I wanted to share it with you.

Jesus I come was written by William
T. Sleeper in 1887. Mr. Sleeper was a home missionary serving with the Congregational Church in Massachusetts for over 30 years.   The tune I am familiar with was written by George Stebbins.  Mr. Sleeper also wrote the hymn Ye Must be Born Again.   Beyond that, little is known about this evangelist and part-time hymn writer.

Lyrics:
1. Out of my bondage, sorrow and night,

Jesus, I come; Jesus I come.

Into Thy freedom, gladness and light,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of my sickness into Thy health,

Out of my wanting and into Thy wealth,

Out of my sin and into Thyself,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

2. Out of my shameful failure and loss,

Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come.

Into the glorious gain of Thy cross,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of earth’s sorrows into Thy balm,

Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm,

Out of distress into jubilant psalm,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

3. Out of unrest and arrogant pride,

Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come.

Into Thy blessed will to abide,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of myself to dwell in Thy love,

Out of despair into raptures above,

Upward forever on wings like a dove,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

4. Out of the fear and dread of the tomb,

Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come.

Into the joy and light of Thy home,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of the depths of ruin untold,

Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold,

Ever Thy glorious face to behold,

Jesus, I come to Thee.

I’ll leave you with a tune by Thompson.  It’s a rather different tune to me, but it might be one you are more familiar with.

Today.. it’s the Letter U for blogging through the Alphabet.

June 6, 2017 By Annette1 10 Comments

E.T. Phone Home..

I don’t know about you, but I really remember that movie and need to show it to my lad sometime.  🙂

Now with that in mind.. I want you to think back to Canada turning 100 years and wanting to find a good way to commemorate it.

It’s two years before the first men even walked on the moon, years before images came back from Mars and what not.

BUT The government decided to do something you might think is a bit odd. They helped a small town in Alberta put up a UFO landing pad.  St. Paul was designated a centennial city.

Pretty neat eh?

Like I mean that SERIOUSLY.

Who thinks of putting in a UFO landing pad?   Only us creative Canadians.  🙂   (grinning widely here eh?)

It was put up (with no public funds being used) at a time when people were highly optimistic about space travel. Wouldn’t it be cool to explore space and possibly find alien species!?!?!?!

I found this image on TripAdvisor

This photo of Ufo Landing Pad is courtesy of TripAdvisor

St. Paul, Alberta wanted to do something different from all the other towns around them as a drawing card.. no oversized food or furniture for them!   How about the world’s first UFO landing pad?   Make the aliens feel welcome yes?  And … if in welcoming aliens you made yourself a tourist attraction.. ALL THE BETTER!  (see this article).

Built as part of the Canadian centennial celebration in 1967, St. Paul,
Alberta has an official UFO landing welcome site. Weighing just over 130
tons, the large flat concrete structure contains a time capsule to be
opened on the 100-year anniversary of the pad’s opening in 2067. (source)

It’s actually a rather informative centre, teaching people about UFO’s and various sightings.  You’ll find photos of possible landing sites, mysterious Cattle mutilations and crop circles.

A large map of Canada has been made with stones that come from each of the provinces.  This map is found at the back of the pad.

This image below is from CTC News.

Check out this video of the Landing Pad. You may wish to shut your sound off unless you like music playing…

Anyways, I am so glad you joined me here today, I hope you will visit with Amanda as well and learn all about “Ugly”.  If you have an alphabet blogging post, do join in won’t you?

Hymn Study: Oh the Deep Deep Love of Jesus

June 5, 2017 By Annette1 2 Comments

Have you ever sat back and listened to a bunch of men around you sing a hymn together?  Just listened to those deep voices of men praising God together?

I had the privilege on Thursday of doing just that.

I joined hubby for the closing session of Banner of Truth conference this year, along with my 11 year old son.    The men sang “Oh the Deep Deep Love of Jesus”.

It was just LOVELY, seriously LOVELY to sit back and listen.

Here is the session:

Here are the Lyrics:

O the deep, deep love of Jesus, vast, unmeasured, boundless, free!
Rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me!
Underneath me, all around me, is the current of Thy love
Leading onward, leading homeward to Thy glorious rest above!

O the deep, deep love of Jesus, spread His praise from shore to shore!
How He loveth, ever loveth, changeth never, nevermore!
How He watches o’er His loved ones, died to call them all His own;
How for them He intercedeth, watcheth o’er them from the throne!

