Hymn

How Sweet The Name of Jesus Sounds

August 26, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

I was looking for a hymn to post this week and this one caught my eye.  I’ve have sung it often over the years, it’s a short, easy to sing song based on Song of Solomon 1:3: which reads, “Your anointing oils are fragrant; your name is oil poured out; therefore virgins love you.”

how sweet the name of jesus sounds

John Newton is the author of this hymn. Preaching in a church in Olney he wanted to find a way to help the common people remember God’s word more clearly. This led him to start creating simple songs for them to learn, with easy melodies so they could more easily bring God into their lives.

Lyrics

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest.

Dear name! the rock on which I build,
My shield and hiding place,
My never failing treasury filled
With boundless stores of grace!

By Thee my prayers acceptance gain,
Although with sin defiled;
Satan accuses me in vain,
And I am owned a child.

Jesus! my shepherd, husband, friend,
O prophet, priest and king,
My Lord, my life, my way, my end,
Accept the praise I bring.

Weak is the effort of my heart,
And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see Thee as Thou art,
I’ll praise Thee as I ought.

Till then I would Thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath,
And may the music of Thy name
Refresh my soul in death!

O, How I love Jesus

August 19, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Leafing through the Hymnal from a church hubby preaches at frequently and I ran across this song I used to sing ALOT at a Baptist church I attended for a while.  It was a huge church and I still remember all those voices belting out the words to this song in happy melody.

The words to this hymn were written by Frederick Whitfield. This Englishman wrote about 30 hymns throughout his life.  He was the vicar at a variety of churches throughout England.

Lyrics

There is a name I love to hear,
I love to speak its worth;
It sounds like music in mine ear,
The sweetest name on earth.

Refrain
O how I love Jesus,
O how I love Jesus,
O how I love Jesus,
Because He first loved me!

It tells me of a Savior’s love,
Who died to set me free;
It tells me of His precious blood,
The sinner’s perfect plea.
Refrain

It tells me of a Father’s smile
Beaming upon His child;
It cheers me through this little while,
Through desert, waste, and wild.
Refrain

It tells me what my Father hath
In store for every day,
And though I tread a darksome path,
Yields sunshine all the way.
Refrain

It tells of One whose loving heart
Can feel my deepest woe;
Who in my sorrow bears a part,
That none can bear below.
Refrain

It bids my trembling heart rejoice;
It dries each rising tear;
It tells me, in a still small voice,
To trust and never fear.
Refrain

Jesus, the name I love so well,
The name I love to hear!
No saint on earth its worth can tell,
No heart conceive how dear.
Refrain

This name shall shed its fragrance still
Along this thorny road,
Shall sweetly smooth the rugged hill
That leads me up to God.
Refrain

And there, with all the blood-bought throng,
From sin and sorrow free,
I’ll sing the new eternal song
Of Jesus’ love to me.
Refrain

Once Again

July 29, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

We recently sang this Matt Redman song in church, it’s a nice one that I thought you might like as well.

Once again, matt redman

Matt Redman is an Englishman, who has written many praise and worship songs including Trading My Sorrows.  His early years were difficult being raised by an abusive step-father after his dad died of depression leading to suicide.  He works with conferences around the world and is based out of London. He is married with five children.

Lyrics

Jesus Christ, I think upon your sacrifice
You became nothing, poured out to death
Many times I’ve wondered at your gift of life
And I’m in that place once again

I’m in that place once again
And once again I look upon the cross where you died
I’m humbled by your mercy and I’m broken inside
Once again I thank you
Once again I pour out my life

Pour out our life’s to you
Now you are exalted to the highest place
King of the heavens, where one day I’ll bow
But for now I marvel at your saving grace
And I’m full of praise once again
Full of praise today
I’m full of praise once again

And once again I look upon the cross where you died
I’m humbled by your mercy and I’m broken inside
Once again I thank you
Once again I pour out my life
Oh I pour out mine heart at your cross
And once again I look upon the cross where you died
Jesus I’m humbled by your mercy and I’m broken inside
Once again I thank you
Once again I pour out my life

We bring our grateful heart to you
Thanking you Lord
Your sacrifice, we thank you Lord
Thank you for the cross
Thank you for the cross
Thank you for the cross, my friend

Oh thank you for the cross
Thank you for the cross
Thank you for the cross, my friend

Yes, thank you for the cross
Thank you for the cross
Thank you for the cross, my friend

Thank you for the cross
Thank you for the cross
Thank you for the cross, my friend

Thank you Lord
Thank you for the cross
Thank you for the cross, my friend

Thank you for the cross
Thank you for the cross
Thank you for the cross, my friend

My friend

Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

July 15, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

Have you ever sung this hymn by Walter C Smith?  Speaking to the truth about who God is and how we should praise him for who he is.  It’s a lovely song indeed.

