Profile: Henry Hudson

I realized this morning that I neglected to do my blogging through the alphabet post.  This week we are on the letter H.  So Welcome one and all to blogging through the alphabet with Amanda and myself.   🙂

When I mentioned it to my hubby he said “Hudson Bay or the Hudson Bay Company.”

Since mentioning one without the other doesn’t make a lot of sense to me so I figured doing a profile on Henry Hudson might work just as well.  🙂   He made four sea-faring journeys.

Henry Hudson as was sea-faring explorer back in the 1600’s.   He discovered Hudson Bay but actually thought he had discovered the Pacific Ocean at the time, this during his last voyage of 1610-1611.

 He was a rather indecisive leader and his crew talked of mutiny when they sailed into the bay and were stuck there for the winter.   When the ice broke in the spring and all the men wanted to return home to England, Hudson wanted to push on in his search for the North West passage.  His men mutinied, he was put over board in a rowboat along with his son and the injured men, and was never heard from again.

He was known for being an excellent navigator but a poor leader of men.  The men who mutinied against him were not convicted of the crime and found jobs on other boats.

He was a determined explorer.  He found new hunting regions, explored new sections of land and ocean and just at his ultimate quest… to find the NorthWest passage.

Numerous places are named after him.  Hudson Bay led to the Hudson Bay Company.  We have the Hudson River, Hudson Straits, Hudson Stone, Henry Hudson Bridge as well as various schools, streets and the like.

The other day my lad was complaining about his nose hurting, dad looked over and said “oh, pimple!”

And my heart just dropped.

TOTALLY unexpected.  My goal is to raise a God-fearing young man, who knows how to work and have fun, who WANTS to leave home and make his own way in the world.

BUT ACK!!!   A pimple…just totally threw me off and made me want my little boy again.     The boys laughed at me they did.   Mockery is a good way to ground a person again isn’t it?  🙂

Anywho.. moving on to our week.

Monday was a lazy day.  Honestly.  I was still on “I was away all weekend doing nothing and want that to continue” mode.   The lad did his basics and then we left for London.  He camped out at gramma’s for the afternoon while Jim and I schleped about town.

I had a whack of books for sale in the trunk and met their new owners later in the afternoon.  I simply LOVE selling books and stuff.  Meeting new people and doing small talk… It’s a wonderful thing.  (yes, I know.. I’m weird).

Tuesday we headed off to the Science Centre in Toronto.  We took in the new exhibit and an IMAX movie called “think big”.  We wandered a bit more of the museum but then hunger struck.  We had a bit of a shorter day in the end, but it was still a good day.

Wednesday was the Food Bank and schooling, Thursday and Friday schooling again.   Friday I made a bunch of Tuna Recipes (you’ll see them later on the blog). The lad has been sewing a new pokemon figure and on Thursday asked me to show him how to use the sewing machine.   So today he’s been sewing up a storm and having a hoot!    It is wonderful to see that passion and excitement.

Tomorrow hubby is off to a Denominational Meeting.  He’s supposed to be there for 8 a.m. but he’s considering going late.  After all…. without having a pastorate it’s not like they can get mad at him or anything?   Give him a chance to get a touch more sleep eh?  Some freedom eh?

The lad is really really interested in what people think of his latest research project.  He’d be delighted if folks would comment on it.  The Lad’s Research: First Native Hunting Methods.

Purpose in Blogging

Recently I have been reading that if a person wants to have a successful blog they need to be great right from the start, honing their craft right from the very beginning.  That if they don’t have great material right from the beginning that they might as well not bother, cause all people will remember them for is their less than stellar work.

Do we really have that much expectations of people?

To expect perfection right from the beginning?   Do we not allow learning curves anymore?   Why do we put so  much pressure on folks?

All this information out there on this is the way to a bang buster blog…..but you have to do it all just so and write perfectly and have great graphics, and pin everyone else materials and …. the list goes on.

So much pressure to do it all correctly or …. the message is….don’t bother or expect only for others be noticed or bothered about cause that first impression is all that matters.

I find that sad.

