Spring Break – Cooking Fun!

This week my son has been in cooking class all week.
He’s been bringing home cookies and pie and just having a good deal of fun.

He’s made cookies with brown beans in it (what a delight surprising mom and dad with the knowledge).

Chicken dinner with potatoes and veggies.
A variety of dips and learning to spiralize veggies.
Desserts.
Maple bacon and pancakes.

He’s been simple delighted with everything that they have made and was so pleased they sent him home with a cookbook.

Now he has more ideas of things to cook!

Friday we started our six week co-op session for HOPE.
Hubby is teaching a gym class.   We had the children play Hotdog, Around the World, and Everybody’s It.  Hard to get pics of fast moving children.

 I am teaching a “Making Zentangles class”.   I will be using this book as a base of reference.  You can find my review of it here.

The Highlights of This Week

This week has gone by much too fast so this week I’m only going to talk about my highlights of the week .

1. My son cooking another meal.. a good one.    Then Hubby made Spaghetti and meatballs last night.   It’s so nice not having to think of what to make a couple of nights a week.
     Poutine and ribs.

2. Learning that I and the lad may be accompanying hubby to the states in May. We do some sightseeing, he does some pastoral learning.   So plans are in the works.  Biggest thing will be to find affordable place to stay (most likely Pinchot State Park) and then affordable things to do driving around the area.    Will be looking at the Hershey Chocolate factory and apparently there’s a driving tour of Gettysburg and such like.

3. Building Lego together because the Lego Fair is coming up (tonight in fact!)  and I can’t show you pictures until AFTER the fact… oh and making cookies!   Always good to make cookies you know?  🙂

4. Two litters of bunnies born.  Not as big of litters as I hoped, but alive so all is good.  One litter had two broken orange (though one might be a really like tort.   And the other had two torts.   Both were litters of holland lops.

I have a litter old enough to go to new homes, spunky kits these three.   The broken chestnut already has someone interested in her.

 Let’s see.. other highlights of the week… My sweetheart brought home a few more things from the church this week.  Slowly he’s getting his stuff out of the church.  It’s a hard process so this is a step forward.. 18 years of his life was invested in this church.

ACK!! Mom adjustment time!!

The other day my lad was complaining about his nose hurting, dad looked over and said “oh, pimple!”

And my heart just dropped.

TOTALLY unexpected.  My goal is to raise a God-fearing young man, who knows how to work and have fun, who WANTS to leave home and make his own way in the world.

BUT ACK!!!   A pimple…just totally threw me off and made me want my little boy again.     The boys laughed at me they did.   Mockery is a good way to ground a person again isn’t it?  🙂

Anywho.. moving on to our week.

Monday was a lazy day.  Honestly.  I was still on “I was away all weekend doing nothing and want that to continue” mode.   The lad did his basics and then we left for London.  He camped out at gramma’s for the afternoon while Jim and I schleped about town.

I had a whack of books for sale in the trunk and met their new owners later in the afternoon.  I simply LOVE selling books and stuff.  Meeting new people and doing small talk… It’s a wonderful thing.  (yes, I know.. I’m weird).

Tuesday we headed off to the Science Centre in Toronto.  We took in the new exhibit and an IMAX movie called “think big”.  We wandered a bit more of the museum but then hunger struck.  We had a bit of a shorter day in the end, but it was still a good day.

Wednesday was the Food Bank and schooling, Thursday and Friday schooling again.   Friday I made a bunch of Tuna Recipes (you’ll see them later on the blog). The lad has been sewing a new pokemon figure and on Thursday asked me to show him how to use the sewing machine.   So today he’s been sewing up a storm and having a hoot!    It is wonderful to see that passion and excitement.

Tomorrow hubby is off to a Denominational Meeting.  He’s supposed to be there for 8 a.m. but he’s considering going late.  After all…. without having a pastorate it’s not like they can get mad at him or anything?   Give him a chance to get a touch more sleep eh?  Some freedom eh?

The lad is really really interested in what people think of his latest research project.  He’d be delighted if folks would comment on it.  The Lad’s Research: First Native Hunting Methods.

And it was good! Our week Feb 19-25

We planned a bit of a short week this week.   Plans to go away this weekend, a vehicle in need of repair, and knowing the learning takes place in many different ways.  🙂  School happened!   Life happened.  And it was good!  🙂

Monday 
Today was family day, so the lad did his minimal schooling that he does on days off, and off we went to first take part in a demonstration Karate Class and then to go for a walk at the Pinery.   We did some pokemon going while we are there, toured through Grand Bend and just hung out together.

