Hymn

Refiner’s Fire

January 6, 2019 By Annette1 2 Comments

We sang Refiner’s Fire in church on Sunday. It brought back campfire memories with college group singing.  🙂

Brian Doerksen wrote this song.  He’s a Canadian!  Imagine that!  I am so used to song writers being from the USA, Europe or Australia that it was very cool to discover that a Canadian wrote this one.  🙂    In fact, here he is singing his song.

Doerksen was involved with the Vineyard churches and produced many popular songs.   Refiner’s Fire was produced in 1990.

Lyrics

Purify my heart
Let me be as gold
And precious silver
Purify my heart
Let me be as gold
Pure gold, Lord

Refiner’s fire
My heart’s one desire
Is to be holy
Set apart for You Lord
I choose to be holy
Set apart for You My Master
Ready to do Your will

Purify my heart
Cleanse me from within
And make me holy
Purify my heart
Cleanse me from my sin
Deep within

Refiner’s fire
My heart’s one desire
Is to be holy
Set apart for You Lord
I choose to be holy
Set apart for You My Master
Ready to do Your will

Ready to do Your will
Ready to do Your will

Another Year is Dawning

December 30, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Looking at the New Year coming, just around the corner and I got to thinking about a hymn I could put up. This song popped into my head as I was watching McGyver and Maddy was learning her hubby from days past has a new family. The years passed as he had a new family. Anyways, I don’t know why it spawned the song “Another Year is Dawning” in my head but it did. Ergo… I’m sharing it with you.

Lyrics

  1. Another year is dawning, dear Father, let it be
    In working or in waiting, another year with Thee;
Another year of progress, another year of praise,
Another year of proving Thy presence all the days.
  2. Another year of mercies, of faithfulness and grace,
    Another year of gladness in the shining of Thy face;
    Another year of leaning upon Thy loving breast;
Another year of trusting, of quiet, happy rest.
  3. Another year of service, of witness for Thy love,
    Another year of training for holier work above;
Another year is dawning, dear Father, let it be
On earth, or else in Heaven, another year for Thee.

Frances Ridley Havergal is the author of this start of the year hymn.   I’ve written about her in these other hymn posts as well.

Il Tamburino (little drummer boy)

December 9, 2018 By Annette1 4 Comments

Germany, and Poland have been part of our Christmas celebration so far.  Today we move on to Italy.    Imagine my delight when I discovered Il Tamburino!  Also known as the Little Drummer Boy!

Il Tamburino (little drummer boy)

I found the three tenors singing it in Italian and English!  Oh… my heart is just smiling!  🙂

And here in Polish only.

And of course… from my favourite Christmas show.

Lyrics:

Come they told me
Pa rum pum pum pum
A new born king to see
Pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the king
Pa rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum
So to honor him
Pa rum pum pum pum
When we come
Pum pum pum pum
Pa rum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum
Pa rum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum
Pa rum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum pa rum
Little baby
Pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too
Pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
That’s fit to give our king
Pa rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you
Pa rum pum pum pum
Pa rum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum
Mary nodded
Pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time
Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for him
Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for him
Pa rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum
Then he smiled at me
Pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum
Come they told me
Pa rum pum pum pum
A new born king to see
Pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum
Me and my drum
Me and my drum
Me and my drum
Rum pum pum pum

Bóg się rodzi (God is Born)

December 2, 2018 By Annette1 1 Comment

Having done German last week, this week we move on to Poland.

Bóg się rodzi (God is Born) Polish Christmas song

Bóg się rodzi was written by Franciszek Karpinski in 1792.  He was known as a sentimental Polish poet and song writer. An author of  three books of poetry.  He worked as a tutor and later became a member of the Society of Friends of Science.

Sung in Polish with English lyrics overlaid

Lyrics:

Power weakens as God is born,
Is born for us on this dark world
Fire is frozen and time undone
As God thro’ Mary gives His Son.

Poverty surrounds Him there
For His crib a manger,
Shepherds kneel in the hay before Him,
Worshiping in stable bare.

Son of God, lift your hand up high
And grant your dearest blessing on us,
Give us your gift of wisdom
That we may bring to earth your kingdom in the sky.

Riches, honour, lose their worth,
Eternity is circumscrib’d
As God’s true Word is born on earth
And dwells with love us beside
And dwells amongst us in His love.