Immortal, invisible god only wise

Written by Walter C Smith, he was a Scotsman who served in churches in Glasgow. London and Edinburgh.  A member of the Free Church of Scotland, he served as it’s moderator for a spell.

Lyrics

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish—but naught changeth Thee.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
Of all Thy rich graces this grace, Lord, impart
Take the veil from our faces, the vile from our heart.

All laud we would render; O help us to see
’Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee,
And so let Thy glory, almighty, impart,
Through Christ in His story, Thy Christ to the heart.

Knowing You Jesus

July 8, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

We sang this song a few weeks back in church and I thought I’d share it with you all today.  Knowing You Jesus.

Knowing You Jesus song by graham kendrick

This song was written by Graham Kendrick.  He has been described as the “father of modern worship music”.  He is based in the United Kingdom.  He was the spark behind “March for Jesus” (which I remember taking part in), and works with Compassion International.

Lyrics

All I once held dear, built my life upon
All this world reveres, and wars to own
All I once thought gain I have counted loss
Spent and worthless now, compared to this

Knowing you, Jesus
Knowing you, there is no greater thing
You’re my all, you’re the best
You’re my joy, my righteousness
And I love you, Lord

Now my heart’s desire is to know you more
To be found in you and known as yours
To possess by faith what I could not earn
All-surpassing gift of righteousness

Oh, to know the power of your risen life
And to know You in Your sufferings
To become like you in your death, my Lord
So with you to live and never die

I sing the Mighty Power of God

July 1, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

I turned to my trusty hymnbook for today’s hymn as everything we’ve sung recently I’ve already shared with you.   I Sing the Mighty Power of God.

I sing the mighty power of God hymnWritten by Isaac Watts, is the author of a good number of hymns including: Joy to the World, Come Holy Spirit Heavenly Dove, From all that Dwell below the skies,  and more.  He had an affinity for verse since the time he was quite young, he wrote many hymns throughout his life.  A nonconformist he served as a pastor in the Mark Lane Congregational Chapel, also working as tutor. He is recognised as the “Godfather of English Hymnody”.

Lyrics

I sing the mighty pow’r of God, that made the mountains rise,
That spread the flowing seas abroad, and built the lofty skies.
I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day;
The moon shines full at His command, and all the stars obey.

I sing the goodness of the Lord, who filled the earth with food,
Who formed the creatures through the Word, and then pronounced them good.
Lord, how Thy wonders are displayed, where’er I turn my eye,
If I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky.

There’s not a plant or flow’r below, but makes Thy glories known,
And clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order from Thy throne;
While all that borrows life from Thee is ever in Thy care;
And everywhere that we can be, Thou, God, art present there.

Lily of the Valley

June 24, 2018 By Annette1 Leave a Comment

My hubby was preaching this morning in a small church that regularly asks him to attend.  They like his preaching and they feed us a lovely meal afterwards.  Anyways, I was browsing through their alternative hymnbook this morning and was reminded of this old song.   Lily of the Valley.

lily of the valley

Charles W Fry was a bricklayer by trade and a versatile musician.  He played violin, cello, piano and more. He led an orchestra at his Weslayan chapel.   Lily of the Valley is one of four songs that has survived. He was a Scotsman.  His band helped Salvation Army founder William Booth in evangelism campaigns.  He was buried in Scotland.

On New Year’s Day 1884, a monument to The first bandmaster of the Salvation Army was unveiled over his grave. On it was inscribed a verse Fry wrote:
The former things are past,
And ended is the strife,
I’m safe home at last!
I live an endless life!  (source)

This like this Willie Nelson version, I hope you do too. 🙂

Lyrics:

I’ve found a friend in Jesus, He’s everything to me,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The Lily of the Valley, in Him alone I see
All I need to cleanse and make me fully whole.
In sorrow He’s my comfort, in trouble He’s my stay;
He tells me every care on Him to roll.

Refrain:
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.

He all my grief has taken, and all my sorrows borne;
In temptation He’s my strong and mighty tow’r;
I’ve all for Him forsaken, and all my idols torn
From my heart and now He keeps me by His pow’r.
Though all the world forsake me, and Satan tempt me sore,
Through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal.

He’ll never, never leave me, nor yet forsake me here,
While I live by faith and do His blessed will;
A wall of fire about me, I’ve nothing now to fear,
From His manna He my hungry soul shall fill.
Then sweeping up to glory to see His blessed face,
Where rivers of delight shall ever roll.

I like how they sang this version with the parts as that’s how I remember learning it as adult when I attended a Baptist church for a while. 🙂