O the deep, deep love of Jesus, love of every love the best!
’Tis an ocean full of blessing, ’tis a haven giving rest!
O the deep, deep love of Jesus, ’tis a heaven of heavens to me;
And it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to Thee!

I found it very difficult to find a video of men singing this lovely old hymn.  Wasn’t crazy about it but it’s not a horrid rendition, just seemed very fast.  🙂

Anyways, this hymn was written by: S.Trevor Francis.  A man who loved open air preaching and writing hymns.  He was a young man going through..what some might call a time of troubles.. troubling enough that he was tempted to end it all.  But then asked himself… do you love Jesus.   His answer?  “I do believe with my whole heart.”  His faith reaffirmed, he continued working his way onward.

This hymn speaks to his love for the Lord God.  Pretty cool eh?

I’ll leave you with this rendition.

Sharing My Open Tabs

May 28, 2017 By Annette1 4 Comments

 So every once in a while I get a whack of open tabs in my browsers and I want to keep them but don’t always know where to put them so I’m going to plunk them down here and see what you all make of them.  🙂

From random conversations, books read & general homeschooling.

In physics we were learning about a plumb line so I have this page of images saved for when the lad says “what’s a plumb line again mom?”   For those who don’t know a plumb line is “a line with a plumb attached to it, used for finding the depth of water or determining the vertical on an upright surface.”

KodKod.   It’s a type of wild cat!   You can learn more here.

http://wildcatsmagazine.nl/wild-cats/chilean-cat-or-kodkod-leopardus-guigna/

Lori told me about this program called Quizlet.  I am intending to add to my freebies over here but simply haven’t gotten around to it yet.

This really cool version of the Periodic Table.   Planning to link it up on the freebies as well, but you know.. life happens.

Random Stuff:

Dear Homeschooler has a camping link up that I’ve been intending to put some things on and again… been rather busy.

Quarto.   Just because I’ve been doing a few reviews for them and wanted to check out what else they represented.  I am hopeful that I can get a few more to do.  🙂

Breathe Conference.   I want to go to this conference.  I want to apply for the scholarship but am needing to stop feeling intimidated by the idea.

TownWideYard Sale.  it’s yard sales…what can I say?   🙂

How to Cut Glass.  It’s just fascinating and I want to try doing this sometime.

 Mystery Science.   I’ve been checking out some of these stuff off and on for a while.  Need to link it on my freebies page yet too.

All about Birds.  Another one I want to save.  I’ve had this one on my browser since my son took a birding class last spring.   Along with this other bird related one. What Bird.

Fun way to Introduce Chemistry.  What can i say… looks like a fun game!

and that’s about it.  There’s also a few recipes saved on the tablet, but that’s cause I want to blog about them with pictures of the food I made.  🙂

Hymn Study: Seed to Sow

May 22, 2017 By Annette1 1 Comment

Looking up that Michael W. Smith song the other day reminded me of this song that I thoroughly enjoy listening to. I used to beat out the song when swimming. Hot summer days with music dancing in my head and playing out in the water. Ah.. it was fun and good! But seriously if you think about the words of the song, you will see the church in action. How everyone is different in the church, with different skill sets that make the church what it is. Helping the church to grow, and God’s truth to be seen. So many different people to reach with the gospel, and so many different people God can use to help them see the way.

Michael W. Smith’s video

Lyrics
 (chorus in Lugandan)
Kimu nkimaanyi
Buli muntu alina ensiigo
Omutima gwo gukulung ‘aamye
Buli muntu alina ensiigo
Some people quietly reveal
In the manner of the meek
Some people shout the way they feel
To a radical degree
Some people sing it to express
While others hear another call
Some people speak with subtleness
Some don’t rely on words at all
But let me tell you ’bout…
(chorus)
One thing I know
Everybody’s got a seed to sow
Let your heart of hearts
Take you down the road
Everybody’s got a seed to sow
We all are pieces of the whole
With different feelings to evoke
Giving distinction to the role
Different players-different strokes
But let me tell you ’bout…
(chorus)
Some people walk
Some people race
Some people vary in their pace
But God can use what you can give
Within the mystery of His ways
Don’t underestimate…
(chorus)
Kimu nkimaanyi
Buli muntu alina ensiigo
Omutima gwo
Gukulung ‘aamye
Buli muntu alina ensiigo