What about seeing what the true purpose is….honing a skill, sharing information important to the blogger, teaching/giving a reader new information.
Walking your way through what is most important to that person.
Knowing that telling folks to do it all perfectly right from the start is the only way to go, or you might as well forget about it.

Is there  one grace allowed, no time or gradual growth?   Should one really give up if they haven’t perfected the craft in blogging before they even begin?

Is there really no point?  No purpose?

Sometimes I wonder….

We planned a bit of a short week this week.   Plans to go away this weekend, a vehicle in need of repair, and knowing the learning takes place in many different ways.  🙂  School happened!   Life happened.  And it was good!  🙂

Monday 
Today was family day, so the lad did his minimal schooling that he does on days off, and off we went to first take part in a demonstration Karate Class and then to go for a walk at the Pinery.   We did some pokemon going while we are there, toured through Grand Bend and just hung out together.

Tuesday 
Ice experiment…ooh.. fun with matches!

The lad made cake!
It was his turn to cook, he saw the cake in the cupboard and his eyes…. oh my, they just lit up!   “It’s my turn to cook!    Let’s have cake!”

He was a bit downcast when I mentioned that just cake for supper was not acceptable… which led him to ask for helped in making perogies.

Dad, not being a lover of perogies opted to make himself some other dish instead.

Wednesday 
Food bank.   Regular schooling.  The lad pushed hard and was done by 1230.  🙂  
Had a lovely walk together in the afternoon the lad and I did.   New Pokemon out and running around, so we had to chase them down.  🙂

Thursday 
School, the lad’s report this week on the Caribou.
Garbage day, lovely weather, car work to do… we called it done as early as we could. 🙂

The lad helped clean the cars out and helped dad work on the rear brakes.   They also fixed the side mirror that I accidentally broke off after over correcting from someone taking a corner really wide.   (I avoided being hit but the car mirror…not so much).

Friday 
Gramma coming over since hubby and I are heading out for the weekend.   
The lad did practical schooling today making cheese buns.  🙂  He’ll also be doing animal husbandry and housework with gramma this weekend.   

Saturday-Sunday
Hubby and I just schleped around together.    We had a wonderfully relaxing weekend doing absolutely nothing but wandering around together, looking and talking and just being alone without distraction.

Where the lad learns early start, early end.

Monday:
Basics done quickly, wants to do no school at Gramma’s other than playing a game and reading.

Tuesday:
Schooling done: but I’m sick so stayed out of the way.    He did everything on his list easily and quickly.  He’s learned starting earlier means he is done earlier.  New sword was made.

Wednesday:
On fire with life today, schooling done quickly.   No Foodbank since I was still sick.
Sword broken in stupid accident.  New components purchased.  My fault the accident happened so headachy and icky feeling out we went to get needed supplies.    The lad worked on his iceberg experiment.   This is a redo of the experiment we tried last week but there were too many variables that were problematic.  The lad took the initiative to reconfigure it to be more accurate.  This allowed me to introduce writing a lab report in practice.  Been talking about it, now doing it.  He dictated this one to me.

Thursday:

On fire: schooling done quickly.
Introduced: reading about Canadians.  Picking one from three books I have, reading it and then telling me about it.   He was supposed to read one chapter but forgot the other day so read two today.   He narrated about Norman Bethune and Madeleine de Vercheres.

We had a pleasant surprise of learning more from an ART video about the human skeleton than from some of the medical ones we tried.

Friday:

I woke up feeling hollow and rather late…the lad was doing well with his schooling and was almost done. I asked him what his plans were for when he finished his schooling… he said “build a new sword mom”. I said okay… build a sword! I got a Huge THANK YOU and a hug and off he went.

Fridays is our do it different day… we do almost everything differently except for bible and history. We normally do art, some type of STEM project and a fun word knowledge book. The work he does building a sword easily qualifies as a STEM project so it was easy to let him go. 

Saturday:

The lad had “cadet-o-rama” today so was gone most of the day. Hubby and I went out for breakfast and then since he’s still not feeling well from the bug that soared through our house this week we went home and chilled.

I got a HUGE number of blog posts up and scheduled. We chatted and watched movies and just had a lovely quiet day. I also got the young bunnies photographed and my website updated. A good productive day.