Tuesday 
Ice experiment…ooh.. fun with matches!

The lad made cake!
It was his turn to cook, he saw the cake in the cupboard and his eyes…. oh my, they just lit up!   “It’s my turn to cook!    Let’s have cake!”

He was a bit downcast when I mentioned that just cake for supper was not acceptable… which led him to ask for helped in making perogies.

Dad, not being a lover of perogies opted to make himself some other dish instead.

Wednesday 
Food bank.   Regular schooling.  The lad pushed hard and was done by 1230.  🙂  
Had a lovely walk together in the afternoon the lad and I did.   New Pokemon out and running around, so we had to chase them down.  🙂

Thursday 
School, the lad’s report this week on the Caribou.
Garbage day, lovely weather, car work to do… we called it done as early as we could. 🙂

The lad helped clean the cars out and helped dad work on the rear brakes.   They also fixed the side mirror that I accidentally broke off after over correcting from someone taking a corner really wide.   (I avoided being hit but the car mirror…not so much).

Friday 
Gramma coming over since hubby and I are heading out for the weekend.   
The lad did practical schooling today making cheese buns.  🙂  He’ll also be doing animal husbandry and housework with gramma this weekend.   

Saturday-Sunday
Hubby and I just schleped around together.    We had a wonderfully relaxing weekend doing absolutely nothing but wandering around together, looking and talking and just being alone without distraction.

Oddly Run Week

This week has felt very odd to me.  Nothing seemed  to go the way I wanted it to all because we did things differently this week due my body not being happy with me.  

I’ve felt frustrated too often this week.
BUT TODAY.. ah..glorious sunshine and .. it was JUST GOOD.  🙂   And that is indeed a marvellous thing.  🙂

Monday
I KNOW I KNOW.. you are expecting me to say.. off to gramma’s today only… we didn’t.  That nasty bug that ran through my system over the past couple of weeks…. decided that it was Going to FIGHT ME HARD on leaving my system once and for all.. so we didn’t go to London.  Thoughts were.. we’d go on Tuesday.
The lad worked hard on his schooling, getting done by 130.  We played Settlers of Catan with me wrapped up in a cuddle blanket…. I still managed to win though.  🙂

Finished up a human body experiment.   Turned out way better than I thought it would…but in honesty was rather gross to deal with.  The lad wouldn’t touch it so I helped him out.

Tuesday.
The bathroom remained my friend today.  No trip to London.
The lad was learning about exponents today in Math.   Doing well but occasionally getting confused.
Played Settlers of Catan again.  Hubby won today.
I took pictures of almost all the for sale stuff today and will be busy putting them up on the for sale site for London homeschoolers.

Wednesday.
BUSY BUSY BUSY at the foodbank with a cup of hot chocolate at a friends afterwards.  The lad played with her cat, taught it to do a high five. 
Surprised the lad when we got home and said “you’re done for the day”.  Thing is…he worked hard at the foodbank, was good spirited and helpful.  That’s worth something in my book.   He whooped and promptly gathered up some boxes and made a cat playhouse.   (little did he know that he was still learning!).   🙂

We played Saboteur today.   Lad had karate.

Thursday:
This morning we managed to do some schooling.
Since we didn’t go to London on Monday, we decided to head off there today.   We had fun pokemon going in Victoria Park… what fun we caught some new pokemon.  

I dropped a bunny and some books off in London for sale.   It is SO Good to sell some of our old schooling books and some review books.  SUCH a good thing.  Helps our pocketbook too you know?  🙂

We headed home in time for supper and for the lad to go to Cadets.

Friday: 

We had plans to make a cloud, but that ended up not happening.  The lad has been totally into doing his research on the CN Tower.  We’ve been learning so much about this Canadian Icon.   You can find his report here. 

We also worked on one of our STEM projects…today the lad had a satisfaction… a robotic hand that worked!

Saturday:
I rushed around this morning putting together another book order for a lady to pick up.   Then we headed out for the Health Fair in Lucan.  WOOT WOOT the lady who makes the skin cream my lad uses for his occasional eczema was there so we were able to buy a big tub of it.    We had thought we’d need to go to London to sell some books but some young children needed a nap so that didn’t happen.  Perhaps Monday.  🙂

Independence at Work

 This has over all been a pretty good week for us schooling.  It had it’s ups and down with health issues and hubby needed to work through a disappointment.   We had a funeral at the end of the week for a dearly loved member of our former church.   With a new schedule made for his schooling it has furthered the lad’s independence. 
 