Suffering is granted Him
For His short mortal hour with us
God’s true Word is born on earth
And dwells with love us beside
And dwells amongst us in His love.

May we grow into that love
Which nursing Mary shows you now
For God’s true Word is born on earth
And dwells with love us beside
And dwells amongst us in His love.

A different version in polish only

God of Wonders

November 18, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

We sang this at church a couple of weeks ago and it’s a nice melodic song.   I’ve sung it often as a quiet song, but on the odd occasion, depending on the music leader or the musicians it’s quite boisterous.  Most of the time though, it’s a quiet thoughtful song.
God of Wonders
Written by Marc Byrd and Steve Hindalong, God of Wonders was used by NASA to wake up astronaut Michael Fossum (source). Steve Hindalong is a percussionist and drummer who also writes songs.  He’s been awarded several Dove awards.
Marc Byrd, also an American, played with the group Hammock.  He often collarborated with other artists.

Lyrics

Lord of all creation
Of the water, earth and sky
The Heavens are Your Tabernacle
Glory to the Lord on high
God of wonders, beyond our galaxy
You are holy, holy
The universe declares Your majesty
You are holy, holy
Lord of Heaven and Earth
Lord of Heaven and Earth
Early in the morning
I will celebrate the light
And when I stumble into darkness
I will call Your name by night
God of wonders, beyond our galaxy
You are holy, holy
The universe declares Your majesty
You are holy, holy
Lord of Heaven and Earth
Lord of Heaven and Earth
Hallelujah to the Lord of Heaven and earth
Hallelujah to the Lord of Heaven and earth
Hallelujah to the Lord of Heaven and earth
Holy, holy
Holy, holy
God of wonders, beyond our galaxy
You are holy, holy
The universe declares Your majesty
You are holy, holy
God of wonders, beyond our galaxy
You are holy, holy
The universe declares Your majesty
You are holy, holy
Lord of Heaven and Earth
Lord of Heaven and Earth

Like a River Glorious

November 4, 2018 By Annette1 2 Comments

Written by Francis R. Havergal, Like a river glorious calls us to remember the rest we find in the Lord God.

Like a River Glorious

Frances R. Havergal lived in the mid 1800’s, she didn’t have a long life but she filled it with poetry and music. She grew up in England, losing her mother at age 11.  Her father remarried and her step-mom strongly encouraged Frances to have faith in God. She wrote a number of hymns and a couple of books of poetry and devotions.  She was a smart child who took well to languages and memorized the New Testament and various other sections of the bible.  She suffered from poor health, but lived a peaceful life with her poetry and music. After her death a book for children was published. S.

Like a river glorious is God’s perfect peace,
Over all victorious, in its bright increase;
Perfect, yet it floweth fuller every day,
Perfect, yet it groweth deeper all the way.

Refrain:
Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blest
Finding, as He promised, perfect peace and rest.

Hidden in the hollow of His blessed hand,
Never foe can follow, never traitor stand;
Not a surge of worry, not a shade of care,
Not a blast of hurry touch the spirit there.

Every joy or trial falleth from above,
Traced upon our dial by the Sun of Love;
We may trust Him fully, all for us to do;
They who trust Him wholly find Him wholly true.

Beautiful Saviour, King of Creation

October 28, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Flipping through the Hymnal Lift up Your Hearts I came across this lovely hymn Beautiful Saviour.

beautiful saviour

There are a couple of disputes with this song, some saying author unknown, and others coming up with Munster Gesangbuch.   The translator seems to remain the same, being that of Joseph Seiss.  One source listed Munster Gesangbuch as the source for the hymn but not the author. It dates back to 1677.

Lyrics

1. Beautiful Savior,
King of Creation,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Truly I’d love Thee,
Truly I’d serve Thee,
Light of my soul, my Joy, my Crown.

2. Fair are the meadows,
Fair are the woodlands,
Robed in flowers of blooming spring;
Jesus is fairer,
Jesus is purer;
He makes our sorrowing spirit sing.

3. Fair is the sunshine,
Fair is the moonlight,
Bright the sparkling stars on high;
Jesus shines brighter,
Jesus shines purer,
Than all the angels in the sky.

4. Beautiful Savior,
Lord of the nations,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor,
Praise, adoration,
Now and forevermore be Thine!
