A day/week reviewed

Highlights of the Week May 14-20

May 21, 2017 By Annette1 6 Comments

In no particular order, some of the highlights of the week

Hubby preached a sermon in this church again.

New roof put up on one of the rabbitry buildings.   I had gone into the rabbitry on Wednesday or Thursday this week to do something and spotted one of my girls panting, so promptly removed the winter covering tarp.  This necessitated a building of a wooden roof.   We’ve done tarps one them for the past few years, and found last year the tarps were ripping.  This one was the worst so we did it first, I hope to do the other in two weeks.   I put the lattice sides on it last year and it greatly improved airflow which was a good thing.    Good to have the rabbits cooler again. We worked as a family to put it all together… cutting, drilling, moving etc.  busy hard work.  Hubby put up a “thing” to help with taking the bed off the truck as well…that was hard work man…digging post holes…he has way too many blisters.

My buttercups are blooming!!!!

We’ve been working our way through the human body and we often add videos.  Currently we are on the teeth.  So we watched what the lad said “this was a good video mom, I learned a lot and do a bunch of things wrong”.  We totally ignored all the product placement stuff.

Working on our Physics STEM kit.  We learned about plumb lines and the center of gravity.   It was rather neat to teach about how a person’s center of gravity changes how they move and how that affects doing things like Karate, adding stability and such like.   Seeing the practical use of science in everyday life was a “wow” moment for the lad and provoked great discussion.

Have you seen my beautiful lilac bush?

Working our way through the Hawaiian Frog from ArtAchieve.  Next week we are going to add colour to him.  Hopefully he’ll turn out well, I’m a bit concerned that I made him too small.  The lad wasn’t ready for me to take a picture of his rendition.

Anyways, those are the highlights of MY week, what were the highlights of yours?

A Day in the Life – May 11

May 12, 2017 By Annette1 4 Comments

Normally I do review of the entire week but today was such a good day I wanted to share that with you.

It started with a shock!
I was having a marvellous dream after having a hard time getting to sleep the night before.   Snoozing and snoring away when suddenly “Good morning mom!”   I about jumped out of my skin!  OH MY.. not good.   This was followed by “sorry, sorry mom!  I thought you were awake!!”

Apparently the lad had been up since 730 had some of his schooling done and wanted to touch base with me before moving forward.   GACK!!   Never wake up the mom!!   ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyways, I managed to drag myself out of bed, and down for breakfast of cereal and a muffin, the lad and I chatted about day plans and all was good.   I took care of the bunnies and noticed the lad had already cared for his mice.

I wanted to get working on the garden, but needed to make sure the lad was well situated with his schooling.  He needed some help getting going with Unlock Math, and mentioned how another math program we are using is WAY too easy for him… so could I contact them and tell them that?   So I have an email to write later tonight asking about course placement.

While he worked on his math, and later his typing, I got some seeds planted in the garden.  YEAH!!!   I got one garden done.   Then I pulled weeds out of another garden that already has peas in it (but needs something more).   OH!  And I hung out a load of laundry to dry.

I heard a “MOM!!!   I need you!” just as I finished so went in to find a lad wondering if we were doing ArtAchieve today or if it was going to wait til Friday.    Friday it was.   He grinned, so then the rest of the negotiating started.   Could writing his story wait, what about not doing science or apologia or …..   ๐Ÿ™‚     We settled on videos for science and history, and apologia will wait til next week where if he reads two pages a day it will be completely finished.

Lunch (I had soup, the lad had a bagel with cheese) and freetime for 1/2 an hour and then “lad, can you give me a hand?”  He was happy to help.  We built a small herb garden out of some old lumber we had laying around.

Unbeknownst to the lad I tossed in a wee bit of math… the lad thinks he’s horrid at estimating so I asked him how much dirt he thought it would hold and he found out he’s not so horrid at estimating!  WOOT WOOT!   But we had a seriously good time working together, the lad had fun holding wood, using a drill and saw and dumping in dirt.   Did you know that working out clumps with your bare feet is the fastest and bestest way to do it?   AND it feels really good on your feet apparently.  ๐Ÿ™‚

While the lad and I were working hubby was busy fixing the riding lawn mower for the church.   It was a bit of a frustration BUT at the end… isn’t it great to learn new skills and have success?  ๐Ÿ™‚

After we got this done we did a touch of shopping, I was out of feed for the bunnies and Hubby needed to pick something up.

Upon our return (having had a break from the heavy work) we set out to do some more.  We moved the snowblowers out of the garage into the back yard (to make room in the garage).   Not the best place to store them but hubby is looking at erecting a small shelter for them and the riding lawn mower to protect them in the summer.