Monday
Introduced chore chart and new schedule.
Started learning about Saturn and how it is the only planet that would float, it is gaseous, has storms, Galileo thought the rings looked like handles because of the poor quality of his telescope.
Weekly visit to Gramma
Hubby and I had a lovely walk on this warmish winter day in the park…we caught some pokemon and just enjoyed the quiet of the park together.
I sold a rabbit who didn’t seem to be able to have babies, she’s gone to the kind of home I wanted for her.  A rabbit experienced home.  Their first rabbit is dying and they wanted to have a new bun to love on when their first passed away.  BrightSparrow should be a good girlie for them.

Tuesday
Big job today!   The lad is going to cook his first meal for the family!!!

POUTINE!!!  The lad wants to try poutine for the first time ever and it’s an easy meal for a lad to make so off we went.  We bought the poutine gravy, fries and cheese curds.

Wednesday
Foodbank this morning.
The lad wrote his first ever research paper… did it on the blog, also learned how to embed video, copy and paste from a website and is learning about citing sources.   Writing in his own words yet…that is still to come…though he’s starting.  🙂
Started our human body experiment.  Have to admit, I don’t have high hopes for this working well….

Played Sabateur as a family.

Thursday
Oh.. what did we do today?   I finished  cleaning up the book room.
The lad did his normal schooling… got done 20 minutes early.
The lad wrote a letter for his Waodani assignment today. He was supposed to write for 15 minutes but liked his assignment so much he kept going til it was done.  This is a review product from Home School Adventure Co., you’ll need to stay tuned for a review.
Worked on making his helmet better for his Knight’s outfit.

Started to learn how to play the “game of life”.

We’ve been learning about Canada’s woodlands and seaways this week, today it was the St. Lawrence Seaway.   Did you know it would take 8 days of sailing to cover it all?

Friday
Funeral today with a luncheon.
I had planned to do a Rocket Experiment and testing his improvement of his story grammar, but that didn’t happen.  He did do his veritas history and bible and got his reading done.
 
Saturday
Karate and board games along with a movie day.   Just a nice day together.

Where the lad learns early start, early end.

Monday:
Basics done quickly, wants to do no school at Gramma’s other than playing a game and reading.

Tuesday:
Schooling done: but I’m sick so stayed out of the way.    He did everything on his list easily and quickly.  He’s learned starting earlier means he is done earlier.  New sword was made.

Wednesday:
On fire with life today, schooling done quickly.   No Foodbank since I was still sick.
Sword broken in stupid accident.  New components purchased.  My fault the accident happened so headachy and icky feeling out we went to get needed supplies.    The lad worked on his iceberg experiment.   This is a redo of the experiment we tried last week but there were too many variables that were problematic.  The lad took the initiative to reconfigure it to be more accurate.  This allowed me to introduce writing a lab report in practice.  Been talking about it, now doing it.  He dictated this one to me.

Thursday:

On fire: schooling done quickly.
Introduced: reading about Canadians.  Picking one from three books I have, reading it and then telling me about it.   He was supposed to read one chapter but forgot the other day so read two today.   He narrated about Norman Bethune and Madeleine de Vercheres.

We had a pleasant surprise of learning more from an ART video about the human skeleton than from some of the medical ones we tried.

Friday:

I woke up feeling hollow and rather late…the lad was doing well with his schooling and was almost done. I asked him what his plans were for when he finished his schooling… he said “build a new sword mom”. I said okay… build a sword! I got a Huge THANK YOU and a hug and off he went.

Fridays is our do it different day… we do almost everything differently except for bible and history. We normally do art, some type of STEM project and a fun word knowledge book. The work he does building a sword easily qualifies as a STEM project so it was easy to let him go. 

Saturday:

The lad had “cadet-o-rama” today so was gone most of the day. Hubby and I went out for breakfast and then since he’s still not feeling well from the bug that soared through our house this week we went home and chilled.

I got a HUGE number of blog posts up and scheduled. We chatted and watched movies and just had a lovely quiet day. I also got the young bunnies photographed and my website updated. A good productive day.