Anways, moving the snowblowers into the back yard had necessitated moving a few other things. All of which needed a good hose down me thinking “do I want to move this or do I want to sell it?”  I’m
leaning toward selling it… but that might require some discussion with family.   The lad repotted his catnip plants (he sells it and makes crafts from it) and repotted a hosta for me.  So his garden bed this year holds amaryllis, a small flowering plant and all his catnip (he wants to move it with us).

We had an unpleasant surprise in a finding my rubbermaid tote (that I use to store supplies for the rabbitry)  full of water.  Everything was soaked and was quite the mess to clean up.  We even found a lightbulb full of water!!! (made us laugh and totally surprised dad)   But the pleasant result of it was my lad making his first terrarium.

Admittedly by end of day I was getting pretty tired… and then I needed to make supper. GACK!!!   It was the lads turn to cook but he was pretty wasted by then as well.

We ended up doing mac and cheese.. YES from a box as it was downright quick and easy!  I much prefer homemade.. but annie’s does make a decent boxed mac and cheese.

We quickly got the laundry off the line, garbage out to the curb, read our bedtime books, played a round of Clash Royale together and then the lad was off to bed.

Hubby and I watched Star Trek and Crimes Beyond Borders together and then it was getting on time for bed.   I talked with a friend for a while and then ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ  ๐Ÿ™‚  I had tried hard to finish this post last night but at the end of it all.. I was just fried!

Sharing this post over at Kym’s (when she gets her highlights post done).

The Week of American Goldfinches in Colour

May 6, 2017 By Annette1 4 Comments

Check it out… my Spring Bed is out in good form this week.  Must like all the rain we’ve been having!  I just love walking up and seeing them all in bloom… just makes my heart smile!

Saturday:
I brought this cutie to London.   DaisyHawk in one of my favourite does, but it was time for her to find a new home.   She’ll be living on a farm in St. Thomas.

Sunday:
Headed off to Kingsville so hubby could preach in the church of some friends.  Then had a lovely visit in the afternoon with them.  We went for a walk and my son was able to see Cactus growing in the wild in Ontario.

Monday:
We planned to go to London, but the lad developed a sore throat and was acting a touch troubled, so we called gramma who said “I’ll come your way”.  Once she arrived we headed out so we could get our taxes done, have a lunch out with hubby and so I could sell this cutie.

I bought a slingshot…
Tuesday:
The lad’s sore throat has resolved itself into a cold.  It’s a bleak rainy day.  We did some schooling with emphasis on “school should not cause tears” and chilled out in the afternoon doing laundry and watching movies.

Wednesday:
The lad was not feeling okay this morning yet, draggy and more apologetic than normal.  So he stayed home to do minimal schooling (just on-line stuff needed for reviews) and his reading.   I headed off to the

We had lunch together and chatted. I cleaned the fridge (being fairly brutal) and by the end we had a half empty fridge!!!

Finished the laundry from yesterday, did some blogging and the lad made me supper (eggs/bacon/cheese scramble).  Took pictures of my bunny babes and then decided to cut the lawn.  Not the smartest idea as now I’m really tired and sore.   BUT HEY!!   The lawn is done and now the rain can come again and it won’t be a jungle when it stops again (apparently not until Monday!!!!).

Hubby pointed out that our Regular Pairs of American Goldfinch are back and … are almost back to breeding plumage.

Thursday:
Today we did things differently than normal.  We made muffins, made the Millenium Falcon, built a hydraulic claw and made a simple drawing for art on Friday.   The lad did do his devotions and his Veritas Press History lesson.

Friday:
Dad had a funeral to preach so we dropped him off  as we headed off to visit a friend and do an art project.   Linoleum Printing.   It was rather fun to do!   Look!   I did a budgie!

Do you think it could be a good weapon?

April 29, 2017 By Annette1 4 Comments

Saturday:
We’d had tentative plans to go to a home and garden show but life proved very busy this week so we stayed home.  I got some gardening done, the lad worked on some big minecraft project he has going, and hubby did something (honestly can’t remember.. OH right.. he worked on a sermon).

Sunday:
Hubby preached at a wee tiny church, they fed us lunch, I looked around in their church and oh my goodness it was beautiful in the main sanctuary!!!

I went for a walk in the afternoon with the lad from what I recall.   Oh I did!   I took some pictures of the flowers etc that I saw along the way.

Monday:
Kumon Math Pre-Algebra, The Typing Coach, Reading from Shepherd, Spy, Potter and the Star Namer, Smartick, Veritas Press History and Bible, and… something else that neither of us can remember. ๐Ÿ™‚   He then went off to visit gramma while Dad and I kibitized about town .. We had lunch at 168 Sushi, went for a walk, and kept ourselves busy for a spell.  When we got home the lad wanted to go for a walk with me so out we headed, walking around the dam and it’s lake.

Tuesday:
Kumon Math Pre-Algebra, The Typing Coach, Reading from Shepherd, Spy, Potter and the Star Namer, Smartick, Veritas Press History and Bible, Art Achieve, and Digital Savvy.

We watched this really interesting video while doing our Art Achieve.

The
lad’s turn to make supper so he learned to make hamburger buns from
scratch as he wants to have hamburgers for supper, and we went for walk. The Lad had a hoot helping to make buns this afternoon, and I learned that girls and boys have a different perspective on kneading bread.  ๐Ÿ™‚  The lad asked “Do you think it could be a good weapon?  Imagine it stuck to the visor of a knight’s helmet!”
Wednesday:
I spent the morning at the Foodbank and the lad stayed home to work on his Cacti Presentation for the Project Fair Friday night.   In the evening he has karate and I’ll be going to the Hospital Rummage Sale.  Hubby had an appreciation luncheon to go to at one of the Nursing homes he helps preach at.   I found six books and 6 shirts at the sale.  I went looking for shirts that would work as scrum around the house and rabbitry as almost all my old shirts have holes that my lad is telling me I shouldn’t have holes, so I’m thinking they aught to be dumped eh?   (turned into rabbitry or shop rags more likely)
After the luncheon hubby mowed the rather large church lawn… took forever it seemed.  The lad accompanied him so he could pick up all the big branches and get them out of dad’s way.  I mowed the lawn at home… boy… it’s always a slog doing the first few cuts of the year…the grass is so thick in the back.  But it’s done and it looks SO much better.   I was able to enjoy the flowers in the front yard while I cut though.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Thursday:
Schooling and gardening.   It was a simple but focused day.   Oh, we started a new studying using SchoolhouseTeachers.com as Veritas Press Bible course is done for the year.    The lad tightened up his Cacti presentation and I took some pictures of the rabbits.  We also went for a walk around town.  I was reminded WHY I like walking trails as my feet were sore by the time we got home walking around in town on the sidewalks.

Friday:
The last day of HOPE day Co-op.. ever so depressing… I like having a co-op to teach and do things with and seeing the creativity in others just boggles my mind.  ๐Ÿ™‚

The Week of the Easter Mouse

April 22, 2017 By Annette1 4 Comments

Sunday after a nice afternoon with the family I came home to this mound on my patio.  Needless to say, as much as I like ants and think they do much good in the world, I don’t want them three feet from my back door building a mound.  So I medicated them and hopefully this bunch will fail to return and WILL NOT invade my house this summer.

Monday:
After a busy weekend, staying at home seemed like the best thing to do today.  The lad and I did some gardening together.  My young digger had a huge amount of fun moving and then replanting my parsley and chervil patch.   Who woulda thought that it would be so much fun digging holes and plopping a plant in it.  The dirt was just a flying!!!

Tuesday:
Off to London town!   The lad did a wee bit of schooling and then headed out with gramma in the afternoon.  He went with us first to fill out his application for a passport as we’ll be heading to PA at the end of May.

Wednesday
A day of schooling at home.  Thought admittedly we got to a really late start.   We were all total slugs, so much so the lad ran out of time to get all his schooling done, so he promised me he would do his math the next day.

Thursday:
Off to the Alymer Dairy Museum today.  The lad promised to do his math on the way there but ended up doing right before bed. The Museum was pretty good.   Filled with memorabilia but the staff also put on a good program for the children and youth that attended… making butter, ice cream, learning about cartooning and more.  See look… I made a sponge bob!

Friday:
Today was co-op day so off we went for a morning of learning, me teaching Zentangles, Hubby teaching gym, and the lad learning about natural disasters and Biblical Feasts.
We learned the spider tag is not as fun as one might think.

Easter Week Brings Changes

April 15, 2017 By Annette1 4 Comments

So we only did three actual days of schooling this week and only two of them were relatively normal.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday..
Normally we go to London on Mondays, but I still had a headache and the thought of moving didn’t set well with me.   I did a few things in the morning while my head was sorta still in place, but then my head fell apart on me and I spent the rest of the day hiding from the light.

Tuesday…
We needed some groceries so we headed out at noon to take care of that.  The lad had a lovely visit with gramma and they even went out for a treat at McD’s.  The lad had pushed hard to get his homeschooling done and only needed to do his reading at gramma’s to be finished.

Wednesday..
The lad stayed home to do some really focused schoolwork while I went to the foodbank.  It was a delivery day and we were short staffed so by the time I got home I was totally tired, and then sat in my chair doing some blog posts.   I had hoped to clean the bookroom and all that, but… you know when you gotta rest, you gotta rest.  I did manage to take some pictures and list bunnies for sale at Easter so it’s not like I was a total slug.

Thursday…
Off to Kitchener.  The lad was SUPPOSED TO do some car-schooling but got distracted by playing tablet games.   He said “I’ll do it later” but later turned into potting some of his new cactus plants.  So his schooling that day turned into doing math as he figured out what he wanted to buy, if he had enough money, wanted to spend the money required for his initial desires or put things back and then in doing some gardening.  Figuring out how to plant the biggest cactus with tons of spines was a bit of a challenge but between the two us, it got planted.

The evening was filled with a soup and bun dinner at the church where my son does Cadets.   I made a rice/veggie/chicken soup that met my son’s approval.

Friday…
Good Friday.   This morning Gramma came up and went to church with us.  We had a lovely dinner with a roast beef made by hubby, taters, veggies, Easter bread made by yours truly, Chicken by gramma, along with dessert, Cut up tomatoes requested by a boy child as he set the table.

Saturday..
These kiddos will be heading to London with me tomorrow and finding new homes.  Hubby has some stuff to pick up and … that’s about it for our week.

Sunday …
Potluck dinner at my mom’s with as many of us as can make it. ๐Ÿ™‚  We’ll be making Shredded beef and I need to cut up some celery for a veggie tray.  ๐Ÿ™‚  It’ll be a happy Easter eh?

Cactus and A Play

April 8, 2017 By Annette1 6 Comments

It’s been a pretty good week with some up and downs…. but when I reflect back.. mostly up!   AND THAT is a very good thing.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday:
Started out like a typical day though everyone was act
ing tired and math was a frustration, and then English grammar was a frustration and… well let’s just say that we tossed English out the window and planned things out a bit differently to make the rest of the day a success.    We ran out to Gramma’s where the lad finished his schooling and then indulged his latest love.. CACTI!!!

Check out what he picked up with Gramma:

If you see that little red nub on the side of the cactus…he’s already trying to graft it on to another cactus.  He’s been reading, researching and sussing out all the things he wants to try with his cacti and apparently next week we are going to go cacti hunting in Kitchener.  ๐Ÿ™‚

I have to admit… I love hearing his enthusiasm for his cacti… it gives one a break from minecraft and pokemon talk I must say.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Tuesday:
A stay at home day… we had plans to go out Wednesday to a play so stayed home to get some work done at home.   One of the things we worked on was our Art Achieve Lesson.  We are working on making a totem pole.   You’ll have to wait for the review though… coming up in a couple of weeks.

The lad also worked on his Digital Savvy course (also a review coming up).

OH!!!   And we made a brain!  I know that sounds weird, but the lad and I have been learning about the central nervous system and I thought it would be good to make a plasticine model of the brain and then we’d label it another day.

I can’t say today was the easiest day… I actually disappeared for a needed few hours in afternoon to take a break from the angst of the morning.  We did some good things together, but it took working through angst to get there.  ๐Ÿ™‚   I managed to power through three reviews though, had a couple of conversations with friends, and got my mind back in order again.   Good to do that eh?

Wednesday we did minimal schooling.. writing a story, working on math, Canada history and Veritas Press lessons… then off to London.   We went to see the Musical “Little Women”.  I enjoyed myself!

Thursday:
A good day today.   Working through schooling, having fun relaxing in the afternoon, and at night…the success of Bridge Busting night at Cadets!  The lad came in first for best looking bridge, and came in fourth of the boys for bridge weight holding.  His bridge held 150 lbs.

Friday:
We had co-op in the morning with lots of YAY!!   The children like the class I am teaching, and woot woot.. they love how Hubby is teaching gym.   AND I brought a bunch of books down with me and ended up selling some of it.  Would have loved to have sold more but hey.. a wee bit here and there .. it all works eh?  I’ll slowly winnow it down.

I came home completely tired so I napped off and on in the afternoon sitting in my comfy chair.  So here it is 1030 and I’m feeling tiredly awake.  ๐Ÿ™‚

Saturday:
I’m supposed to go to a rabbit club meeting but currently am feeling like I don’t wanna go.   We’ll see what happens in the morning.
